Welp, as of sometime in late February, I have been in this community for 5 years (well, over 5 years now since it's currently July) and I must say that it's been great getting to know all of you since you all are such an awesome community compared to most of the online "communities" out there. I must also say I regret not getting to know a lot of the 99% of users we lost since the closure of the message boards (we dropped from way over 40,000 to just over 300), but I guess that's life.
*The song "Soft Light" from Super Paper Mario begins playing in the background.*
Anyways, in the time since the closure of the boards was announced, I've come to realize something: This community may have come together because of the LEGO Message Boards, but as long as we love this community and care for it, we can not only survive, but thrive in any corner of cyberspace for a very long time to come for the purist of hearts are capable of forming adamantine bonds that can withstand anything. I mean, look at LEGO Universe for example: Fans groups have been working reviving it since nearly the day that it was shut down. Look it Bionicle: It's been gone for over 7 years and yet it's still very popular. Look at Chima, or Rock Raiders, or just about anything else LEGO has "shut down": They've all continued in the hearts of fans because of love; Nothing built can last forever, so build it with love to stand the test of time.
Sadly, that's something LEGO has not seem to realize and they have taken all for granted...

Congratulations on 5 years kllyann!!
The heart holds the things we love most, even when they no longer exist.
As for LEGO shutting down discontinued themes, there are probably lots of reasons why it happens. Of course we won't know, but if I had to guess what those reasons are, it's probably because of time. Each new wave of kids who gets introduced to the LEGO toy won't have time to explore how Bionicle or Chima began, so LEGO has to create new themes that they can claim as their childhood that they followed up on, just like how my childhood was with LEGO Agents, Mars Mission, Kim Possible, and Codename: Kids Next Door. I added those last two in because it doesn't just apply to LEGO, but other brands like Disney Channel and Cartoon Network respectively, and all of those franchises have been discontinued.
I don't think it's that LEGO doesn't love their themes anymore. It's just that LEGO has to keep up with the present and while they would love to keep their themes running, they don't have the resources available, and when LEGO brought back Bionicle, of course many fans didn't like that LEGO tried to cater to the younger generation and not the older generation, but that's because LEGO was bringing back a theme that newer LEGO Fans will never ever be able catch up on, which means they have to rush the beginning. I think LEGO ended Bionicle officially because they know they can't keep up to date with what the older fans would like to have while catering to the younger generation who just started their LEGO childhood.
I believe LEGO trusts us, the hardcore LEGO fans of discontinued themes, to keep them running. They know we love it just as much as LEGO does, but LEGO, as a toy company with a desire to grow, can't hold everything. They love the community of teenagers who kept Bionicle going, they love the adults who kept Classic Space going, and they love the newer kids who love Nexo Knights and Ninjago and will probably keep it going after LEGO discontinues them (at some point in time, hopefully not soon. ). It's our job as LEGO fans to build the things we love and, referring back to the second sentence of this post, keep building them even when they no longer exist.
As for LEGO Universe and the LMBs, that's another story that I don't think I want to get into, at least not in this topic.
