Corrupted
“You’ll only get one shot, Kai. If you miss your chance, it’s all over. Are you sure you want to do this?” “Yes—it’s what I have to do…” Kai took in a deep breath, cautiously glancing into the shadows on either side of him as he made his way slowly down the dark corridor. The only light came from the jagged pillars of dark stone protruding from the walls and the occasional flash of lightning from outside. Dim sparkles of purple danced at his feet as the eerie light scattered off the pale crystal compound he held clutched against his chest, but aside from the thunder the only sound was that of his own echoing footsteps. One shot… one chance to make things right. His master’s words reverberated in his mind, and he felt them shuddering in his chest with every shaky breath. One shot… just one shot… A floorboard creaked from down the hall and he froze, gaze snapping up toward the source of the sound. He had come to the end of the corridor now, where it opened up into a large room, but the far end was shrouded in darkness. Outside, thunder grumbled. He stared into the blackness, alert, straining his eyes for any sign of movement, but the shadows were still. Seconds passed like hours. His pulse thumped softly in his ears. He straightened, standing tall as he inhaled. Gripping the crystal in one hand, his other went instinctively to his side, but it met only void. He reminded himself that his sword still lay at the entry to the hall—for once in his life, he had not come to seek a fight.
“I know you’re there.” He fought to keep the tremor out of his voice as he spoke and stood waiting, eyes still searching the darkened side of the room. There was a pause, and then another creak. A silhouette detached itself from the deeper black, and, trailing sickly purple smoke, stepped out of the shadows and into the center of the room. “You shouldn’t have come.” Kai felt his stomach knot inside him, his first instinct demanding he avert his gaze. He ignored it, breathing slowly, forcing himself to stand his ground and look up, though the sight that awaited him caused his chest to constrict. Cold purple eyes stared back at him, expressionless. They represented all the color that remained in the scowling visage—all else seemed to have leeched away, leaving only grey behind. “Skylor,” he murmured, his grip tightening slightly around the crystal, “It’s time to come home.” He was met with a cold laugh and an equally icy sneer. “I am home.” He inhaled slowly, closing his eyes, forcing himself to master his emotions, to quell the mingled grief and fury that rose up within him. One shot… one chance to make things right. To lose his composure now was to lose any chance he had of success. With a strength born of desperation, he forced his anger down and lifted his gaze once more. “No. No, you’re not.” Slowly, deliberately, he moved his right hand, palm up, extending it, but kept the crystal hidden in his left. She tensed visibly and he suppressed his instinct to do the same. He knew any sudden move could trigger an attack. “I’m not here to fight you, Skylor. I’m here to help…” She shifted her weight back, wary. “I don’t need help. Garmadon has given me strength—I don’t want your ‘help’ if it means you’ll try and take that away from me...”
“Alright—alright.” He did his best to keep his tone aloof as he lowered his hand, cautiously stepping closer. Though he’d hoped to convince her, he’d hardly expected compliance. Even from here he could feel the darkness emanating from her—this was not his old friend. Whatever she had become, he could not expect Skylor to listen to reason… he could only hope the real Skylor was still in there somewhere. She stiffened at this, stepping away. “Stay back!” “Hey—it’s okay.” He moved cautiously forward again. “I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to talk…” He knew the crystal was still too far away to capture the dark power. He had to get closer… Again she moved back, this time raising her hands defensively in front of her. “I know what you’re doing. We have nothing to discuss! Now leave—before I change my mind about letting you go…” He stopped where he was, hesitating, and lowered his gaze. “Very well…” Exhaling, he turned, as if to go, and added quietly. “I’m sorry.” The next instant he whirled, closing the gap between them in one swift leap, hoping desperately that the dark power would have disrupted Skylor’s elemental ones lest she read his mind and sense his plan. And indeed she stumbled back, caught off-guard by his sudden move, and then lifted her hands, dark power beginning to pulse around them. Her reflexes were quick, but Kai was faster, and before she had the chance to fully shield herself he grabbed her arm, thrusting the crystal forward. She gave a shout of alarm and he flinched a little—it pained him to hear her distress, but he knew this was his best chance to save her. He pressed the crystal against her shoulder as they tumbled backwards into a heap, bracing himself.
