Anyone remember this game? Does anyone also know what Lego Designer sets are featured in this game and the sequel? Also, you can talk about tips and tricks and levels you were stuck on when playing this game.
I managed to find what a few of them were based on by cross-referencing the models from the game and a list of all LEGO Creator sets. It wasn't that hard to narrow down since World Builder was made pretty early in Creator's life (Early 2000s). Here's what I found:
I'm willing to bet that the Dune Buggy is one of the micro-models from Micro Wheels (4096). While I can't find any proof of this, it seems likely. The set contained mostly yellow, grey, and transparent pieces, which is prominently featured on the Dune Buggy. Many of the pieces on the Dune Buggy are similar to those shown in Micro Wheels, including the interesting (at the time, anyway) addition of transparent yellow 1x1 squares. The set itself had instructions for 40 different models, but I can't find any .pdf of the manual anywhere, and the only models shown off on the box are a Dump Truck and a Bulldozer. The final reason I say this is because there's also a Bulldozer and a Dump Truck in World Builder, and they match up perfectly to the one shown on Micro Wheels (4096).
The best news about that find is that we can find the year that the sets we're looking for were released in. Creator began in 2001, and Micro Wheels was released in 2003. Any set after that probably wasn't used in the game, or was used in World Builder 2. The reason I say this is that it's unlikely that LEGO would use an older, likely discontinued, set in their game because you wouldn't be able to sell it anymore. No kid's gonna be happy when they try to pick up "Small Green Frog" set they found in World Builder only to discover that it's no longer available. It's possible 2004 sets could be included, but it's unlikely imo.
I've got more I've found but the character limit here is fairly small, so I'll make another post detailing the Defender and Treebot.
At first, I was convinced that the Defender and Treebot were a similar situation to the Dune Buggy, Dump Truck, and Bulldozer since there's a set released in 2003 called Mini Robots (4097), so that seemed like a cinch until I realized that there were no blue parts in that set. Either it's not from there, or it's a recolor of one of the 32 mini-models you can make with that set.
However, I did find another set that I think fits much better: Robobots (4099-1). This set features more robots (49 different models to make!) and all of them are blue. All of them use the 2x3 dark blue slopes seen on Defender's feet, as well as the now-common light blue color and transparent orange for accent. Once again, I'm willing to bet that Defender is one of those 49 possible models. In fact, I'm fairly certain that i own this set, as I totally remember the big blue monkey-armed robot shown on the fron of the instruction manual. I'll check through my manuals tonight to see if I still have it, though it's doubtful.
At this point, there's a pretty obvious pattern of the World Builder models being from those 2003 multi-builds, and that trend continues with the Buggy and the Forklift. There's another 2003 set called Maximum Wheels (4100-1) that features 35 primarily red builds. The forklift and buggy are both red, and both use the wheels seen in 4100-1. Once again I have no proof, but I'm almost certain that they come from that set.
Last ones I found were the enemies. All of the enemy creatures can be seen in the 2003 set (what a shocker) Wild Collection (4101-1), which I COULD find a manual for online. Every enemy in the game (Crab, Blue Crab, Alligator, Scorpion, T-Rex, and Shark) is a build from that set.
There are still a few I could find, like the Speedboat, but I'm pretty sure some stuff like the duck and the marina and stuff are just generic builds.
However, I'd say the case is solved! Most of the models seen in LEGO World Builder come from the 2003 multi-build sets, almost certainly to promote the products.
