M y favorite character has always been Samwise Gamgee, the stout-hearted. He really is, as Tolkien once wrote, the chief hero. Without his simple devotion to Frodo and
bravery, evil would have ruled Middle-earth. And while at the beginning he perhaps had some of the conceit that some Hobbits have regarding the outside world, he moved
past it to long for greater wonder and beauty, and to understand that there are things to high to truly comphrehend, but that makes them all the more wonderful.
Couldn't agree more. Even as I've learned about other characters from the Silmarillion, UT, etc., good ol' Sam has always been my favorite.
