If Matoro ((SPOILERS)) died, then how does anyone understand Nuju?
I'm a bit shaky on lore after the Hordika, since my main exposure to BIONICLE was the Chronicles and Adventures books, but I don't think this was ever addressed. If it was, fill me in. If it wasn't... speculate!

I think (I could be wrong, it's been a while since I read Downfall and I'm not even sure the books are canon anymore ) that Nuju started talking in Matoran speech after Matoro's death.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of the tropes that the Turaga displayed on Mata Nui were just an act to seem old and benign
The Turaga have lied to the Matoran so much
Well, to be honest: if I was trying to lead an entire species of amnesiac weaklings, and had to maintain the notion that our people were primitive and didn't come from a city that was now overrun with who-knows-what (especially knowing that there are no Toa to protect said city) I would act a little crazy, just to make everyone thing we were a primitive civilization.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened as well.
Is it bad that that makes me sad? XD I just really thought that Nuju's way of talking really accented his character. I loved how dedicated he was to a silly thing like that!

"As a Turaga, Nuju gradually began to speak only in the language of the birds, training Matoro to be his translator. Nuju claimed that the change in language was due to the fact that if others did not have the patience to hear him speak, then they were not worth talking to. He retained his knowledge of the Matoran language, but used it only in emergencies, such as explaining to a newly-arrived Toa Mata Kopaka his quest." -Biosector
So apparently -- it wasn't an act. He genuinely preferred the crazy made-up language he was speaking. He could, however, still speak Matoran. He just never wanted to.
Probably in case there were nearby Matoran dropping some eaves.
Also, because at the time, LEGO hadn't come up with Metru Nui yet.
"At the time" it was the Toa Hordika books. I'm pretty sure Metro Nui existed XD
Nuju spoke in clicks and whistles as early as 2001. This is evident in MNOG, where Matoro translates Nuju's clicks and whistles for you.

Good point, but I think Nuju's speak was more than just a trope. After all, he even spoke it when talking to Vakama when they were clearly alone.
Actually, this raises some concerns. It's explicitly stated that Matoro knew all the Turaga's secrets because he translated for Nuju at the Turaga's meetings, implying they didn't understand him.

Too bad we can't ask Greg anymore
Well, at least we know WHY he can't go to BZPower or something. At this point we just need to hope that some fan LEGO forum like BZPower, or even LMBE, sets up an age verification system, as unnecessary as that may seem.
