Rogue One introduced the Guardians of the Whills, and although they're awesome in and of themselves, one might ask if there was additional reasoning for their inclusion. Why not have Chirrut and Baze be members of the Church of the Force, like Lor San Tekka?
It seems reasonable to assume that when a major term like the Whills is introduced, it's not just for fun. They're going somewhere with this.
Which makes me wonder, what if the Knights of Ren are what became of the Guardians of the Whills? No one else is mentioned by name, but Chirrut alludes to other members. And that begs the question: What happened to them?
Although he was once the most devout Guardian of them all, Baze was pretty disillusioned throughout the majority of Rogue One, and we never find out why. Perhaps under the oppression of the Empire, the other Guardians turned to the service of the Dark Side. What if Snoke was a Shaman of the Whills, who all the Guardians answered to, and he decided to go down a dark path that Baze and Chirrut would not?
I can't call this a proper theory because there's no solid evidence for it. But I think it'd be cool! Plus, there's always the fact that the Knights of Ren are basically evil-looking versions of the Guardians.

That's certainly an elaborate theory. I guess it is possible if they wanted to connect Rogue one with the new trilogy.
