Gidie shakes his head. "No, I belong here. If there is war coming, I must prepare for it. And, besides, who else can teach Old Magic?"
I see, you have a duty and a commitment. Will you tell me about how you learned Old Magic?
Gidie sighs. "Very well. A few years ago, there was a war in the Southern Kingdoms. The Lion Kingdom and Shadow Kingdom fought against the Dragon Kingdom, and in the end the Dragon Kingdom's army and castle were destroyed. Unfortunately, those weren't the only casualties of the war. My family lived on a farm not far from the castle. I was away at the time, but when I returned I discovered that all of them had been smashed in the battle. I was angry. I wanted revenge. But I didn't know how to go about it until I met a man named Enguerrand, the heir to the House of Bears. He said that he was going to reestablish the Stag Kingdom, and he would help me take my revenge on the other Southern Kingdoms. So he took me to the House of Bones and we went deep underneath, into a labyrinth, where we found an ancient library. Among its contents were several texts of Old Magic. With Enguerrand's help, I studied them, until I became proficient. And then we came here to begin his plans."

*listens attentively* *gasp* Your family, of course you wanted revenge! It is understandable, this man of bears was good to help you. Go on, what were the plans? *she queries eagerly*

Gidie wears a grim expression as he continues. "Lord Enguerrand had allied with a man from across the sea, General Boris. He was an advance scout for the Xain Empire, sent to prepare this continent for their invasion. The plan was to destroy the Southern Kingdoms so the Xains could take that land easily. In return, Lord Enguerrand would be allowed to rule over them under the Xain Empire. Soon, people from the Southern Kingdoms and the Forest Band began to investigate the old fortress that we were using as a base, so I created an illusory fog to hide us. Using the fog as cover, we captured a young woman named Alice, who was a captain of the Lion Knights. Then I cast a spell that summoned an invincible monster called the Tarasque. Alice was the anchor for the summoning; to destroy the Tarasque, one had to de-summon it or smash her. I set the Tarasque loose. Its mission was to destroy the Southern Kingdoms and their people."

*Fawn looks awed* That's big revenge.
Gidie nods sadly. "It would have been. I think it would have destroyed me, had I succeeded. If I had ever really paused to think about what I was doing, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself."

*Fawn is surprised and double takes* You didn't exact your revenge? Your family was not avenged?

Gidie shakes his head. "You saw people alive in the Southern Kingdoms, yes? If that plan had succeeded, there would have been no one. No one except the Xains, at least. Consider this: I never really needed revenge against the people of the Southern Kingdoms. Indeed, those who live there now are good people; they never did anything to hurt me. The target of my revenge should have been the concept of senseless war. And that revenge I think I did accomplish, in a way. If the Xains represented the concept of senseless war, then perhaps smashing thousands of them got me my revenge. But it also lost me my legs. That may be no more than I deserve for what I have done."

*Fawn is surprised by his comment, then reflective* You have much skill in magic, and you are very wise, wise enough to see past all those things that happened, can you not simply....give your legs life again?

Gidie sighs. "Perhaps. Even if I couldn't reestablish the connection, I could certainly animate them. But do I deserve them? I think not." He trails off, and then adds abruptly, "I think it is time you find your room. You will want to be well-rested for your journey."

Yes, thank you very much sir. Good night. *Fawn goes to her room with a lot to think about*
