Matilda's eyes flashed dangerously, flaming with a fury Cole had never seen before. He was suddenly very glad he wasn't her enemy.
Sidicles cowered against the side of a filthy brick building, chin quivering like Jell-O. Matilda strode nearer to him, slowing her gait.
The wizard suddenly grinned maliciously, snatched a stick that looked similar to Matilda's wand from the folds of his purple robes, and waved it wildly at Cole. He cried out. "Avada Keda--!"
"NO!" Matilda dove for Cole and shoved him out of the way, but when nothing happened, and Sidicles dodged for Liana, Cole realized it was just a ruse. Matilda figured out the same thing, saw Sidicles running, and shrieked furiously. "You son of a creeper!"
Before Matilda could get off Cole and stop the warlock, the latter grabbed Liana by her silver hair and forced her to her feet. Philip roared in outrage and sprinted toward the man holding his sister, but the potion dripping on his torso was burning through his shirt and jacket, burning the skin underneath. Philip groaned and stumbled, and Sidicles snatched his arm and forced him up.
Matilda raised her wand to shoot a spell, but Sidicles jeered. "Ah-ah-ah! I wouldn't do that if I were you. . .One of these youngsters could get hurt."
Cole tried to get up, but it was literally slow progress. Despite the slow motion of his body, his heart was hammering furiously.
"If you don't want these pups blasted to pieces, I suggest you adopt a better attitude." Sidicles sneered. "Submit, and I'll let them go. Refuse, and you'll only see torn up bits of them."
Matilda's nostrils flared, but was silent.
Slow as molasses, Cole pulled himself halfway off the ground.
Liana struggled under the wizard's grip, but a sharp knock to the head quieted her.
Sidicles's beady eyes narrowed. "I see you need to think about it. I'll contact you when you're ready to talk." With a cackle, he tossed a potion bottle to the ground before the teenagers could escape.

Thank you!! Sorry-not-sorry for playing with your heartstrings.
There was a burst of light and smoke, and Sidicles, Philip, and Liana disappeared in a thick white cloud. Cole shouted in slow motion. "Nnnnnooooooo....!" There was a explosion of fire, and Matilda shoved Cole to the ground to shield him from the flames. For several seconds she lay on top of him, smothering his face in her navy blue robes.
"Gehoff." Cole mumbled.
The witch snorted. "Well, excuse me for trying to save your skin for the umpteenth time." She rolled off and stood up, briskly dusting her cloak with her hands. She glanced down at Cole and ordered tartly. "Get up. It should be wearing off about now."
He slowly stood up with a groan, and surveyed the scene. There was a small, shallow, smoky crater where Sidicles, Philip and Liana once stood. A few wisps of smoke rose into the rank night air. His muscles were still tensed up and slow, but his jaw and tongue were back to normal, allowing him to speak in a ordinary tone.
He stared at Matilda and exclaimed. "Where are they?!"
Matilda ran a hand through her brown hair, making her pointed hat crooked. "That's what I want to know." She muttered.
Cole glared at the little crater. He was furious with Matilda and himself for falling prey to that nut job. "Who was that?!"
The witch sighed and seated herself on a tire lying nearby. "Wolfric Sidicles. He's a scrawny, suck-up, money-loving warlock where I come from. I won't go into the details, but even though he's a warlock, whom are despised and cast out of villages lest they be killed, he always manages to find a way to make money. . .Usually by working for infamous crime lords."
Cole didn't see why they were doing story-time when two friends of theirs had just been bricking kidnapped, but he forced himself to calm down and listen to what Matilda was saying.
She gazed off into the distance, lip curling in disdain. "He always liked to be behind the seat of power; the loyal follower. . . Whatever gave him a good position."

Love the previous magic battle! Totally don't love Sidicles. Where did she come from? Matilda is so mysterious. I wanna see where this is going... Nice parts!

She fingered the wand in her hands. "He only knows how to brew potions of poison, he dosen't know how to use a wand. I should have known it was a trick when he pulled out a random stick and pretended to cast a curse on you...Corpus bones!" She cursed. "I should have known I was being followed! You remember when we were lost in those tunnels, and I blew one of them up?"
Cole had no idea what she was getting at, but all he said was; "How could I forget?"
"Well, those tunnels were a trap. Sidicles must have found out where I was, or where I was headed, and enchanted the tunnels to lead us to a..." She paused. "...A certain place. I only figured it out while you and Liana were lost that somebody laid out a trap to finish us off." She gazed off.
The street lamp dimly reflected her worn, tired face. Cole sat down beside her and waited to hear the rest.
There was a moment of silence before she continued. "I'm guessing he only wanted to get rid of you kids so he could find me and force me to go back with him."
Cole furrowed his eyebrows. "Who wants you exactly, and why?"
She turned to face him. "Let's just say...That there are other witches and warlocks where I come from who really don't like me."
"Why?"
She sighed. "There are multiple reasons...I've learned abilities they have no knowledge of, I've refused to join their "secret society" of witches and wizards, and probably because I've frustrated their attempts to rebel and take over." She smiled in grim humor. "I have made quite a few enemies over the years."
Matilda adjusted her hat and said in a matter-of-fact tone. "Recently I took part in stopping a rebellion, and the witch who is, in a way, leading their ridiculous society was furious." She laughed bitterly. "That's one of the reasons I've come out here, far away from that life...Not permanently, of course, but just until it cools down a bit."
She fell silent and scowled softly into the distance. Cole gazed at her, thinking about what she said.