The crystal did not glow, as he had been told it would. It did not begin to fill with the darkness that had stolen his friend away. Scarcely did he have time to realize what was happening before a blast struck him square in the chest. The crystal flew from his hands as he was flung across the chamber, landing hard with a gasp at the other side. He hadn’t realized she’d be so strong—strong enough to keep her powers from the crystal’s pull… In an instant, Skylor was back on her feet, eyes flashing. “You fool! You dare try and deceive me?” Dark power blazed around her hands, and he could feel the pulsing energy crackling like static through the room. Thunder crashed outside as Kai scrambled to his feet, heart racing. “Skylor, please!” he begged, “This isn’t you! I know you’re still in there—you’ve got to fight it!” He reached for the crystal, and to his panic realized it was no longer there. His heart sank as he caught sight of it where it lay on the other side of the room. Now she was the one advancing, purple light flooding the room around her. “This is who I am now! You should have left while you had the chance…”
Desperately Kai stumbled forward, hoping to avoid her and snatch the crystal again, but he felt himself freezing as energy constricted around him, lifting from the ground. He gasped, wincing as the darkness stung against his skin, looking down. Wielding the darkness, Skylor held him suspended in the air. “This is the true meaning of power!” she crowed, “And none shall take it from me! The darkness is mine to command! I won’t let you steal it away!”
Swinging her arm, she flung him back to the wall, and he stifled a yelp as he collided with it, dropping to the floor. But he had no time to nurse his wounds, for immediately she sprung at him again. Lifting his hands just in time, he formed a fireball to block a blast of darkness as he quickly found his feet. “This isn’t about power, Skylor!” he pleaded, “It’s about you! Please… this power is hurting you! Changing you! Please, you’ve got to listen to me!”
“I’ve listened for long enough!” Raising her hands again, she lifted him from the ground, sending him flying across the room. With a cry he struck the opposite wall and fell, wincing, dimly conscious of a dull pain in his side. He lay gasping, winded, as she advanced again, looking up at her through a haze of pain and grief. One shot… one chance to make things right… One shot, and he’d missed it. Skylor stood over him, eyes narrowed with anger, darkness pulsing around her hands. “I was a fool to believe in you,” she hissed. “You abandoned us! You left us to fight a battle we could never have hoped to win! You left us to give everything we had—in vain! We needed you and you weren’t here…” Kai winced, tears stinging his eyes as he lay panting. His strength had abandoned him—he knew he could not withstand another attack. “Skylor, I—I’m so sorry,” he whispered. “I—I never meant to go! We didn’t have a choice… we would have been killed if we stayed!” He bit his lip, fighting back tears. “I’m sorry we didn’t make it in time… I’m sorry we weren’t here. I… I’m sorry I couldn’t stop this.” Now he could not hold back his emotion. His voice trembled from pain and grief, and tears blurred his vision. “I—I can’t change what happened. I can’t take back what you’ve been through. What we weren’t here to protect you from. But there’s something else I can’t change—and that I’d never want to.” Shakily he let out his breath. “And that’s how much I love you…” She watched him silently, but through his blurry vision he thought he caught a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. And then he caught sight of something else—the crystal, lying just a few feet away. “Please, Skylor,” he whispered, cautiously reaching out for it. “I know you’re still in there—I know you can hear me! I know you know he’s been lying to you...”
The darkness around her hands seemed to waver, flickering in and out. A mixture of emotions crossed her face, and still she hesitated, uncertain. Kai’s hand closed around the crystal, and he pulled it close to him, shakily pushing himself into a sitting position despite the pain that radiated from his side at the move. “Skylor, it’s not too late… we can still fix this! We can still make things right…” For a moment longer she stood still, frozen, hesitating, and then with a small sob the facade broke. She dropped to her knees and flung herself forward, throwing her arms around him. Wincing, he caught her, pulling her close. “It’s okay—it’s okay,” he reassured her, “You’re going to be alright now…” “Make it stop,” she whispered, burying her face in his shoulder. “You’ve got to make it stop… I can’t hold on much longer!” “We will,” he promised, drawing the crystal closer. “Just hold on…” A white glow enveloped them as he brought the crystal near, burning away the darkness around them as it grew brighter and brighter. Light filled the dark chamber as they held each other close, surrounding them and filling the cold air with warmth again. And for the first time since he’d entered those dark halls, Kai felt his heart swell with a new warmth as well— Hope.

I have never quite CONprehended Skylor and her role. Dis is cool stuff!
Thank you! It's been a long time since I've written anything for the Ninjago fandom and I've really missed it tbh... It's great to be back and working on stuff here again.
Despite slowly dying inside from feels, I did enjoy writing this too XD
