So I thought...I've seen origin stories for characters for Cole (LordTigress), Zane, Echo, etc...why not contribute? So here is a little story about our favorite inventor boy!
---
Being an only child, it's not all it's cracked up to be.
Sure, you don't get an annoying little sister or a bossy big brother or anything, but sometimes ya feel alone, y'know?
I grew up in a junkyard in the middle of nowhere, so don't think I don't know what I'm talking about. I mean, I have loving parents, and all the ideas and materials I could ask for, but sometimes it's just not enough. I'm not saying I want to be rich...well, I kinda do, but I also sorta want adventure.
Now, I know, I'm kind of a coward. I freak out at that spider on the roof of our old trailer, and sometimes I even think a pile of clothes is something to be afraid of. (Yup. Not the biggest fan of laundry.)
So I guess this is like an origin story? Yeah, let's call it that. A few years ago, some old man with really long hair changed everything. But before that, some kids changed more.
Before I start rambling on, let's just get on with it, shall we? Yeah.
My room has no windows. It sucks. Well, my room is about the size of a closet, so it makes sense. Even if I'm small and skinny, I barely fit in it anyway. That's how tiny our trailer is. We got a lot of land, but not a lot of roof over our heads, if you know what I mean.
So I've got a bunk bed, even though it's just me sleeping in there. I like the top bunk for the altitude, so I use the bottom bunk for storage.
Anyway, I finally wake up. I see nothing. Welp. Guess it's dark again. What time is it?
I leave and look at the digital clock on the kitchen counter. 7:30. Phew. Probably a consequence of sleeping early.
Anyway, I see that my mom has laid out a plate of buttered goast for me. I look closer and see a pinch of cinnamon on each slice, and I silently cheer. I eat breakfast and put my dishes in the sink. Mom and dad are both gone. I guess they trust me. Mom's gone out to one of her ladies' groups, and dad is at work. I see I'll have to do school by myself.
I grab the stack of books from the bottom bunk and turn on the light, climbing back to bed to work. I'm still in my pajamas.
The information fills my head, and then is emptied onto the paper in front of me. I kinda have bad handwriting, so I'm awkwardly attempting cursive to make my mom happy. I'm just glad my spelling is okay.
After some time, I close the last book, dress myself, and walk outside, slipping on my shoes, which are at the door. I look around and think for a moment. There are a lot of ideas circulating in my head, but I decide to climb the nearest junk pile and look out at the desert around me, which is usually pretty empty, but sometimes I do see something.
I nearly slip on a loose tire, but I quickly regain my grip and get up onto the mountain of junk, peering out over the fence, and the brightly colored sign marking my home.
I see a blur in the distance, which excites me a bit. I stumble towards the front of the pile, but I happen to be so focused I slip on a piece of metal that isn't quite in there, embarrassingly tumbling down the huge heap of scrap. An obnoxious headache ensues.
Clutching my throbbing crown, I look up. I can barely open my eyes, but the blur - most likely human - seems to be coming toward me. I blink in an attempt to regain my sight and pull my body back, using the rusty metal plate in front of me as support. I regain my senses and shield the blazing sun from my eyes. That thing I saw is definitely human.
I run through the gate, expecting one of my parents or something, but this one is skinnier, younger. I blink again. My vision clears and I see a girl with brown hair that goes to about half her chest, and golden eyes. She's wearing a pink T-shirt and cutoff shorts, and she isn't much younger than me. "Hey there."
A bit awkwardly, I reply, "Hey."
She smiles at me. "I saw you fall back there. You okay?"
I blush a little, embarrassed. "Uh...yeah, I'm fine."
She sticks out her hand. "Ashlynn Taylor. Since I've decided we're friends now, you can call me Ash."
"Uh...Jay Walker." I chuckle a little, a habit of mine; I'm beginning to think it's becoming an involuntary tic. "Where are you off to? Getting back from school?"
"Oh, my aunt sent me to pick up some scrap so my uncle can fix her car, I guess?" She shrugs. "My family is weird."
"Haha, ditto," I reply. "Well, you pretty much came to the right place. I, uh...I live here." Whoops.
"Wait, you live here?" Danger zone! Is she gonna laugh? She just giggles a bit. "Well, that's convenient. Know where you guys keep the spare car parts?"
I laugh. "I don't know where we keep anything, but I'm glad to help you find what you're looking for." As long as the parts she's looking for aren't needles in the haystack that is our scrap heap, that is.
"Great! You're a huge help! Now...she needs a new door handle first of all."
I help her for a while, and then my mom comes home, and I attempt to hide her.
Mom gives me that look when I'm doing something she doesn't understand. "Jay...honey, are you hiding a girl in that old fridge?"
I tell my mom about Ashlynn's request, and to no one's surprise, she smiles and decides to help out as well. She's kind of that way, I guess, in sort of that "you're not allowed...without me" way. She probably knows her way around the place more than I do, being older than me and all.
Once we're done, I ask Mom where Dad is.
"Oh, he's still out running errands," she replies. I nod and look back at Ashlynn. She seems to be waiting for Mom to leave. I signal for her to wait a bit longer, and Mom asks if I finished my work and the dishes. With an annoyed sigh, I nod and reply with a yes. Sometimes my mom likes to get into my business.
She then asks what I was up to while she was gone, and I told her the obvious, that I had met Ashlynn while playing around the junkyard.
"Does she live around here? Do you know?"
"Uh, I'm not sure. I never asked her, she just sort of walked up so..."
"I live pretty close. Like, not in the desert, but pretty near there," Ashlynn replies. "It's kind of a suburban area, but a bit more spread out."
Mom went on about how she was so glad I had made a friend and about the importance of socialization, and I subtly rolled my eyes. Eventually, she said bye, and went into the trailer with a book in hand. I looked back at Ashlynn and whispered, "Sorry!"
"It's fine. My aunt can kinda be like that too," Ash replied with a giggle. "So...what do you wanna do?"
"I dunno. Wanna see my workshop?"
"You have a workshop?"
"Yeah. I've gotta put these ideas somewhere," I reply with a small laugh. "I invent all the time, even if it's just on paper."
Ashlynn nods and I lead her into a wooden building toward the back of the area. I open the door and, with a small smile, add, "Ladies first. Please watch your step."
Ashlynn laughs a bit. It kind of feels good making people laugh, especially when you're raised away from most people most of your life, and as an extrovert!
I close the door behind me and fumble for a light switch. When the lights come on, the room is shown to be filled with all sorts of neat contraptions, courtesy of yours truly. I grin proudly and begin the tour.

Great story, Z&E! The narration totally sounds like Jay, which of course makes it more fun to read. :3

Thanks! Yeah, I aimed for that. It's really fun to write too!

I agree! While reading it, I can practically hear Jay's voice in my head!
