I went back to play my childhood favourite Sonic game, Sonic Colours!
It’s not as good as I remember...
Just some strange design decisions, (Such as the unnecessary double jump, boost meter and drif modes), and weird level design. I wish they put more focus on the colour powers, maybe reduce the number of levels in favour of longer levels and tried to make each level memorable and diffrent from the last. Also, the bosses are terrible, the first one is over far to quickly!
Though no matter what, the opening cutscene is still one of my favourite throughout all video games I’ve ever played!
Anyone else have an opinion?
It was definitely better than Generations or Forces, and, I'd venture, Unleashed.
What I miss in Sonic games though are the proper 3D sections that took skill to navigate, and I don't think we've had that since Sonic 06.... and more recently Lost World (though that game is sadly a footnote in Sonic's history it seems) yes I'm bringing up Sonic 06-
If you think about it, as rushed and unfinished as it was, Sonic 06 had some startingly good level design and fun gameplay.
In fact, purely from the perspective of what the game was clearly intended to be: I would be bold enough to suggest that Sonic 06 was spiritually the best Sonic game. I miss the feeling of turning the control stick and making Sonic go in that direction as opposed to steering him along narrow, mostly straight roads. And while it had extra characters, they didn't overshadow Sonic's (or Shadow's) core gameplay like they did in SA2 and SA1, which I understand are the major detracting elements of what are otherwise highly revered or indeed the most revered games in the franchise (aside from the classics).
Above all, I miss the days when there was a genuine difference between sonic being a ball... and not being a ball. His centric ability and indeed, the logic of why he's a hedgehog in the first place, is that he's vulnerable when he's not balled up, and mostly invulnerable to anything but spikes when he is balled up. This has completely gone away with the advent of the boost, where he can barrel through laughably large enemies without really thinking.
The boost mechanic is a fun power fantasy for sure... but it's just that: a power fantasy. It makes the player strong to the point that that only thing they need to worry about is jumping, steering, and avoiding hazards... assuming any of those things are actually present, which they're oftentimes not.

Yeah, I also think 06 is more than just glitchy and has a bad human princess character.
I feel like boost has it’s place. In rush, to spice up the gameplay, doing tricks could increase your boost meter, if you can manage proper routing and tricking, you could probably be boosting for the entire level! (Which is a good thing in this case.) Boost is good when it feels like a reward for your skillful movement and attacking but not when they just give you a row of white wisp capsules and say “Here is where you boost!”.
What are your hopes and/or predictions for the next sonic game?

What next Sonic game?
Honestly what would most realistically happen is Sega will, if they do anything at all, probably try to keep making games that are similar to Sonic Mania. They may scrap 3D completely since Forces was so badly received.
As far as hopes, what would ideally happen is they grow some... courage! and formally announced either Sonic Adventure 3, or any sort of game with the same feel as the Sonic Adventure games. (Ideally some mix of the relative stability of SA2 with the positive elements of 06.) But I'm not holding my breath.
A close second would be if they hopped on the same bandwagon that Activision set up and formally remaster SA1 and 2 in the same manner that Activision remastered the original Crash and Spyro trilogies. I know there are HD ports but I'm talking more like, an actual graphical overhaul and possibly even an engine rebuild, assuming the Spyro and Crash remakes use new game engines.
As a side note, if SA2 were to be remade in this manner, a personal desire would be MANY more Shadow levels. For SA2 being his debut game, Shadow only has FOUR stages.

Just what sonic game that would be made next!
A new 2d would be cool. Howabout it having a handrawn artstyle? Maybe bring in several under-utilised characters and give them a playable role?
I’m not sure they would make a game called SA3, since there are so many older games that could be seen as SA3. But a return to style would be great! Though I have the same mind with 3D sonic I am with Paper mario, they don’t necessarily need to go back to thier roots to be a good game, they just need to refine their new gameplay and write a lovely story!
I would love for them to make a full remake of SA1! I think they should leaves Sonic’s campaign close to the original with minimal upgrades overall, but improve the other characters, especially Big! And why not add a new campaign? A playable Tikal would be so awesome!
Though, if they remove Sonic saying “Come on ya big drip!” I will be very upset!

That was a joke about how maybe there won't be a next one
Hand-drawn artstyle could be pretty cool... but oh wait then SEGA would be 'guilty of ripping off Cuphead' or 'Paper Mario' or something -- joking aside, one thing I definitely miss in platforming Sonic games is multiple playable characters. DECENT SHADOW GAMEPLAY AND STORY WHEN
I can certainly see your point, though in my opinion the adventure formula just lends itself more easily to that feeling of control and navigation that feels missing in Sonic games. I dunno.
Funnily enough -- the mach-speed sections are kind of like a modern boost segment... except with horrible controls and no invincibility to speak of it'd honestly be interesting to see a Sonic game with 'boost sections' and regular adventure-style 3D platforming like from the old days. I legit wouldn't even mind a gravity stage
Oh SA1's an absolute goldmine of campy, cringey, in-engine cutscene glory, and it would honestly be worth it if they only made minimal changes to the dialogue and directed the cast to say their lines just as they were said in the original game.
I also almost want Sonic's interruption of Shadow from SA2 to be canon now.

Oh, there will ALWAYS be a next one!
I was talking about a style similar to Tyson Hesse.
Perhaps there is just a new style that is even better than adventure that just hasn’t been made yet! But it would really be simpler to just go back to it’s roots.
Or, they could design level segments with the intention that the player goes super fast, maybe having a load of new dash panels?
I would really love to see all the moddern VAs replacing all the old ones, if only just to see an exact comparison to the originals.

You mean it isn’t?
We can certainly hope
I was making a joke about how when Sonic tries something it always gets compared to another existing product, especially a Mario one. e.g. Lost World being overly compared to Galaxy.
...You mean the Lost World Style? okay I'm actually kind of not joking that was a criminally underrated game
That's kind of what I was thinking too, though Shadow needs a VA closer to his original pretty soon, the current one is just a biiiit too sinister in my very personal opinion.
I mean, strictly speaking, since the interruption arose from botched dubbing, and the interruption doesn't exist in the game's original Japanese translation, it's safe to say that Sonic did not canonically interrupt Shadow. Also, if I remember correctly, they sooort of fixed the cutscene in the HD edition.
I went back to play my childhood favourite Sonic game, Sonic Colours!

I like Colors from what I've played, but I don't like that you have to use A to jump and B to boost when playing on the Wii pro controller, did they forget the Y button exists or something?
