-prologue-
Raven stood at the railing of a bridge, resting her arms on the top, the cool breeze whipping through her dark hair as the water gleamed beneath her. The misty air was calming, relieving her stress as she stared into the shining waters. The sun was setting, which meant that the colors reflected onto the surface of the bay, soothing, satisfying...
Someone grabbed her hand. She turned around, curious. A petite, redheaded girl smiled gently at her. Raven watched as she spoke to her. She didn't hear her voice, but she followed the movements of her lips.
"Are you feeling alright?"
Raven nodded.
"I'm sorry. You just looked so wistful, and I was curious..." Raven noticed that the redhead had some sort of accent, though her English skills seemed good.
Raven nodded more vaguely.
"Can you speak?"
She nodded. "Yes. Though I'm not sure how clear I am, I've known how to speak aloud since I was small." After a moment's hesitation, she clarified, "I'm deaf."
"Oh," the girl replied simply. "That explains why you were using sign language while you were talking. But you speak very well. I don't know the American variant though..."
"I can read your lips."
"Oh. Um..." She giggled nervously, then added, "My name is Naomi Reid."
"My name is Raven Lee." She spelled it out in sign language.
Naomi nodded. She turned around and walked away. Curious, Raven followed her.
She seemed to be heading toward a small café near Forrest Ave., opening the door and letting Raven in first.
Raven was hit by a delicious smell, and a plump, friendly-looking young woman manned the counter. She had a name tag that said "LINDE."
Naomi talked to Linde, indicating Raven. The young baker nodded, then called for someone. A tall young man, with messy blonde hair and a nametag reading LUKAS, came out and signed to Raven. How may we help you, young lady? Raven was somewhat relieved to have an interpreter, even though she was perfectly capable of reading lips.
"Um..." Can I see the menu, please?
You'll want to be seated first, miss...
Raven chuckled nervously. "Oh." Sorry! I hadn't realized this was a sit-down café.
Lukas nodded. I see. Well, we will try our best to make sure you feel comfortable here.
