Welcome, my friends, to the Diogenes club. This club is modeled after the fictional establishment from the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
As in those stories, people here may do whatever they want, with the single rule that no one is permitted to talk and/or interact with anyone else, and so talking, whispering, shouting, singing, and all other
forms of vocalization are not, in any circumstances, allowed, except in the Stranger's room, in order to create an environment of complete serenity and calm. We have an exceedingly fine collection of
literature, both fiction and non-fiction, many comfortable armchairs, and a delectable assortment of various foods and drinks, which may be studied and consumed in the peace of complete silence.
We hope you will enjoy your time at the Diogenes club. :tounge:
A man walks in and gives a letter to the secretary. It reads:
Hello. I will be staying here for a short while for the purpose of analyzing War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. If you could bring me a cup of black coffee, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
What is "The Diogenes"? I'm sorry, I've never read any Sherlock Holmes novels.
The Diogenes is essentially what I described; a club founded for unsociable, shy, and misanthropic guys who don't want to go to clubs where they'd have to talk, but don't mind comfortable chairs and reading. :tounge: So, no member is allowed to speak or interact with anyone else. :tounge:
The club is frequented by Sherlock's older, smarter, brother Mycroft, which is how it comes into the stories.

Diogenes is actually a Philosopher from the time of Alexander the Great.

This is a great idea! I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes. Have you read the books?

*sit's quietly in a corner.*
Thank you! I'm also a big fan. I once got the huge complete Sherlock Holmes volume from my library and read straight through it. The only parts I haven't read are large parts of backstories from A study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, and the valley of fear. I prefer the short stories to the novels. :tounge:

*I order a cup of tea and some biscuits*
I did get a little bored reading the backstories. But the last time I read them I did get interested in the backstories. Do you have a favorite one?

I don't think I have just one favorite, but some of my favorite stories are The Red-headed league, The Speckled Band, The Man with the Twisted Lip, The Yellow Face, and The Blue Carbuncle.

Those are some of my favorites. I've been reading them over again. Because there's a few of them I don't remember so well. I just finished The Missing Three Quarter.

Ooh, I don't remember that one. I should read it again. :tounge: What do you think is the weirdest story? I think it's the Creeping man. It's almost sci-fi.

That is a good one. I think The Cardboard Box is really creepy.
