Samus scraped foam off onto the sidewalk as he trudged through the city. He took a shortcut through a dark alley, the kind that would make parents and studio executives nervous. "Darned foam got in my pants..." Samus muttered. aah! CRSH Samus looked around. What was that? SMSH BR-BR-BRRRrrrr... Something was nearby. Around the corner, in another alley. Samus looked around at the darkening walls, the sun was about to set. "Help!" A voice shouted from a distance. "Aah!!" Hold up. Samus recognized that voice. It belonged to his friend, Saisho, a young student who studied mythology. "Saisho?" Samus called out. "Don't worry kid, I'm coming!" Samus dashed through the alleyways as Saisho's panicked cries echoed through the labyrinth. "Help! Please, no!! "What are you!?" Samus was worried, needless to say. "AAAA--" Samus turned a corner, a surge of panic rushed through him as Saisho's screams were cut off. "NO!!" He wasn't sure of what he was witnessing. All he saw was a shadow, holding a young, unconscious form in a grimly suggestive fashion. "WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM!?" Samus shouted. The shadow tuned to face him. Nine feet tall, lots of spikes. Sturdy build, with piercing red eyes. The shadow dropped Saisho. It uttered something in ancient Akuian, it's voice like a lion gurgling curdled cheese. Samus looked back an forth between the form on the ground and the shadow above it. The anger melted from his face, replaced by fear. "No..." The shadow lunged forward, with foot-long claws so sharp they left slice marks in the very air. "AGH!" Samus rolled out of the way, stumbled to his feet, and began running. Faster and faster, adrenaline and fear urging him toward survival. His odds were slim, as the shadow seemed to be gliding through the ever-darkening alleys. Eyes widening, taking in every glance of sunlight, searching for some way to escape. Samus burst out of the alleyways and into the street, nearly getting hit by a hoverbus. Directly across the street was an old antique store, the closest thing to safety Samus could contemplate at the moment. Smashing through the door, shrouded by the darkness withing, smashing into a shelf, pain, the world going black...

Suddenly, all the pain was gone. Samus' entire body seemingly went through an upgrade, his arms and legs filled with adrenaline, his eyes seeing in the dark, his mind racing, piecing together reality around him.
The antique store was a dump. He ran into the dark, crashed into a cabinet, and a dagger fell into him from a display above. But the dagger was gone, as was the wound.
"What... the heck... was that...?" Samus looked around, and stood up. "I'm... taller...?" "Uh, no..." An even more bewildered Veronica pointed at his feet. "You're frazzing floating." "Oh. So I am." Samus kicked his feet. "Veronica. I think I'm going to scream now."
"Where are we going again?" Samus asked. "I can't tell you, too many ears, now SHUT UP!!" Veronica turned a street corner. "Fine, but I just..." Samus stopped. "What is this place?" "It's a park, doorknob." Veronica was looking around in bushes. "Found it. C'mon." Veronica disappeared into the bush. "The heck?" Samus looked around, then cautiously approached the bush. "Veroni--" A had reached out and pulled him in. "AAAA--" Falling, sliding, landing. "OOF!" "Get up." Veronica was already upright, reading a dusty old book. "What... is this place?" Samus asked. "It's called the Toshareta, an ancient library." "Wh--wha...?" Veronica looked Samus dead in the eyes. "Samus, do you know what an elemental is?"
"No, no, no, no, no." Samus said. "My parents were not demigods, or whatever. They were nobodies. Like me." "Maybe so. But the science is simple." Veronica held up a book. "I've been coming here since I found this place, when I was fifteen. The bush is in a blind spot in the Oshoku security feeds. These books, though ancient, hold the keys to human potential. "A long time ago, people were born with sparks inside them. Elemental sparks. Since these people were in tune with nature, they could use their spark to control an element. "But after Lord Oni took over, that connection was severed, and now the elemental sparks in everyone lies dormant. "Your parents were the results of years of sparks being handed down, without even knowing it. You wanna know how I know?" "Not really."

"So what're we gonna do with this information once we find it?" Samus asked, flipping the page of a hundred-year-old book. "We're going to use it to turn more sparks into flames." Veronica said. Samus looked up. "What?! Why? I thought we were going to help those elementeers?" "Elementals, you goof." Veronica climbed down a stepladder with an old volume. "And we need to build up a force of powerful heroes to combat the forces of Lord Oni." "HOOOOLD UP." Samus closed the book and stood. "We CAN'T fight Lord Oni! We SHOULDN'T fight Lord Oni! We have NO BEEF with that guy, WHATSOEVER." Veronica sighed. "Samus, tell me, why are there no more elementals?" "Because they were too stupid to live and became extinct? Maybe a meteor strike?" "No, you moron. Because their connections to nature was severed." Veronica said. "And any elementals that somehow exist nowadays? They've been hunted down and destroyed. Now, who covered the island in a city and eliminated all nature?" "Well, there's the park..." "The park is made of plastic, Samus. Now who?" "Lord Oni..." "And who wouldn't want super-powered beings existing in his kingdom, challenging his rule?" "... Lord Oni?" "Exactly." Veronica handed him a new book. "Now keep looking. We need something to fan those flames, so we can crack this conspiracy wide open." "I think I fell for the wrong girl..." "What?" "Nothing."
"Hey, what happened to that dagger in my chest again?" Samus asked. "It disappeared, why?" Veronica asked. "Did it 'transform into a vapor, one that healed the body and the soul'?" "Well, that's what it... Wait." Veronica came over to Samus, who was looking through a large old tome written in dark green ink. "What's that?" "This book talks about inatium, a very rare and powerful material discovered during an old war. It has magical properties, capable of totally creating a connection between a person's spark and the nature around them effectively activating their elemental powers. It can be forged into a dagger, but cannot kill humans." Samus looked up. "It can also be formed into a pill, which I think is a much better--" "What else does it say?"
"Not much, just a little history. Back during the war, elementals fought a powerful enemy. The enemy protected their mighty fortresses with magical spells, that alerted the inhabitants to the presence of an approaching elemental. So they took a sickly potion that would sever their connection to nature, turn them into regular people. They took the potion, sneaked inside, and stabbed themselves with daggers made of inatium. Powers came back, healed the wound, also gave them a temporary adrenaline boost." Samus looked up. "Huh. That explains why I stopped floating a couple hours ago." "Amazing. Does it say where we can find some?" "Uh..." Samus turned the page. "Somewhere called... the Todokinikui." Veronica's expression turned to that of a person who just realized all hope was lost because that specific place was impossible to reach. "If you don't mind me asking, why do you look like all hope is lost?" Samus asked. "Because that specific place is impossible to reach." Veronica said. "It's another library I read about. It's on the other side of the island." "Psh, that's not so impossible. We'll just take a hoverbus to the south side..." "Other way, Samus." "Oh..." Samus frowned. "The Northern Lands." The Northern Lands were mysterious and shrouded in secrecy. It is where Lord Oni lives, where the Oshoku come from, and where all the farmed produce and meat come from. It is also separated from the city by a large impenetrable wall, guarded twenty-four seven, armed to the teeth, preceded by an equally impossible-to-overcome obstacle: a moat. A big one. Not to mention, it seems to be covered by a huge scary storm cloud even on sunny days. "You know, no one has ever crossed the moat and lived." Samus said. "No one's crossed the wall, period." Veronica thought for a moment, then closed her eyes. "Then we'll be the first." "... Alright." "I'll start grabbing all the old maps and books we might need, you keep reading about inatium." "Reading about what now?" "Oh, for the love of..."
