Here I will be re-uploading and remastering some of my favorite installments in my Silent series, written by me on the old MB's. Lately I've been frustrated with how new installments have been turning out, so I'm going back to my roots.
Index:
Silent: A Story (2014)
Silent II (2014)
Silent III (2014)
Silent IV (2014-15?)
Silent V (2015 I think...?)
Silent VI and beyond may eventually be posted here as well! (probably in another thread though, but on the same board)
I will start by posting the first chapter of Silent 1 on here. (The chapters then were pretty short, so I may combine some.)
Hanna breathed heavily as she continued up a steep mountain. She tried to climb faster, despite the fact that her toes were numb in her soft Uggs. "There it is," she panted as she finally caught up to the summit. "The emerald that those shadow things were going after. I see it." She reached for it, but her foot struck a rock and she tumbled to the side. She wasn't hurt. "Close call," she panted, and attempted reaching for it again, finally managing to touch it, until her foot slipped and she managed to catch herself on a ledge. She pulled herself up and sighed. "I wasn't made for mountains," she admitted as she finally climbed high enough to be in reach of the emerald. With the emerald finally tucked under her arm, she felt warmer, more satisfied, as she descended.
"I know what I'm doing," Hanna quietly reassured herself. "If I keep this with me, they won't be able to get it...which is good, right?" She chuckled and kept climbing down, carefully avoiding dangers like sharp rocks, poisonous plants and slippery mud.
Things took a turn for the worse when Hanna's foot slipped on a patch of mud she hadn't watched for, and she began to plummet to the waters below, hitting the sea floor like concrete. It was enough to knock her senseless, warm liquid surrounding her body like steeping tea.
The red surfaced as a young man was unwinding at the bottom of the water. He didn't want this girl to drown, so he pulled her up, but she didn't respond. He didn't know any doctors, but he knew someone who could certainly help; the man got into a boat and began to row towards a lighthouse in the distance. He carried the unconscious young girl up the stairs and left her at its door.
The door opened. A somewhat disheveled old man looked down at the limp young woman and nodded soberly.
Those were the first words Hanna heard when her eyes finally opened. She remembered little more than her name, but she knew the elderly gentleman whose face she looked into had saved her.
"You were pretty mangled when I first saw you," he said as he helped Hanna up. She sat on the edge of the cot she had been laying on and listened. "I managed to repair most everything in your system, except..."
Hanna looked up and tried to speak. Silence, just a breath.
"Yes, your voice box was damaged beyond repair and I couldn't do anything about it. I can work on a vocal chip, but it will take a long time, I'm not sure I'll be able to live long enough to do it..." He chuckled sadly. "Anyway, please call me Dr. Julien. I'm an inventor; it's hard to believe, but I made this young man as well."
So she was a robot now, an android. This changed everything, but it changed nothing; she was still Hanna, sweet Hanna.
"Zane" took her by the hand and pulled her to her feet. "It has been a pleasure. If I hadn't found you, you would still be at the bottom of the ocean...thank you."
Hanna tilted her head.
"For allowing me to take you in. I'm sure it'll be alright if you stay with us for a while."
Hanna smiled quietly and nodded.
-----
"I'm sorry, my son..."
Hanna could only stand and watch as the man who rescued her began to fall asleep.
"This is for your own good."
She was in shock as he forced Zane's control panel open and turned his memory switch off. Zane closed the panel, and took one last, pitiful glance at his "sister" with a look that turned her heart to dust. Then he went blank.
Hanna walked inside and picked up the voice chip that Dr. Julien had worked so hard to finish. She placed it in her chest panel; wired would work like nerves to bring the data to her "throat." It was a relief to be able to make sound, but she couldn't form words and her voice was weak. Hanna was officially mute, but it was nothing compared to the death of her father. Holding her breath, Hanna turned off her own memory switch.
Hanna lay in the snow, looking up at Heaven, and all that God had to offer. The sky was blue that day, a beautiful, light blue that reminded her of hope. The snow was cold, but warm, soft, like a blanket enveloping her as she stared up at the sky. She just wanted to lay there forever as the Tree-horns roamed around her...
"Uh, guys? Come check this out..."
Hanna sat up and strained her ears. The person that had just spoke was male, with a high-pitched voice that ran like electricity...
"I, I think it's a girl. I'm not sure what she looks like from all the way back here, but..."
Hanna stood up.
"She just stood up. I think she hears me."
"She's probably not a threat, Jay," another male replied, his voice raspy, gritty like gravel. "Don't worry about it."
Another male proceeded to add, "Yup. That's a girl all right. What about her?" He chuckled and leaned in. "Is she cuuute~?"
"Cut it out, Kai," a female voice snapped, and Hanna heard a sound like someone being hit.
"Oww!"
As Hanna followed the noise, she began to see five teenagers face her way. Hanna began to make out their features; a short and skinny young man with messy, auburn hair, and a pale, boyish face strewn with freckles, whom she guessed was "Jay"; a slightly taller young man with a tan and scars, his hair like wildfire, who must have been "Kai"; a tall, muscular young man with a serious face; a curvy young girl with messy dark hair in a ponytail; and someone she mildly recognized, a very tall and lean young man with pale skin and a blonde flat-top.
The young man seemed to recognize her as well; his eyes widened and he seemed to be in a state of trance. He shook his head and said, "Ah, I think I need some time...please excuse me for a moment." His deep, smooth voice made him even more familiar to Hanna; his name must have started with Z. Zachary...Zian...Zane.
"Zane..." Jay reached for him sub-consciously; yes, that was his name.
A light bulb went off in Hanna's head; it was as if her memory switch had turned itself on. She suddenly remembered everything.
Hanna followed quietly, memories of the past haunting her as she strode carefully along the snow. She heard her voice, sweet, lilting, echoing through her head, her smile, and watched herself grow up...when finally her memories caught up, she shook her head and focused. The teens in front of her stopped, and so did she; she couldn't help but stare at what was in front of her. An enormous, beautiful, dragon-headed ship awaited the group. A ladder was already lowered for them to climb up, and Hanna followed, finally with family.
Is this your home? Hanna wanted to ask. She glanced about the place in awe.
A mildly attractive young man with tousled blonde hair smiled at him. "This, my friend," he told her, "is the Destiny's Bounty."
Hanna nodded. A fitting name.
"I heard everything," the blonde boy told her. "I'm Lloyd Garmadon, by the way, grandson of the First Spinjitzu Master."
The legend...? Wow...
"You must be Hanna Julien. I heard Zane talking to you..."
Hanna nodded and turned to the others.
"You're safe with us," Jay told her. "For now, at least."
"Woah, woah, she's staying?" Kai replied. "Did we agree to this?"
"She is my sister, after all," Zane replied. "And it does not seem she has a home in the first place."
"Our old master unfortunately passed on, and his brother, Lloyd's father, is serving time in prison," Zane informed Hanna. He sounded like he was struggling to keep his cool, internally overwhelmed by the recent events.
Lord Garmadon? I wouldn't be surprised.
"My mom's still here, though," Lloyd added. "She's resting in Wu's room, if you'd like to say...er, meet her." He looked away, embarrassed as if he'd offended the mute newcomer.
Hanna nodded quietly.
"You should probably go and rest," Lloyd told her. "Training begins tomorrow. And yes, I feel you should train, because you may have partially inherited the Element of Ice, given your relation to Zane, and you may want to know how to use it."
