(For those of you who remember my Silent series from the old MBs, this is basically a continuation of that.)
All I remember is that trees were falling and there we're explosions, and then this excruciating pain in my neck, some blurry faces, and then I was in a soft bed of snow, something soft and papery surrounding my neck area as I tried to speak, and then I was in a hard cott, looking as if I had just awoken from a nightmare.
"Wake up."
My eyes fluttered open and I sat up. My neck felt stiff and numb, as if from lack of use, and I found it hard to breathe properly, even though my chest was moving smoothly.
"Uh...mm..." Every sound was gravelly and broken, and my neck felt like sandpaper with every movement of my vocal cords. "Ahhh...nnngh..."
"Don't try to speak." The voice that had woken me up sounded again.
"W...ah...nn..." I felt like my throat was being stuck with pins.
"Hanna Julien." The voice was concerned this time.
I gasped, my breath shuddering from the pain it took me to inhale. I wanted to hold my breath now, if only it meant no more pain.
"Age 20."
I wanted to ask him how he knew this, but even breathing was like a knife to my throat and I knew how my voice sounded now.
"Built by Dr. Steven Julien."
My hands shakily rose to touch my neck. I winced, biting my tongue. The pain was unbearable.
"Sister by parenthood to Zane Julien."
I could barely remember, so what was the point of recalling?
"Wields the elements of ice, snow and wind."
Wind was what I didn't have at the moment. It was probably better to be dead at this point.
"Well, Miss Julien, we tried our best, but your voice chip faced a strange damage known as 'freezeburning,' as the extreme cold combined with your system overheating and the damage you took during the fall." The man came into the light; tall and muscular, with salt-and-pepper hair and dark eyes. "You also suffered from crippling hypothermia."
I closed my eyes and held my breath, ready to be taken apart or injected with even worse substance as an attempt at a "cure."
"We'll need to remove the chip in order for you to continue living, as the damage may spread to the rest of your body."
My cheek burned as a single, scalding hot tear made its way across my face, and I felt something sharp thrust itself into the skin of my arm, my already closed eyes feeling heavy and impossible to open.
I was in a dark yet tranquil forest, laying quietly on the branch of a tree, listening to a soft song carrying along the pines. The song unexpectedly turned into horrid screaming and all of a sudden, a leaf was on fire. Before I could put it out, the flames spread from leaf to leaf, onto the wood, and soon both the trunk and myself were engulfed in flames. I woke up before I could burn to death.
When I came back to full consciousness, breathing was a little easier, but my throat felt stuffy. They had removed the papery bandages and replaced them with softer ones, but most of my body was numb. My hands we're also quite close to my face, almost touching but not really.
"Good morning, Miss Julien. We have successfully completed the operation and you can leave the facility." The tall man from before walked into the room as soon as I was fully conscious. "If you can walk, that is," he added.
And then my bed felt hard and cold.
Something about this man made me hate him immediately. I guess it was his cavalier attitude and the way he talked that suggested he couldn't be trusted. He could betray me immediately and try to take me apart for an experiment, that was how suspicious he looked. He made me want to leave.
Immediately.
As soon as possible.
I scooted silently to the edge of the bed and struggled to my feet, swaying a little, stumbling a bit. Soon enough, my legs were finally cooperating with my brain and I sprinted across the hall, tears of anger streaming down my face, yet I felt a little lighter knowing I wouldn't have to see that man again.
As my feet carried me swiftly along hallways and corridors, down stairs and through doors, my long hair flying wildly behind me as I yanked out the tie that was keeping it in a braided bun, my hospital gown rippling with the energy it took to run this fast.
My hospital gown...?
...I needed new clothes.
Shoving open the glass doors of the "hospital," I was finally calm enough to walk when my feet touched the sidewalk surrounding the wretched building. Picking up a suitcase that must have been mine lying helplessly on the pavement, I continued on my way to a car whose license plate read a shortened version of my name: HJULIEN.
Quickly thinking, I climbed into the front seat and tried to remember how to drive. Placing my hands on the steering wheel started to feel less familiar, and...
