Things certainly don't look very good for you guys.
Sorry if I'm butting in, but I'm thinking about joining this HQ and this post looked quite foreboding. How many more troops would we get if I joined the HQ?
Don't worry too much. I have plans.
No problem. 25.
Well, if we manage to equip most of our forces to a high standard, say, plate armour, heavy pole arms, crossbows and longbows, we might get off. We could also have a part of our army detach and make logistics raids on enemy caravans, to starve them.
The Bear Army was 250. The Xain sent 100 along with the Bears, so I'm imagining 200-300, possibly with reinforcements afterwards.
I'm thinking more like several thousand. Think about it this way: If each of the three Southern kingdoms can each gather an army of around 150 men, all of the kingdoms together could gather nearly 6,000. The Xains are here to crush all of them, so they need to have more than that.
Oh dear. That dampens our prospect a little. I better get cooking with this fancy Old Magic...

I'd choose longbows over crossbows. They're more powerful if used correctly. However, crossbows are much more accurate and easier to use. I do agree with your idea of equipping them with heavy armor and polearms, but they should have swords as well.

But longbow-men are harder to train, and I think (I'm not sure, though), that crossbows would have better penetration against armour such as gamberson. Hardened plate, however... just beat the poor chap with a war hammer. But, how about we have two main types of troops: Normal Men-At-Arms with swords, some pole arm, crossbows, perhaps a mace, a shield and plate, mail and gamberson armour, then, archers, with similar weapons and armour and longbows?

I have two pieces of advice:
1. If you made any friends in the North during that little Civil War a while back, call them.
I write to thee in time of great need. The Xain Empire, of the far land of Kahltrain, are plotting an invaison. Already, they have aided the remnants of the Bear Kingdom in an attempt to conquer the South. They failed, barely. I envision a mighty force capable of crushing the Southern Kingdoms and the North.
Therefore, I beg aid of thee. Send reinforcement, and assist us in the coming war.
IC: *Elbrin sets about collecting the herbs needed for his practice, as he used many at the Ruins.*
OOC: What's the layout of our fortress? And what is the surrounding area like?
OOC: We did. We got off better than the Forest Band, though - they started with over two hundred, and ended with 25. However, they trained more almost at once.
IC: *Demiu, once the troops have started training, goes to his quarters.*
OOC: I think it's a Keep with Great Hall, sleeping rooms, etc. surrounded by a wide courtyard and curtain wall. The area around, to quote teh starter post, is ''rolling hills and fertile dales.''
OOC: Ouch, that's true.
*Having collected the necessary herbs, Elbrin also goes to catch some much-needed shuteye.*
OOC: OK, thanks.
