The Makuta were gods among mortals. As the Toa came and went, the Makuta stayed, the Antidermis Pool depleted and gone.
Then a spring formed on Destral. At first, the great discoverer, Teridax himself, thought one of his lessers had been injured, but the pool steadily grew. New Makuta crawled out of the pool, confused by what was going on. Antroz was delighted, a fresh brood to teach, with hope, he could find an apprentice. His delight dwindled, they were all females, and not warriors like Gorast or Insorz. They were frail and spindly and ill.
Gorast was delighted at the fresh wave of women, after all, the amount of femme makuta was small, in comparison to their male bretheren. She took it upon herself to meet each and every one of them. The first one, a sickly green female, with two crescent shaped horns on her head, slithered out. Instead of legs she had one long, thick snake trunk, the scales transforming to smooth skin, covered by golden armor. Her nails were long, more like talons, as she crawled out of the pool. Her innocent, naive eyes were lime green, with a twinge of black swirling around. Everywhere she crawled, the local flora and smallest of the fauna withered away to dust. She however held a proud regal nature, despite her hideous lower half. Her name, as Gorast asked, was Toxica.
The fifth of them was named Crystalia, as she immediately shouted upon flying out of the pool. She had smooth white armor, with a light blue trim, and a long braid of "hair", two small horns forming from her foreheads corners. She was unnaturally tall, and very thin. She had heels, as was a common trend among the new brood. Her trapezoid eyes were light, translucent blue, and sinisterly glaring at Gorast often. Her first action was to create a wall of ice, which grew spikes, and she launched at Chirox and Mutran.
Gorast decided Crystalia was her favorite.
Astrona was not Gorast's favorite. She came right after Crystalia, rising slowly yet steadily. Astrona's first reaction was to sneer. Unlike her cohorts, Astrona seemed relatively armored, not unhealthily thin or tall. She had clawed feet, and a rahkshi face, two long braids of hair, her black and silver/gray armor gleamed. She ran up to one of the Rahi lurking nearby and began to coddle it.
Gorast was pleased by the next one though. She was formed from Antidermis, yes, but the puddle of Antidermis tredged to a nearby tree, assimilating the local flora to form her body. She had green armor, with a golden trim, her eyes dark like soil and shifting. "The name is Zenila, darling." She had purred, forming a whip out of a vine.
And many more Makuta
One that Gorast did notice, was a relatively short one. She was taller than a Turaga, but shorter than a Toa. She had two ridiculously large hands, the fingertips bladed and the size of spears. She did not give herself a name, but she merely sat down and followed Toxica around loyally.
Gorast did not like the runt. And she made sure the runt knew it. Toxica affectionately referred to the runt as "Selene", which the runt eagerly accepted.
This is not the story of Gorast though. Nor is this the story of Toxica. This is the story of Selene, and her journey to become the Shadow Queen.
~oOo~
Selene walked into the convocation hall with Toxica and another Makuta, by the name of Helios. Helios had red and orange armor, with streaks of gold, and he was faintly reptilian, with a horn jutting from his forehead. Selene on the other hand had blue and black armor, with silver highlights. Her large fingers were holding her up, as it was faster than using her legs.
Toxica slithered around, giggling. "Did you see Crystalia's face when I broke her Ice sculpture?!" She snorted, cackling. Selene smiled softly, as Helios chuckled. "It was pretty amusing to see her face. But did you see her face when I melted her ice palace's prototype?"
"That was amusing." Selene murmured, as Toxica began guffawing. Her special ability wasn't that interesting. Toxica could create and control toxins and poisons with ease, Helios could transmute his body into sludge and control fire and heat. Selene could turn into diamond, which wasn't all that. Most Makuta, if they had a physical ability such as transmuting their bodies, had an additional special ability. Her secondary seemed to be able to control air and earth. 'Weird combo.' Selene thought.
"Why do you think the convocation was called?" Selene asked, Helios shrugged. "Well, ever since we all sprung out of the fountain, there's been such a larger amount of us. He might be assigning us new roles or something." Helios was one of the few males spawned from the pool, but not the only. He spawned the same time as Selene, and that made them think that Helios took most of the matter, which was why Selene was so short.
"It would make sense." Selene conceded, Toxica frowning.
