Essa stood at the entrance of the forest. Where are they? she thought worriedly. She knew the robot could take care of itself, but Con…Con was…different. He was reckless…arrogant… No, no they’ll be just fine.
“You know, standing there isn’t gonna bring them back any faster.”
Essa turned around to the speaker, previously referred to as “Ms. Sweetcrazy”.
“What’s your problem, huh? Are you just always this cynical?”
“Look kid, I was on my way to having a nice vacation, and then somebody messed something up!”
“Yeah, same as the rest of us! And nobody messed anything up, we flew threw a meteor storm.”
“Yeah? And who flew us through it? Why does it matter anyway? All that matters is that I’m not on BrickBook-5 relaxing on a nice, warm, sunny beach next to the ocean.”
“Well I’m sorry your majesty life doesn’t always go the way we want it to!”
“Why you little-“ her voice broke, Ms. Sweetcrazy was furious, “Do you know who I am?”
“Yeah, and the fact that you’re on the cover of a magazine doesn’t mean bricks to any of us!” Sweetcrazy grew madly enraged, stomping towards Essa with her hand raised, ready to teach this child some manners. Essa realized this and backed away slowly. Maybe I took this too far, she thought. Sweetcrazy brought her arm down in a swinging blow that cut across Essa’s helmet as Essa fell to the ground. The glass visor of Essa’s helmet cracked. Sweetcrazy raised her arm for another blow…
But it never came. Essa opened her eyes to see Sweetcrazy’s hand gripped by one of metal. Ms. Sweetcrazy struggled madly, screaming at the newcomer. It was N-81 who held her squirming arm.
“Let go of me!” Sweetcrazy grunted, striking N-81’s hull with her free hand. N-81 complied, releasing her. She tossed a glare that drove fear into Essa. “You just consider yourself lucky your pet showed up!” She spat.
I will, Essa thought bitterly. N-81 extended his hand down to her.
“Are you alright?”
“Fine,” she said, taking hold of his metal hand and allowing him to gently help her to her feet. “Thanks.”
N-81 cocked his head to the side. “It is my duty to protect all passengers of my vessel. No thanks is necessary.”
“Whatever…where’s Con?“
Her answered was answered when she heard Con’s voice cry out of the forest.
“Nate! Where did you go? I can’t drag all this myself!”
“Affirmative!” N-81 disappeared into the woods, then, minutes later, emerged with Con, dragging a makeshift wooden sled tied together with vines. Upon the sled sat the biggest assortment of logs she had ever seen.
N-81 hadn’t understood why the passenger had struck the other, but he intervened before things got too violent. He would have felt proud if he could. Con, however was much more worried when he saw Essa’s cracked helmet. N-81 wasn’t sure why.
“Essa!” Con cried, running over to her, looking over he cracked helmet. “Nate, can you fix this?”
“I don’t see why that would be necessary, Con, the atmosphere on this planet is perfectly breathable.” Con and everyone else just stared at N-81 incredulously. “What? Was it something I said?”
“Nate…”
“Yes?”
“Did we not just have a conversation about withholding important information until the last second?”
“It’s fine, honestly,” interjected Essa, “I hadn’t even noticed the crack.”
“Um, I hate to break up the party here, but are you guys gonna do something with all that wood or what?” Sweetcrazy haughtily inquired.
