Yesterday I made my way over to the LEGO Store for the first time in about 4 years, searching for a set that wasn't supposed to be out yet: The Harley Davidson Fat Boy. Release Date: August 1. Current date: July 18. Fortunately, some sets get released early for online ordering and in-store pickup for VIP members, and the Harley was available through that on the 17th. I picked up the set, paid the hefty $99.99 price tag, or took her home to build. My wallet may be lighter, and my bank account may be sad, but I'm happy as a clam.
Build: The build on the cycle is very satisfying. There are lots of complex building techniques implemented, as is expected in a Creator Expert set. Plenty of sideways building (Even some upside-down building), a great mix of Technic and regular parts, and a mostly great adherence to S.N.O.T. (Studs Not On Top) make this a really cool set to assemble. The building order makes sense as well, save for one thing. The order goes: Engine / Chassis, Back Wheel, then Front Wheel + Detailing, then the Stand. This build order is great except for the Detailing part. While it makes sense to add detailing after the rest of the cycle, it's fairly difficult due to the fact that this set doesn't balance well without the Stand (Built afterwards) or the kickstand (Included in Detailing). While adding the finishing touches, the cycle would constantly fall over which was a bit frustrating. I wish the stand had been assembled first so it was easier to add the detailing. This is a minute complaint, but it did affect my experience. The build took me about 2.5 hours from start to finish.
The character limit on these posts really hurts me, so I'll have to post part two as a reply.
Look: Oh wow. This thing looks exceptional. It's quite large, just over a foot long, and maybe 8 inches tall and 6 inches wide. Despite how large it is, it doesn't look cumbersome or barren. There's enough detail to keep it from looking barren, but not so much that it's hard to hold.
Playability: Honestly, I don't expect to find myself playing with this set, more just displaying it. However, this seems to be the main purpose, as the playability isn't great. The back wheel is hard to turn due to a small stick poking out into it. This, I'm sure, was supposed to keep it from spinning too quickly and messing up the gears and chains that move the pistons, but it's almost impossible to move on it's own! On the flip side, the handlebars are far too loose, so steering the thing or even making it drive straight during play isn't easy.
Overall, I really like this set. It may take time, but this may be my favorite set ever despite the lack of playability. It's sturdy and detailed, satisfying to build, and simply a majesty to look at. Plus, the Bionicle Axxon not only fits on it perfectly, but his armor matches too! Great for display, not great for just play.
