You could try reading the HTHMAJJTCM series! I'm kidding, that group of stories probably need rewriting themselves.
I think just the webisodes would do, it's not much but it worked for me (though I suppose I was mostly just making up my own stuff or ripping off G1). Besides thst you could try Journey to One or browse all related pages on the Biosector 1. There were also a series of books and graphic novels which may help.

It is, in fact, an Apprentice story, though yet again I feel like a fake fan because I barely remember the original story, I didn't finish reading the sequel, and I'm only borrowing the concepts that I like without paying too much attention to the rest of the details. I figure I can sort of get away with it since my story is set in Okoto and not anything G1-related, but still, I feel kinda bad.

HTHMAJJTCM stands for Hewkii's Travels, Hahli and Macku's Adventures, Jaller's Journal (or it's more serious sequel, Jaller's Journey) and To Catch a Muaka. It was a co-write series I did with Jayzor, 6CB6 and SuperTrooper132 on the MB's. It didn't have a huge audience...
Anyway, I wouldn't feel guilty for not finishing the sequel, it hasn't even been written in it's entirety and was last updated in June 2016. Besides, not going 100% canon (whether canon-canon or fan-canon) gives you more room to be unique and take your own direction and view on the concept, which, in the end, is what a writing class is all about.
I think I remember the story on the LMB's; didn't it become a bit of a co-write with a guy by the name of Bobofoot?

I don't think thr series is out there on the web. It could probably be rewritten itself (we were discussing rewriting it before the LMB's crashed).
I really liked the story, though I don't particularly recall the premise at thr moment.
