If you bookmark a topic, it'll show up in the bookmarks tab, and you'll have a number up there alerting how many of your bookmarked topics have a new post. When you click on it, it'll display all of them, from most recently-posted on descending down. It helps me keep track of topics on boards I don't regular visit.
Oh, I didn't realize it made a whole new tab. That does sound useful.
Try it out sometime. It's the tab thing right up there next to "Messages" and "Profile" on the orange bar (though that might be a different color depending on your theme).

I currently don't have one, but I'll see if that changes when I actually make a bookmark.
