It's been like seven years since I first wrote Silent. It was pretty bad, but somehow it still managed to be a fan-favorite...or a friend-favorite at least. I'm planning on revising the characters' backstories and generally trying to do a better job writing then I did.
First chapter coming soon!

Chapter 1- Hanna
A teenage girl shovels bites of pancakes into her mouth, her platinum-blonde hair falling into her face. "Mum...after this, can I go hiking with my friends? They said they'd go up to the mountains, and I'd practically die if I missed it."
"Well, if it means you won't die, have at it," her mother replies with a joking grin. "More pancakes, Hanna?"
"No thanks. I think this is enough."
"Suit yourself. Though I think you'd do better out there if you were less of a pine needle...remember you got all woozy and broke your leg last time?"
Hanna subconsciously swings her left leg. "But I'll be fine this time, Mum, I promise! I'll bring some granola bars."
"Take an apple as well, love," her mother replies; her daughter nods and grabs one out of the refrigerator. A car drives into the driveway of the Lynches' house in the country, and an older boy rolls down his window.
"You comin', Rosie?"
Hanna runs toward the car, clumsily sliding her feet into a pair of comfort boots and buttoning her coat. "Bye then, Mum."
"Have fun, sweetheart." As the car drives off, the woman sighs. "Up goes my medical bill."

Chapter 2- Mountain
Dirt and gravel crunch under their feet as the children continue on their way. Mac, the leader of the expedition, watches everyone from the back, while Lulu, the shortest and most observant, stays in front as a "lookout" of sorts, though the one doing the most looking around is a fascinated Hanna.
"We're very high on the mountain, aren't we?" Hanna breathes. "It's beautiful up here. I don't get how anyone could be afraid of heights."
The least friendly of the bunch, Will, makes a note of this. "If you're not afraid of heights, then why don't you go up that tree on the side and grab me a crystal fruit, eh?" (Crystal fruit is a mineral that grows on native trees in the Crystal Mountains. It's rare and has been said to have properties relating to good luck and possibly even love.)
Hanna nods, and there is a silence- her friends can hear her swallow. But she doesn't break it- she skids down the side of the mountain, slipping on leaves and needles, and grabs onto the trunk. She pulls herself up and begins to scale it.
"Hanna! Be careful, you're-"
"I know what I'm doing," Hanna mutters, tugging, working, twisting, and finally pulling the fruit off the tree. As she settles, however, she makes a fatal mistake- she grabs onto a weak branch, which snaps in her hands- her legs give out and she tumbles down. The wind leaves her body, and she swears she hears her bones break. She's seeing double, it's all a blur, the pain unendurable...
...and then it's gone, gone with her consciousness. She can't hear her friends yelling her name, scrambling after her like squirrels up a tree when they spot a person....