"I hope I get a big island, I don't want part of a continent." She muttered. "And a small island wouldn't be fun!" Selene smiled at Toxica, who whipped around, slamming her tail into a nearby column, the column shattering into fractals.
"Perhaps, Toxica. Perhaps."
The convocation hall was mostly empty, to their shock. Teridax was of course, seated upon his grand throne, while Lohraz and Antroz were discussing military tactics a few feet away. Septerion was present, his seven heads looking in a different location. Selene walked to her seat, between Helios and Toxica. Toxica's "sister" of sorts, Jellica, sat next to Toxica.
The convocation hall slowly gained more inhabitants over the course of the next twenty minutes. The last to arrive was Makuta Inharax, who had an insane gleam in his eye, more-so than usual, and just before him was Selene's least favorite Makuta: Makaria and Melinoe. Two Makuta, twins and always together.
Teridax stood up with the Kraahkan proudly worn on his face. "Attention my brothers!" He began loudly. Upon several glares he added, "And sisters." He added as an addendum. "We have recently had a spike in our numbers! Our numbers went from 100 to 321! This is great news, but we must give our new family a job, yes?" He asked.
"Which is why I have constructed this list! Come to my throne, and I shall assign you a new job. Any whom wish to digress with their role may petition!" He ordered, and began to list off several names and new titles.
"Toxica! Maiden of the Toxic Meadows, and Makuta of Aryon-Nui! Mistress of the Poison Gulfs!" He suddenly shouted.
"Jellica! Queen of the Seas, and Makuta of Mahri-Nui! Lady of the Protodermis Sea!" Jellica roared with approval, her friends also applauding.
"Makaria! Lady of the Void and Chief Assassin! Melinoe, Lady of the Night and Head Spy!" Of course the twins would work together. The twins squealed and ran off, Makaria brandishing her scythe.
"Selene! Makuta of Zeyla-Nui, Empress of the Earth and Duchess of the Skies!" Selene paused, ignoring the cheers of Toxica and Helios.
"Helios, Lord of the Ancestral Plains! Makuta of Zeylo-Nui!"
And with that, Selene collapsed.
~oOo~
Selene stirred, she could not believe it. She was given ZEYLA-NUI with HELIOS? "Welcome back, sleeping beauty." A low voice chuckled. She saw Helios sitting next to her, with a book in hand. "Since we are so close, we should use Zeyle-Nui as our base. It's small enough nobody would settle there, and it acts as a bridge between the two islands." Helios began.
"Yeah." Selene murmured. "What does it mean by Lord of the Ancestral Plains?" Selene asked.
"I am the lord over all spiritual affairs. I've gained new powers, Selene. I can use Soul Magic." Selene gasped at this. Magic was something most Makuta were incapable of utilizing, Soul Magic was extremely rare for even Sorcerers! "Also, you didn't hear your third title, did you, Selene?"
"No..? There was a third title..?"
"Yup. The Arcane Maiden." Selene's eyes widened. "Why would I have been chosen as the new Arcane Maiden?" Selene asked harshly. The Arcane Maiden was chosen by Mata Nui as soon as the current one was to die, and they were one of the strongest magicians.
Selene couldn't perform magic! That must've been a mistake! Besides, the Arcane Maiden was always a member of the High Council, or an affiliate of theirs! She was no mage, she wasn't even a sorceress! Why would she have been chosen?!
"Yup. So, my queen," Helios did an exaggerated bow. "Shall we depart to Zeyle-Nui?" He snickered, bowing lowly once again, before carrying Selene out, and to a ship.
"Congratulations, Selene!" Toxica shouted, Jellica whooping with joy. "My best friend is the Arcane Maiden.." Toxica murmured.
"Your sister is the Queen of the Ocean." Jellica grunted out, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes yes, that's nice Jellica. But she's the Arcane Maiden.." Jellica murmured, awe in her voice. Jellica let out a noise of exasperation, turning away to talk with Zenila, who had been given the title of the Botanical Maiden, Makuta of Arshen-Nui, which was near the equator. Zenila was ranting over how exhilarated she felt.
Selene had a bad feeling about this all.
Then a spring formed on Destral. At first, the great discoverer, Teridax himself, thought one of his lessers had been injured, but the pool steadily grew.