They've taken my memory, I thought suddenly. They've taken all that I have. I pressed the gas pedal, expecting to crash into the concrete parking block. They've taken all that I am.
Pulling the lever to reverse, I continued angrily pondering the place. They've taken my family! They've taken my friends! They've taken...
...Jay.
That one name rose up in the blank void of my mind as warm, salty water surfaced on the brims of my eyes. I hastily put the machine on brake before I could leave the parking lot and my head landed heavily on the steering wheel with a small thud.
If only I still had my voice, I could call out to him!
Trying to ignore my tears, I pulled out of driveway and slammed my foot on the acceleration pedal, nearly ignoring the speed limit.
I want to go home. I have to go home!
Tears took over again and the car turned into a pole, the window cracking on contact.
I'm not going to give up! I WON'T GIVE UP!
Screaming silently, I made a U-turn into a street curve and quickly turned around in time to get back on the road as I gained control again, breathing heavily. My eyes still flooded with tears, I drove about half a mile before turning into a parking lot for an outdoor mall. Still going too fast, I crashed into another parking stop and the bumper hit the floor with a loud thud.
I have to get out of my car!
As the vehicle fell on its side, I reached for the top door, rescued my suitcase just as it came open, and dragged myself out of the automobile, unaware of the items toppling out of the suitcase until they caught my eye.
In a panic, I lunged into the car again and pulled out everything that had fallen in, stuffing it hectically into the case and closing it tight. But something occurred to me...
...How am I going to explain this if I can't speak?
I sighed in defeat as I pushed open the door to my team base, hanging my head in shame. Immediately, a young man threw himself onto my body, grabbing tight to me. "Hanna! I thought I'd lost you! You were...you were gone so long!" His voice was more or less a storm, quick and energetic like bolts of lightning, or like the sound of rain on a window sill. This must be Jay...
I didn't know how to respond, but no matter. I couldn't get a word out, more or less a single sound. I simply nodded.
"Hey. Why isn't she talking? Has she gone all shy on me again?" The boy let go. "Hanna?"
I glanced up at him, shaking my head. I barely remembered another gesture to convey my sorrow. But I studied him. He seemed kind of small in stature but, like lightning, he was skinny and speedy, his curly ginger mane partially concealing a cleft right eyebrow, which was probably his most remarkable feature. His face, pale but not too pale, was splattered with freckles, and his blue eyes were wide with worry.
"Do you...remember me?" More teenagers, most of them taller than Jay, made their presence clear in my blurred sight.
"Do you remember...us?" A calm, cool voice came from a strangely silver-colored one in the back, his icy blue eyes trained on me. "Can you speak?"
Finally coming to something I could answer, I shook my head. The teens around me gasped in fear.
"Do you think Krux and Acronix could have done something to her?" a female voice, flowing like water, chimed in. "Jay?"
"I don't know," he replied, staring in disbelief. "Zane?"
"Not Krux, nor is it Acronix." This "Zane," the titanium one, looked rather stoic as he spoke. "It was merely an accident during an excursion. She was carried to a hospital."
"An accident? For something this bad?" Jay glanced at Hanna. "How?"
"She fell a long height from ice, plunging into a freezing lake. Her memory switch became stuck and her voice module was diminished." Zane glanced at Hanna. "I am your brother. I was with you during the attack. My name is Zane, Master of Ice." He gestured to the ginger who was watching curiously. "This is Jayson Walker-Gordon, Master of Lightning." He then indicated a tall, muscular man in the back. "This is Cole Brookstone, Master of Earth." Getting up and standing beside the girl and a bed-headed male, he added, "Kai and Nya Smith. Masters of Fire and Water. Brother and sister, daughter and son of two blacksmiths. I am sure they can tell you the rest."
I understood, my memory slowly returning. And them something was missing. Another name in my head.
Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon.
I glanced up, waiting for someone else to arrive as more names flooded in, namely fellow Garmadons. Wu. Misako. And one whose name I never learned. And then another name. And another. My eyes growing wide, I suddenly pointed to a bright green door.
"Lloyd?" They glanced in my direction.
