As they face off, Zariana instructs Azril in the techniques he can use in this circumstance. He has little success with them, but he does manage to disarm Maicyn a couple times. Then Maicyn takes her turn unarmed, with a considerably better outcome. Azril is easily able to stand his own against her with his advantage, but she appears to have some experience with this type of combat, and she is able to beat him once or twice. When they finish, Dernis comes to collect Azril and Maicyn takes her leave.

His training progresses at a fair pace and while the improvements are slight he can already notice his skills growing in this short time. He quickly advances under Obsȃr's tutelage as well, soon getting to know the other apprentices, most of whom are friendly even though a few seem a little jealous of his relatively rapid progression. For the moment, Dernis's lessons focus largely on the language of hand signs used by the Riders and Azril is able to pick up on most of the important applications by this time. Maicyn seems much more comfortable around him, but she remains reticent. He meets some of the veteran Riders in passing as they stop by between missions and he trains a few times with the other newer recruits. One afternoon, as he takes his leave of Maicyn and Zariana, heading with Dernis to begin their lessons, the eldest Jiwovz child asks him, "Do you feel ready to begin missions?"

"If you don't feel ready, you're not obligated. I am going to be leading a mission pretty soon, so my dad wanted me to ask you. It shouldn't be too difficult or anything, simply providing an escort for a few days."
