Hundreds of Eagles gather in a deserted factory built by the Crawler Empire before its fall. As well as civilians, they include several officials and military commanders. Any Republic of the Claw citizens who wish to enter are also allowed in. Eagle Councillor Ewinus flies up to a newly erected podium, behind which hangs the banner of the Eagle Tribe.
“Eagles, guests, friends, and occupants of this fair land! Thank you ever so much for attending this gathering. I have summoned you here to discuss an urgent matter that has arisen; the future of our tribe is in jeopardy!”
Many Eagles look at each other and a few start murmuring.
“We have been sheltered for the past few months; since our friends and allies, the Republic of the Claw; made peace with the Bears, there has been no imminent danger to us. But no more! New tribes have come from the north; they have frozen the Gorilla Forest, invaded our allies, the Crocodiles, and even conquered the shared town of Casablanche!”
There is widespread whispering and nervous glances.
“When our friend and ally, King Crogar, was frozen; when his army was taken away in blocks of ice and his people forced to flee from their homes, where were we?
We were safely here in the Eagle Spire, doing precisely nothing.”
Many Eagles look at each other, shocked expressions on their faces.
“When Casablanche was invaded and our own citizens, people who grew up with us and just happened to be living further west, were frozen, what did we do to help them?
Precisely nothing.”
Ewinus turns and starts pacing, staring passionately into the crowd.
“We have been complacent too long. Whilst we have been sitting here comfortably, letting others defend us, our friends and even members of our own species have paid the price for our foolishness! Will history tell that we, the Eagles, Sons and Daughters of the Sky, sat here and cowered while our own citizens were invaded?”
The Eagles seem to have been worked up into a frenzy, muttering angrily and shifting restlessly.
“There is one cause for this; one cause for many other problems. The monarch who has SAT HERE AND DONE NOTHING! When Ravens stormed our home, what did he do? He stood about indecisively and failed to give any orders! His weak leadership meant that we were unprepared; many innocent Eagles died and he was shot because he didn’t mobilise our forces to stop the invaders and allowed them right in! We were at their mercy until King Bliston flew in and saved us! Since recovering, what has he done? Has he done anything since resuming leadership? Where has he when the Crocodiles needed us most? What did he do when their distress signal came? NOTHING. What did he do when Casablanche fell? NOTHING!”
By now, many Eagles are nodding and the last few words spark shouts of agreement.
“I say it now, for all to hear: King Eeran has neglected his duties, and is UNWORTHY OF THE OFFICE HE HOLDS!”
Widespread cheering goes up at this; it seems most of those present, at least a third of the Eagle Tribe and closer to half, have been persuaded; Ewinus’ message has taken root in their minds, and the word will soon spread.
Republican scorpions send a radio message about this to the Consuls and Praetors meeting with the Wolves.
With the meeting now finished, the Consuls and Praetors return here in the Fire Sting jet, going back to their caverns, while having scorpions observe the actions of the eagles above.
