I disagree. Like astro said, at least give the option, or start people off with a required one programming course. Do you realize how many programming jobs there are right now? I got offered an internship out of high school, and some of my friends got actual jobs in it:S. Out of HIGH SCHOOL. No college degree. When people are desperate enough to hire high school students, something needs to be done in the education system.
I said it should be an option. It just shouldn't be pushed like it is. Every kid wants to be a programmer.
Everyone wants to be a programmer because Hollywood romanticises it. I remember all the kids wanting to be a programmer when a tele-movie about Julian Assange came out. The fact that he hacked the Pentagon at 15 while on a dial-up connection was inspiring to young Australians.
I agree with what you said earlier about the foreign languages. A lack of understanding of English can make it impossible to learn other languages, therefore that should be prioritised. There are a lot of international jobs that require multilingual people, though very few STEM related jobs in Australia. I know three computer science graduates who can't find steady work in their field. Yet schools and the Government continue to pretend that there is. Australia is 30 years behind the rest of the world. Teaching kids programming is Government way of pretending that we are and can keep up with the rest of the world.
In the globalised economy, international relations seems to be the future. Australia is currently demanding social science graduates.

Welcome to Coders Corner! This is a topic where fellow programmers can talk about programming, what programs they are working on, and help each other out! Just post a profile with the languages you know and how long you have been programming. Here's my profile: Name: Diglett809 Languages: C++, Java, Python, Visual Basic Years of Experience: 3
