It's possibly the most well known Japanese word in the world behind "konnichiwa" and "Sayounara"
Think about how it was used in the earlier sentence, and how it was translated.
I didn't know it was Japanese.
The other words in the earlier sentence were foreign too.
But the sentence was translated T_T

I didn't realize that the translation was "this is foolish." At the time I thought you meant that speaking in a foreign language was foolish.

Well that would be a really bad thing to say, given I'm bilingual and going through the effort to try to learn a third language
I mean... it's actually the opposite of foolish. Increasing your understanding of another group of people can only end in good things.

The only downside of being bilingual is when your grandmother comes from a... ahem, troubled country, she tends to listen to said troubled country's propaganda-charged news station. So uh, when she listens to said propaganda-filled news, and cheers for the government... one ends up understanding every word of it and being somewhat mortified T_T