The door opened, but all was silent, until a boy of average height, with wavy blonde hair and the brightest emerald green eyes, emerged, a tiny smile on his face as he approached me, pulling me into a gentle hug.
(By the way, the old story had Hanna x Jay, but for the sake of Jaya, I will change the ship to either Hanna x Lloyd or Hanna x Cole. Hanna x Kai would also make an interesting unlikely pair. Vote in jammers of you want!)
I blinked slowly, beginning to recognize everyone and everything. My eyes were opened up, thanks to this encounter. Realizing I could still write, I grabbed a pen, slipping a note to Zane.
Big brother...
Zane gasped and hugged me. I sighed and patted his arm back. Jay glanced at us, confused but curious. "What is it?"
"She's remembering," Zane muttered. "She remembers us all now. Maybe seeing Lloyd did something."
"She was looking at Cole too, wasn't she?" Jay asked.
"Pretty sure I saw her staring at me too." Kai smiled at me and winked charmingly.
Jay began to panic, having gone through one love triangle before and knowing how much it sucked, ruining friendships. "A-anyways, shouldn't we...y'know...tell her everything she's missed or something?" I nodded, feeling a little stressed out as well. "Okay, so first off, Cole and I have stopped fighting."
"Nya is with Jay now, but she's the one looking after him for some reason," Kai added.
"Oh, and I found out I'm adopted. It explains the two last names, right?" Jay chimed in.
"I became a ghost for a while, and now I have this cool scar but it's taking some time to get used to having my body back," Cole added.
"Kai and I found our parents," Nya added.
"I became titanium." Zane glanced at his arms.
"We're running a tea shop," Lloyd added. "It was originally managed by Wu, but now we don't know where the heck he is, so we're doing it by ourselves."
I nodded quietly, hands folded patiently in my lap. Jay smiled at me a little. I smiled back a little less, sighing and staring at my lap. Pulling out another paper, I wrote, It's been so long. How did you manage?
"It sure has been a while, hasn't it?" Jay sighed. "Probably around three years or so."
I gasped.
"Don't worry, Hanna," Lloyd said, his voice, slightly deeper than before, soothing to my ears. "I'll catch you up to training in no time." He smiled compassionately. "Don't you want to discover your element or anything?"
I smiled softly and nodded, letting him lead me to the training room.
"Concentrate, Hanna." Lloyd's voice rang in my ears as I aimed at the training dummy Jay had built. "You won't get anything out if you don't focus."
Focus, Hanna. Focus! It was nearly impossible to, with all these restored memories plaguing my head. In my struggle to clear my head, the dummy suddenly froze into solid ice before my eyes. "Ice?"
Lloyd watched curiously as I kept going. Soon enough, I was bringing thick clouds into the vicinity, gusts of wind surrounding the two of us. "Wind!"
The clouds began spewing a blizzard at top speed, encircling us in a chilly winter storm. "Winter..."
Lloyd was in awe as I practiced. I was both fighting and harnessing my element, surprisingly strong in his eyes. "Amazing!"
"You're done for the day." I let out a breath of pure white air as the storm subsided, falling to my knees in exhaustion. "Tomorrow, it's Spinjitzu. Got it?" I nodded, breathless.
I collapsed onto the futon by the TV, Kai collapsing next to me. "You were amazing out there," he breathed. "No one like ya. Even me." He chuckled. "So...got any plans this afternoon? We were all gonna see a movie."
I thought briefly, then nodded. It would be a good opportunity to get to know the people I reunited with.
"So it's a date?" I stared at him, but he winked. "Kidding! See ya there. Rest, got it? Ya look tired."
I nodded vaguely, soon drifting off into a deep, well-deserved sleep.
---
Jay was fearful as red, green and black clashed. Since Kai and Lloyd's interactions with Hanna, Cole was jealous - VERY jealous - and had decided to, er..."lecture" his friends. This was how far it went.
"She was obviously looking at ME!" Cole yelled, grabbing Lloyd by his collar. "You wouldn't be noticed anyways!"
"Cole, stop! She may have looked at you, but it was obvious she took some memories from me!" Lloyd really didn't want to fight, but Cole was persistent. "And when we were training together, I just felt this...connection, you know?"
