I can't wait for Solo: a Star Wars Story to be released! Let's think of all the ways this could go wrong. You just have to think like a writer who treats a storied franchise like a kid playing with his Star Wars toys *cough Rian Johnson cough* and this will be easy.
Here's one: The whole movie is just two hours of Han and Chewie talking at Mos Eisley while the other characters walk by repeatedly. At the end, Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker walk up to their table in a CGI cameo. *cue end music*
I don't appreciate the Johnson hate, but I do like your awful Solo plot. I'll have some fun with this.
He's right about Rian Johnson y'know. It's one thing to be subversive and risky but it's another thing entirely to refuse to do anything that will make the fans happy (even though they're the people you're trying to please in the first place).
For the sake of not having to articulate a well thought out rant about episode IX, I'm not going to get into that sort of debate... but just know that a little more than 50% of the fanbase agrees that Rian Johnson really messed up with IX.
Han Solo tries to join the Imperial Navy when he's a young lad, for he has dreams of being a pilot. Fortunately he is quickly disillusioned when he realizes he has to follow rules.
Han gambles the Millenium Falcon off of Lando Calrissian.
Han meets Chewie, somehow.
SCI-FI TRAIN ACTION SEQUENCE!!!
FLYING THROUGH AN ASTEROID BELT ACTION SEQUENCE!
Lot of boring filler sequences.
Fin.
But hey, at least it doesn't seem like from the trailer that they majorly hammed anything up (nevermind the fact that they changed the front of the Millenium Falcon for some reason).
Oh, and at the end: it somehow segways into how he ended up in Mos Eisley, and there's an awful CGI cameo of not Ewen Mcgreggor and not young Mark Hamill that shows up asking him for a ride.
Oh and Han is also CGed, and somehow, so is Chewie.
Inb4 his girlfriend had something to do with the rebellion, and breaks ol' Han's heart at some point.
That or she's just a pointless filler character for Han to stare at.
Isn't Hollywood's cynicism great?
For the love of Bantha fodder why didn't I type Alec Guinness?

I'm done arguing about The Last Jedi, if you liked it, great, if you hated it, well, I feel sorry that you can't enjoy this movie, but hey, how am I gonna change your mind? However, I will say that Rian Johnson made VIII, not IX. Simple mistake, just pointing it out.

It's hard to keep these darned roman numerals straight now XD

It's okay. Let's just hope they never try to make an Episode X.
Sorry the previous two messages are gone and my message is in your box, the formatting got super messed up.
I'm super excited for Episode IX because:
-the end of VIII obviously left the story incomplete (although still with more finality than VII)
-the saga's soundtrack currently does not end with that throne room theme and grand blast that ended the previous two trilogies
-IX is the end of George Lucas's originally envisioned saga
-IX is supposed to end the Skywalker Saga and tie all three trilogies together
If they try to find a way to make more Episodes after IX, the things that will make IX so meaningful will be rendered meaningless. I'm all for future standalones and even separate trilogies or sagas, as long as nothing takes place after Episode IX.

Funny thing is -- the original trilogy is a perfectly happy and triumphant note to end on. This new trilogy is riddled with loss and unnecessary tragedy... but that's just my take on it.
What I do know for certain is that George Lucas could've made a better VII VIII and IX, especially if he would've had help and criticism during the filmmaking process (the lack of which seriously hurt the prequels). The guy knows how to write up thematic elements, but wasn't too good with details. Much of what made episode IV great was, in fact -- brilliant post-editing and suggestions made by other filmmakers and the actors themselves (the term lightsaber was coined by Aleck Guinness, if it weren't for him the word 'laser sword' or the like would've assaulted our ears).
Once you buy somebody else's company and try to do things on your own without allowing the original creator to have at least some measure of control or input... their original vision, and thus, the way the story was supposed to go, is gone. This is what happened with BIONICLE when LEGO didn't have Greg Farshtey write the reboot, and this is what happened when Disney decided to continue the Star Wars saga... in their own 'creative' direction... the results are a mixed bag of cool characters but massive mishandling.
Since George Lucas is completely out the window, and because Disney is so fond of cash-grabs (be it by recycling their own content, stealing from the public domain, or buying other franchises to be used as money-making proxies) there likely will be an episode X. And if it doesn't flop too hard, there will be an XI and XII.
That said -- with approval ratings for episode VII dropping so rapidly... I hope IX also doesn't do well so I don't have to put up with Disney's shenanigans anymore

I agree that VI had a perfectly fine ending and didn't need any more, but when it was originally made it wasn't intended to be the end of the saga. However, J.J. and the gang will have a hard time trying to make IX's ending on par with that (or better).
I also agree that since George has been barely involved with the sequels, it's not really his vision any more. But at least the nine episodes he promised back in the '70s will finally be completed. Even if it's done by other people, I still think that's really cool, and at least they have been using some aspects of his original plan.
I personally wish that everyone would be able to shut up and enjoy Episode IX for what it is whenever it comes out, but obviously that won't happen because of all the people that are determined to hate all new Star Wars.

Honestly -- I like to think that all the negativity towards these new films is purely out of a love for the old films. There's just something about this new era of movies that is too cynical, too cash-grabby.

I wish I could agree, but I'm honestly pretty sure that a large part of it just comes from mindless trolls who are hating for the sake of it. Or just out of principle for it being under Disney. They've made themselves blind to the fun that can be had with these new movies. I'm sorry if you feel that way and I can respect it, I just wish some people would be as quick to see the good in these films as they are to see the bad. I mean, lots of people had a blast watching TLJ (I know I did), but some people just weren't willing to see that it could be fun and let themselves enjoy it. I just feel sorry when people can't enjoy a movie that had so much work and thought put into it. I'm not going to try and change your mind on VIII, but I do ask you to at least try to enjoy Episode IX when it comes out. Just let yourself have fun when you first watch the finale of the Skywalker Saga (even if it isn't the same as we'd have gotten from GL), and maybe then you can criticize later if you really want to.

The real problem is when they criticize the new films for problems they ignore in the old films.
Ignore everything I say, to the best of your ability.

Well... here's the thing:
I wanted to see the good in these films. I went into episode VII nervous but hyped all the same... it was a fun and satisfying ride... right up until the end of course T_T
Still, though: I was willing to enjoy TLJ if Luke was done right, and I was looking forward to see what would happen with Kylo Ren's character.
They delivered on the second bit... but not at all on the first bit. In my opinion it seems like Disney is purposely trying to 'subtlely' subvert Star Wars so as to remove all the old characters we love, and superimpose new ones to make their own brand and... well, that's just not a bandwagon I can get behind. As much as I want to like Kylo, Rey, and the rest -- I just can't trade them for the likes of Han Solo or Luke Skywalker. I don't want to stay in one spot, but TLJ pretty much drew a line in the sand: either kill the past to walk into the future, or cling to it and don't... and if I have to make that choice, I'd quite honestly prefer to go one step further and kill the future so I can enjoy the past undisturbed.
That's just my take on it of course. I understand that about 49% (or less) of people who saw the movie were prepared to make that leap... but I'm just not.

I'm still mad they killed off Obi-Wan in episode IV!
