Ooh, I love The Nightmare Before Christmas! So, I could give you a description right from the web, but that risks plagiarizing/copying, and besides, it's more fun to write one myself. I deeply apologize if I spoil anything for you, but you asked for what happened so I'll try my best. (Also, this is very detailed. So. )
First of all, it's a Tim Burton movie. Please keep that in mind. That said, though, there aren't many films of his I enjoy, but this one is one of my favorite Disney movies. Okay, so if you're a fan of holidays I'm a hyperactive holiday fan , you'll love this movie. The movie opens in Halloween Town on Halloween night. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King (basically a celebrity and expert scarer in Halloween Town) has just finished celebrating with all the citizens. However, as he walks away from the crowd for some peace and quiet, it's revealed that he actually doesn't enjoy Halloween that much. He longs for something more, something that's different from the year-after-year routine of Halloween. But Halloween is the only holiday the townspeople have ever known, so Jack knows no one will understand how he feels. Meanwhile, a rag doll named Sally is watching him. She secretly has feelings for Jack, and understands how he feels, but thinks he will never notice her. She's a bit of an outcast from the crowd, wise beyond her years and somewhat imprisoned by Dr. Finkelstein, the monstrous (literally, I'm not being rude here ) and eccentric scientist who created her. Jack's been walking through the woods all night, when he stumbles upon "someplace new." A circle of trees in the forest, each one bearing a door that leads to the holiday worlds. He's interested by all of them, but the one that catches his eye the most is a shiny door in the shape of a Christmas tree. He curiously opens it, only to be sucked inside to Christmas Town, a bright and jolly place unlike anything he's ever seen. Jack is amazed by all the new things he discovers in the world of Christmas, and immediately wishes to bring this new holiday back to the citizens of Halloween Town. The following day, Jack arrives back in Halloween Town with lots of toys, stockings, and other things he has collected from Christmas Town for research. The townspeople are just as eager to hear about the holiday as he is to tell it, and he quickly calls a town meeting. However, after a vivid explanation of the joy of Christmas and several of the citizens' attempts to Halloween-ize it all, Jack realizes they don't quite understand his point. He decides to "give them what they want" and goes along with their ideas, making Christmas Town out to be a scary place and Santa Claus to be a powerful, evil ruler of the land. The townspeople cheer and declare their excitement for this wonderful new "Christmas" holiday. Jack sighs and realizes that they'll never truly understand "that special type of feeling in Christmas land..." Jack begins to spend all his time on research for his newly-found obsession, trying desperately to grasp the meaning of Christmas. He locks himself in his house and goes into a day-and-night flurry of Christmas research. Sally looks on, worried about her friend and what he might be planning. Soon Jack discovers that the simplest way to take over Christmas is, quite literally, for him to take the place of Santa Claus. He declares, "This year, Christmas will be ours!" much to the citizens' delight. Sally alone begins to fear that his vision may be disastrous. Jack assigns all the excited citizens a job to help prepare for Christmas. He calls for a trio of mischievous trick-or-treaters, Lock, Shock, and Barrel, to capture Santa and bring him back to Halloween Town. After a failed try or two, they succeed, and after Jack has explained to Santa that he gets a vacation from delivering presents this year, the trio departs with him. Completely against Jack's wishes, they take Santa to the lair of their villainous boss, Oogie Boogie. The bogeyman merely laughs at Santa and decides to keep him around for some fun. On Christmas Eve, Jack is preparing to take off in his sleigh, along with reindeer he's constructed and all the horrific gifts the townspeople have made for the children. Sally thinks fast and pours fog juice into the town's fountain, producing so much fog that Jack can't see to fly his sleigh. The citizens and Jack are all very disappointed, while Sally is relieved, thinking she's saved them from a disaster. But at this moment, Jack notices the glowing red nose of his ghostly dog, Zero. Ordering Zero to the front of the team, Jack takes off after all, his dog's nose lighting the way. As all the citizens cheer, Sally is distraught, still feeling as though things will go wrong. Meanwhile, Jack is off delivering presents (evil wreaths, Christmas-tree-eating-snakes, etc.) to the children of the world. Unsurprisingly, the people are a bit upset and terrified of the gifts, while Jack beams and continues to say "you're welcome." People believe Jack is an impostor imitating Santa, and they decide to put a stop to it. His sleigh is shot down, and the citizens of Halloween Town begin to mourn, believing Jack couldn't have survived. The children are all very sad too, as the real Santa has not been found, and Christmas must be "cancelled this year." Jack, having landed in a cemetery and survived the crash, is awoken by Zero. He sees his sleigh in flames around him and becomes very sad and ashamed of what he's done. Although his heart was in the right place, things had gone terribly wrong. But in realizing his failure, Jack also realizes that he is the king of Halloween, and that's where he belongs. Proudly proclaiming, "I am the Pumpkin King!" he rushes back to Halloween Town to set things right. Meanwhile, Sally is attempting to save Santa from Oogie Boogie, but in the process is also captured by him. Jack sneaks into the lair and frees them both, then angrily confronts Oogie Boogie. The two of them fight for a while before Jack defeats Oogie once and for all. Jack apologizes to Santa Claus, who reprimands him, just before disappearing off to set Christmas right. Jack and Sally are rescued and taken back to Halloween Town, where everyone rejoices to see them alive. Santa Claus flies past in the sky, wishing them a Happy Halloween and making it snow to show that Jack is forgiven. Jack wishes him a Merry Christmas in return. The townspeople are all very confused at the snow, but before long begin happily playing in it. Sally slips away from the crowd, as she often does, and Jack follows her out to the snowy hill by the graveyard. He admits that he too does have feelings for her, and the two of them agree that they're "simply meant to be" as the movie ends.
