Luke opened his mouth but could conjure no sound. His head pounded--shock, awe, pride, embarrassment, and more... He took in the king's words like a child hungry for their father's wisdom. Wishing there could be a better way to express his gratitude, all he could murmur was, "Thank you, sire... that-- that means the world to me..." The king cast him a sympathetic smile. "Do not worry yourself over anything. All will be taken care of, including yourself. For now, rest. You deserve it." With that, he and the queen departed. The queen took a moment to pat Luke's hand lightly as she walked out. Joy's father joined them in the hall and they talked in low voices, too low for him to hear. Not that he had enough strength to listen. He fell back upon the pillows with a sigh, feeling dizzy. Then he felt a familiar hand entwine itself around his. "Rest well, Luke," Joy whispered in his ear.

In celebration of the destruction of a corrupt organization, the rescue of several hundred people, the imprisonment of dangerous criminals and the acts of several brave heroes, a public ceremony was held before the palace. Banners were strung from house to house, flags waved from the towers, and, of course, banquets starring sandwiches, burgers, and un-poisoned cookies were set out. The people of the capital cheered as a parade of the rescued slaves were led to the palace. In the lead on colorfully-adorned horses were Joy, her parents, and Luke. A speech by the king was given to the rescued slaves, as well as promises to help them get back on their feet, while medals of honor and expensive awards were given to Joy's family and Luke. For the occasion Luke cast off his black and gray clothes forever and was given a slim suit of forest-green with gold trimmings. Joy in turn wore a shimmering dress of sky-blue and white and her hair up in a braid wound around her head like a crown. The king and queen placed the medals around Luke and Joy's necks, commending them for their actions and publicly declaring them heroes. As the cheers roared like thunder, Luke felt hot with embarrassment but wore a shy smile. It all felt like a dream.

I thought you did think of it xD I felt end of A New Hope vibes from the whole chapter.
It'll be bittersweet, for sure.
I was thinking more like the end of Return of the King or Prince Caspian, but you're right, this definitely has an end-of-Star-Wars feel to it at the moment. xD
And tomorrow's this topic's anniversary, what a coincidence. o.O

After the ceremony, there was a grand banquet in the palace that night. Everyone feasted on a filling eight course dinner, with the last course being a delicious dessert of cookies, not poisoned, of course. Joy and Luke could finally eat some cookies in peace. Everyone in the dinner hall ate, shared stories, and talked amongst themselves, and after the banquet everyone went home for the night. Luke, Joy, and Joy's parents were now on their way home.
"I thought you wouldn't like cookies anymore?" Joy asked. Luke was carrying a cloth bag full of cookies he had taken as leftovers from the banquet. "Not these cookies. These are simply divine!" Luke replied in a muffled voice as he munched on a cookie. Joy chuckled.
Joy asked another question. "So... what will you do now?" She asked Luke. "Hmm..." Luke replied. He thought about it for a long time. He wasn't sure what to say, or what to do. He was so puzzled.
"You could come and live with us?" Joy mentioned.
"Sure, why not?" Luke said, kind of nervously.
"What is it, Luke?" Joy asked.
"Well, there's been something I've been thinking about, but wasn't sure when to ask."
"Go ahead, don't be shy."
"I was wondering if maybe you and I..." Joy opened her eyes widely, wondering what he would ask. "... could do something together. You know, just you and me now that everything seems back to normal."
"You mean.. go out on a date?"
"Yeah?" Luke said nervously.
"Yes, I would love to go with you." Joy said as she gave him a big hug.
Luke's heart had never beat so fast before in his life. He had also almost dropped his bag of cookies. He felt relieved, and very happy. He hugged her back.
"So what do you wanna do tomorrow for our first date?" Asked Joy.
"Hmm, you and I have already visited a bunch of places it seems. Already went to a festival, and a theater, and a forest, and a restaurant."
"Maybe we can spend this one at home?"
"I like that idea." Luke replied. "Let's do that."
---
And so the two headed to Joy's house to hang out and rest. They had been on their biggest adventure of their lives, and now they found something they both desired more than anything else in the world.
