The Lego Message Boards was a thing I was on for 5-6 years. The main reason why it shut down is because of Lego Life.Or was it? Since Like basically everyone on here we were on the Lego Message Boards. Looking back these were the Lego Message Boards: Fan arguments the theme vs theme topics, the should police have guns debates, and the unforgettable The Simpsons set fan war
It was mainly teens and young AFOL’s Deep down we know this is true.
Bashing Lego There were themes that were talked bad about we all know it.
Lego wasn’t talked about in half of the Message Boards This mainly refers to the licensed themes. I was mainly on the Star Wars forum and it was mainly Star Wars and not Lego.

I myself was mostly in Community Chat, so an even less Lego-related forum than what you were familiar with.
The MBs weren't the only thing they closed in that time. The gallery soon followed. I suspect the overall reason is that they didn't want to keep dedicating resources to that community, they probably felt they weren't getting enough return. Probably true, though I know for myself my interest in Lego waned after those communities were gone. I had no incentive to keep building stuff.