"I felt a stronger one!" Kai yelled back, as his younger sister exchanged uncomfortable glances with Jay. "When she looked at me, it was like a breath of life!"
Jay groaned, covering his ears as Nya comforted him. Why did it have to end up like this? He thought his fellow ninja could get along for once! Think positive, Jay. Think positive! Starfarer! Video games! Outer space! Cotton candy! Nya!
(That...may or may not have been a LEGO Movie reference at the end. XD)
I fought to hold back a panic as three of my fellow ninja were torn apart. After Cole and I repaired our friendship, I didn't want anything else to happen to my friends. But it did, and I couldn't stop it, no matter how hard I tried.
Until I got an idea.
Standing up, I said, "Why don't we train for a while? I mean, the movie doesn't start for a few hours! We've still got time! Heh...besides, I've got, uh...I've improved my training bots! Provides more of a challenge, eh?"
"Sparring match?" Cole smirked as he turned to Kai.
"Sparring match." Kai grinned back.
"Darn it!" I ran after them, just before they got to the door. "I mean, can't we settle this problem with chess or something? You know, where you don't, like...kill each other?"
Kai groaned, and Cole remarked, "You tried to kill me, Jay, when I tried to get closer to Nya!"
"Yeah, but I've changed since then! It's been a couple years!" I placed a hand on Cole. "We're best friends. I'm not that type anymore. And I'm not letting this ruin your friendship!"
"Right, Jay." Cole sighed. "Power of positive thinking and all that whatnot." He mimicked me in saying this, pitching his voice up and talking faster and louder.
""Yeah, but can't you be a little optimistic for once? Lighten up! She was clearly looking at Lloyd!" I immediately regretted blurting that out. "Whoops, heheh... shouldn't have said that..." I backed up.
Cole darted at me and pinned me straight to the wall. "Are you saying you're on his side, sparky?"
Gosh darn my social anxiety for not giving me something good to say! "Uh...I just...saw her eyes?"
"ARE YOU SAYING YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH HER TOO?" Cole yelled. Ouch. Curse my sensitive ears!
"No, I was just saying I saw her eyes, and they seemed to be looking at Lloyd! I'm not on anyone's side!" I slowly, awkwardly put my hands up. "Gosh, these situations are always the hardest," I muttered.
Cole dropped me as I coughed hard. "Y-you're strong, you know that? I'm so glad you weren't using your super strong earth hands..."
"I could!" Cole thrusted his fists at me, but stopped. "I won't. Won't want ya losing your voice again." He chuckled.
"Yeah," I rasped, struggling to my feet. "You've done that a lot lately."
I woke up feeling weighed down, as if my head was too heavy for my body. Clutching it, I tried to regain consciousness and awareness. And then I heard it. The yelling and clashing of blades that drove me closer.
Upon opening the door, I discovered the source of such sounds. Cole and Kai were fighting, sword to scythe, almost as if for love, while Jay and my elder brother tried to hold them back, doing less than excellent, due to Kai's stubbornness and Cole's brute strength. Nya was there, and so was Lloyd, whom I smiled softly at. He smiled back.
"Oh, look at that! She's smiling at me!" Kai winked at me, doing nothing but slightly aggravating me.
"No, she was obviously smiling at me!" Cole grinned at me, letting a wink decorate his handsome features.
"Well, you know what makes this really hard?" Jay responded, continually trying to pry Cole's big fists away from Kai's irritatingly handsome face. "She can't speak! Don't you guys remember? She won't tell you who it is! So you might as well stop fighting! It won't be fair!"
"Well, whoever comes out looking unrecognizable loses," Cole replied, making a fist that glowed a brilliant orange. "I'm betting that stupid battle-scarred face will come out black and blue by the time I-"
"NOOO!" Jay yelled. "She's already got someone who her heart is set on! Fighting for it won't-"
"Shut it, bolt-brain," Cole muttered as he tried to push Kai over and pin him to the ground. But Kai wouldn't allow it.
