With an hour of practice, her kick had definitely improved. I was situated in my customary position, fielding shots. I easily deflected one. “Better.”

She settled the ball, and backed up. I mentally sighed, that was a lesson all for another day.
Her next one was flawless. Well, at least, sort of. Close enough. I gave her a thumbs-up and headed for a big water barrel somebody had dropped off here.
I glanced around. Things had started to accumulate. There were a few resident soccer balls, a stack of cones in the corner, and of course some discarded sneakers that I would have to throw in lost and found sometime.
Celeste trotted over. “Thanks.”
I glanced at her. She appeared to have meant it. I grabbed a used cup and filled it up. “Why are you so nice all of a sudden?”
She shrugged, a little guiltily. “Mateo told me to give me a shot.”
I downed my water. “He blackmailing you too?”
“Do you think I would’ve otherwise?” She snorted. “You’ve been a complete jerk.”
“Yes.” I agreed hesitantly.
“But you know your stuff.” She acknowledged with a nod.
I remained silent. That little compliment meant so much more to me than it should.
That afternoon I choked on a bag of trail mix due to seeing the financial report from the Steakhouse. There had been a constant stream of people ever since the discovery had been made that was my home board, and also home to my personal gang of gamers.
I had been expecting to have made a little more, but I was unprepared for the sum I was confronted with. It was big.
It looked much smaller when I split it among all the employees, but it still left me a fair chunk.
I glanced at my bank account. I had some in there. I wasn’t rich, but at least I wasn’t broke.
By the way, my bank was in New York. Down here we keep money in an old boot.
