“AGH!” Veronica fell to the ground, a small wound on her shoulder. Samus wheeled around, realizing that he hadn’t been focusing on their camouflage. The Oshoku in the watchtower had opened fire. “Oh, no you don’t.” Samus reached out with his mind.
Suddenly, in the Oshoku watchtower, the weaponry turned on the soldiers, ending their existences swiftly. Within fifteen minutes, only echoes of the word “DEMONS” rang through the tower.
Samus grinned. “You underestimated my power.” “A little help?” Veronica said sarcastically. “Oh, right...” Samus healed the wound and they went on their way.
The next obstacle was the river. “Can’t you, like, part the waters or something?” Veronica asked. “I’m… trying...” Samus was really focusing. “I think there’s something in the water… something I can’t control.” Veronica frowned. “That shouldn’t be possible.” “Well, I guess there’s an element that didn’t come from nature…” Samus said. “A poison...” “Any other ideas?” “I can still fly, I think.”

“Why didn’t you think of that when we were crossing the mine field?” Veronica asked. “I don’t know, why didn’t you suggest it?” Samus asked. “Oh, shut up.” The two flew over the river and the canyon, and now had the wall to worry about. “I don’t think flying over is a good idea.” Samus said. “We’ll use Stone this time. Just open up a tunnel through the wall.” “Don’t screw up.” “She said needlessly.” “He said foolishly.” “Touche.” Samus felt the wall and concentrated. The centuries-old stone wall became like a liquid, and the two were able to pass right through. “I think I got some granite in my ear.” “Oh, for the love of...” Veronica stopped. “Samus, this isn’t the other side of the wall.” Samus looked around. They were in a small square room, made of stone. No windows, no doors. A small torch somehow burned brightly, illuminating an ancient writing desk, a vial of ink, and a statue of a young girl, lying against the wall. “We’re inside the wall, I guess...” Samus said. “But there’s oxygen without an apparent source.” Samus pointed at the torch. “This makes even less sense.” Veronica knelt beside the statue. Her eyes widened. “Samus, it… there’s… uh...” Samus knelt beside her. She was holding her shaking hand up to the stone girl’s lips. The statue was breathing. Samus sensed it right away. “It’s exhaling oxygen.” He said. “This is trippy.” He stood. “C’mon, let’s just go.”

On the other side of the wall, Samus and Veronica became the first people to ever see the Northern Lands. And this was not a good thing. While they didn’t expect anything spectacular, they didn’t expect this. Fields, charred, the very soil black with shadows and ash. Lakes of poisoned water, which resulted in horrific-looking storm clouds above, with heckish lightning and smoke-colored rain drops. A long convoy stretched across a stony road, from factories that undoubtedly produced fake produce to the really dangerous but also kinda cool laser gate that led into the city. In the distance, a massive obsidian fortress rose into the clouds. “So this is how the other half live.” Samus said grimly. Veronica frowned at him. “Seriously?” Samus shrugged. “Sorry, I can’t help it.” Despite herself, Veronica smiled. “The Todokinikui is somewhere in the Northern Lands.” Veronica pulled a book out of her satchel. “Where exactly is not specified, although there is a symbol we should look for.” She showed Samus the symbol in the book. “It looks like a turtle.” Samus said. “It kinda does, yeah.” Veronica closed the book. “Theoretically, back when there were trees and villages in which to hide the symbol, we would’ve had something to go on. But now that we’re here...” “Hey. We’ll find it.” Samus said. “We’ll get the inatium, and use it to save the people and free Aku from Lord Oni’s grasp. Sound good?” Veronica nodded. “Yeah. Let’s do it.”

Five months later
Veronica Io was dragged into the Oshoku camp by two soldiers. Her robes were torn and bedraggled, herself even more so. “C’mon, you—cough—cowards, let me outta these chains and we’ll see if it takes another five hundred men to--” She was interrupted by a sword hilt hitting her shoulder. One of the Oshoku grunted something in Akuian. “Okay, that stings.” A Oshoku camp from six months ago was quite an impressive site. Literally grown from the ground, naturally spiked walls of obsidian with large watchtowers at every corner, filled with armaments, vehicles, and Oshoku spawning vortexes. Each fortress was controlled by a commander Oshoku, which is larger and more powerful than a squad of Oshoku put together. Nowadays it’s a rarity to find one in such good condition, seeing as in the past five months, six whole bases have been totally obliterated, leaving a handful across the entire Northern Lands, not to mention moving fortresses and campsites. Veronica was tied to a large wooden pole in the middle of camp. “Well, this could’ve one better.” She mumbled.

“Commander Sugu, we have captured the female.” “Excellent. Then Go will not be far behind.” “I have a first name, you know.” Commander Sugu turned slowly, and spoke in a slightly mocking, only barely surprised tone. “Hello, there.” Samus Go dropped from nowhere and grinned. “Commander Sugu. My, you are a bold one, setting a trap like you did.” Sugu tilted his head to the side, examining Samus. “I see you’ve copied my beard.” ‘Twas true, though Sugu’s scaly face was decorated with black and prickly facial hair, Samus had grown a golden ‘tee and ‘stache. Samus raised an eyebrow. “New hammer?” Sugu hefted a large bronze handle, at the end of which was a massive boulder larger than Samus. “All the better to smash you into a stain with, Go.” “Who are you calling Go? I’m just a light projection.” The fake Samus phased into nothing. “Cool, huh?” Sugu, who had long sense gotten over the fate of his brother, Sutorai, had been tasked with destroying Samus Go. Samus had been on a quest of his own, searching out the library and destroying Oshoku fortresses in the meantime. Most recently, Veronica was ambushed and taken down by a good five hundred warriors. The pursuit lasted for nineteen hours, and the Oshoku suffered large losses. To think, all the while Veronica was armed with nothing but her wits and an old plastic fork...