"Well, you'll be saying goodbye to those dark, handsome features once I get my fi-"
"NO!" Jay grabbed Nya and pulled her over to put out the flame forming in Kai's tight fist. "This is too far! Not even Cole and I would burn each other's faces off!"
"I would burn that pretty-boy mug of yours if I had fire powers," Cole replied with a smirk.
Jay groaned, finally succeeding in pulling Cole away. And I got an idea. Glaring coldly at Cole and Kai, then smiling at Lloyd again, I finally made my decision known.
I took the seat next to Hanna on the steps, Lloyd on the other side of her. "Uh...so, for a mute girl, you can sure communicate, eh?" I chuckled. She seemed to laugh a little, but her happiness was brief. She walked inside the next second, me catching up to her. "Wait! Are you okay? What's wrong?"
Kai and Cole, despite the fight being done, were now heatedly arguing over...who knows what? Hanna sighed, indicating them. Zane was actively trying to break up the fight, but it wasn't working. I gasped and attempted to get there attention.
I'm guessing "Could you two please stop fighting?" wasn't the right choice of words, because at that second, they came after me.
"AAAAAHHHH! OKAY, I'M NOT HOLDING IN THESE FEELINGS ANYMORE!" I screamed, shielding myself with a pillow as they chased me around. "WHAT AM I DOING!?"
Lloyd gasped and jumped in front of me with a katana from one of the shelves. "Will you two quit it?"
I grimaced, the proximity between me and the blade a bit close for my liking. "Um...thanks!" I shuffled out of the way. "Now...I really... don't want to mess with them..." I shifted my gaze in a few directions, before it finally landed on the floor before me and just rested there.
"Kai. Cole." Lloyd placed one hand on each boy. "You're friends, correct?"
"Not at the moment," Cole replied, eyeing Kai grudgingly.
"We would be, if he wasn't a no-good-" Kai began, before Lloyd covered his mouth.
"Say no more. The fight is over and it shouldn't continue. Go to your rooms." Lloyd pointed in two directions and flashed me a small smile. I watched curiously as he disciplined them.
"Hey! You can't do that to us!" Kai shouted.
"Yeah! You're not our sensei!" Cole replied. "Oh, wait..."
They both sighed. "Yes, sensei."
As soon as they disappeared, I gasped audibly. "How did you do that? You're like my mom! It's amazing!"
Lloyd chuckled. "You learn a few things from having a dad and uncle like mine."
I smiled a little too. "Maybe that's why I'm so good at making and fixing things! My parents are inventors! Ooh, are you good in archaeology?"
"Never change, Jay," Lloyd said softly, before replying, "I haven't really tried yet."
"Well, surely she could teach you!" I replied. "Mom taught me how to cook and Dad taught me how to use tools, so you should be able to learn from your mom!"
Lloyd smiled at me. "I think I'm learning from everyone, Jay. Even you. For example, you taught me how to find the light in a dark time. Zane taught me that even if you have quirks, you can make a difference. Cole taught me to find my inner strength. And Kai taught me how to harness my passion." He chuckled a little.
"What about Nya?" I replied. He'd known my girlfriend as long as any of us; surely there was a way she'd taught him as well.
"Oh, Nya? Wow. Well, that girl...that girl is fierce. But she taught me to try harder. That failure wasn't the end of the world." Lloyd smiled softly. "I think we should try anything we can to get them to be friends again?"
I saw this earlier and was going to comment, but then Christmas came out of nowhere and hit me in the face.
This is utterly fantastic!! Your writing is so vivid, and you add in some humor you don't usually find in fan fictions. The beginning was so dramatic I tensed up, the dynamics between the ninja are awesome, and I got a kick out of Cole and Kai fighting with poor Lloyd caught in the middle. Plus, Jay made me laugh out loud. "AAAAAHHHH! OKAY, I'M NOT HOLDING IN THESE FEELINGS ANYMORE! -- WHAT AM I DOING!?" I'm interested to see Hanna's part to play in this, and how the ninja team will fare under the rising tension. This is so fun to read, and I'm really looking forward to seeing more!
Oh, and as for your question on who Hanna ought to be shipped with. . .