Wait a minute... this proves it. MATILDA'S FROM THE WORLD OF MINECRAFT! I started looking into the storyline, characters, villains, etc. of Minecraft when I noticed parallels like the niece and nephew, the creeper references, and a couple other things I noticed. This proves it. I love it. Oooh, and now I know more about Matilda!

*points* Give the girl a prize!! xD Oh, man, there is such a story behind Matilda's character, more than anyone would ever care to know. Gosh, looking back on these crossover moments brings back memories. :3 --both good and awkward. xD
It was a strange thought, but it was true. While both left their homes for different reasons, they both knew they would have to return one day...Once the heat cooled down, that is.
Cole grinned unexpectedly, a soft one, but a grin nonetheless. How odd that he, a grumpy, introvertive teenager who never fit in anywhere, found something in common with a witch a little over twice his age with too many secrets to count. Fate certainly had an odd sense of humor.
His smile diminished when he remembered about Philip and Liana. How in Ninjago are we supposed to save them?! He wondered, for rescuing them was the only option to him. He opened his mouth to ask Matilda what they should when he realized there was something in his hand. Opening his clenched fist, he saw a piece of ripped purple cloth, and remember he had torn something from Sidicles's robes.
Curious, he fingered the travel-worn fabric and realized a pocked was stitched to the side of the cloth, and he inspected it with his fingers. He pulled out what looked like a small paper bag of sweet-smelling herbs. When he dug further into the pocket, he pulled out a couple of odd-looking gears that looked as if they came from an old clock, and a piece of crumpled paper that looked like a receipt.
"Look." He held out his hand to Matilda, and she raised her eyebrows in interest. "They're from that dude's outfit."
"Hm." She took the items from his hand and scrutinized them. She picked up the wrinkled receipt and read. " 'Bits 'N Bolts Flea Store' ." She chewed her lip. "I believe we passed by that store when we were on our way to Global Kitchen."
"What'd Sidicles buy?" Cole asked.
Her lip quirked. "He was always a bit of a pack rat...He likes to toy with bits of machinery when he's not working for bandits and crime lords or trying to help his little club take over. A hobby, really."

Yay! Awesome, is more revealed in Runaway or does her past remain a mystery to Cole? Oh wait. Never mind don't answer that, I'd rather wait and see. xD

She held up the packet of sweet-smelling herbs. "This looks like something you wouldn't want to put in your morning tea...I suspect this is an ingredient for some new torture poison."
Matilda stood up and briskly said. "Well, let's go."
"Why, the Bits 'N Bolts flea store, of course. Whoever sold these things to Sidicles might know where he's staying."
* * *
The flea store was stationed around the filthy dregs of Misawa, a run-down little building huddled in a corner between the Saigon Noodle restaurant and a hardware store. It was the middle of the night by the time Matilda and Cole slipped out of the shadows and stepped up to the entrance of the shop, a pair of once-green wooden doors. A paper taped to a dirty window read in crude handwriting; 'Sorry, we're closed.' A light flickering from inside the building said otherwise.
The dim street lamps cast dark shadows across Matilda's face, the brim of her hat shielding her eyes from sight. The streets were dark and nasty, trash littered everywhere. They were alone on the sidewalk, save for a stray cat wandering the night.
Cole pulled on the rusty handle of one of the doors, but they were locked. Flecks of peeling green paint came off on his hands, as well as bits of red rust. He frowned and whispered. "How are we going to get in?"
Matilda pulled her wand from her sleeve, waved it briskly at the aged door handles, and said. "Alohomora." There was a click, and the door unlocked.
Cole whistled. "Nice."
Door creaking, they cautiously stepped inside and Cole quietly shut the door behind him. The only light in the room was an old-fashioned oil lamp flickering atop a check-out desk several feet away, surrounded by dusty cardboard boxes, letters, sheets of aged paper, and pencils. The wooden walls were clogged with cobwebs at every corner.
