So it's not older, it's just similar to something that's older. Either way, I just don't understand and am very tired of hearing my friends say they're not allowed to read HP. I have to do a persuasive essay for school and I actually chose that topic to do it on. Maybe that'll finally help me get all my thoughts out.
Yeah! The stories are exactly the same. It's all Greek and Roman Mythology. The very same stories have been around for years. My Dad used to watch Jason and the Argonauts as a kid. Jason goes through the same things Percy does. My dad can pronounce all the Greek god's names because of the TV show. I suppose that is why so many parents let their children read the PJ books and not HP.
HP doesn't have roots that go that far back. However, HP is a lot darker than the original PJ series. Not only that, it does rely on magic a lot more. The only real magical things in PJ are a few weapons and pieces of clothing. Nearly everything in HP is magical... the Anglier, cabinets, pieces of wood, The Burrow and Hogwarts.
What are the main points of your essay? Your thesis? I'm interested to see how you argue your point.
I suppose that's true, but it all comes down to judging things without knowing enough about them. "Don't judge a book by its cover."
The main points I touched on were the harmless roots of the "magic words," Rowling's religious views, and the Christian themes explored in the series. I didn't go super in-depth and it was a fairly simple 5-paragraph essay, but I think I did a pretty good job. It hasn't been graded yet, though.

Oh yeah, I think it's just a USA thing... to judge before actually knowing. One particular book comes to mind, not that I could name it here. I'm sure it was universally banned in the USA, though I don't understand why. I've read it about ten times and would never consider it to be controversial.
I guess some people take things like magical schools and swear words too seriously. But maybe Australians are too lax, I don't know.
There are more important things to worry about than what is written in the pages of a fictional book. Personally, I would rather a child read anything than not read at all. Obviously LEGO doesn't have a problem, because the Weasley's swear throughout the entire HP series. That brings me back to it being a USA thing.

I don't know about specific countries, but people on the Internet definitely have issues with that. Like saying a movie is a ripoff before it even comes out. Some people are just really dumb like that.
Some people, yes. Americans in general, definitely not. (I know you didn't say that in that specific paragraph, but I just wanted to make that clear.) Many Americans (and probably other people too, especially with how connected we all are these days) swear way too much and don't even think twice about it. They just think it's "cool" or something.
I wasn't even thinking about the language, but that is definitely an issue for many people that don't want their children to know those words. Because of that, I can definitely see a parent not letting their kid read HP at least until a certain age, it's when they ban it altogether that gets on my nerves. And maybe that's why the LEGO HP games don't use real dialogue! Jk, they don't swear that much, especially not in the movies. Even in the books, there are only a couple instances that really stand out.

I agree about the swearing thing. I think some people haven't been taught how to express themselves in a polite way, so they just throw out words the words they know. However, I would consider the swear words in HP to be British slang, rather than offensive terms. I say British because Aussies and Kiwis tend to borrow said terms.
In saying that, I don't believe any parent would take notice of Ron's language in the books. He often swears in the films, and those are rated PG in Australia. I would argue and say that Ron swears a lot. At least most people would consider it swearing. JKR does gloss over some of the more offensive lines by saying that 'Ron said something that would get him a months detention' or something along those lines. He swears at least three times in the first film.
Heh! I think the games were too cheap to hire voice talent.

Yeah, some of the words are considered offensive here as well, though.
Mostly just, oh, well I guess I can't say it because it's considered profane in other countries, but you know that phrase he famously says quite a bit that's kinda sorta profane at least in Britain but not really anywhere else? Yeah, he says that a lot, but he almost never says anything else bad in the books, and I'm not sure if he ever does in the movies.
Well, that was before they started using dialogue from the movies in the LEGO games like they did with LotR and Jurassic World.

Yes, I know the phrase you mean. I don't think it's classified as offensive in the UK. At least, not by my UK relatives. Thought it may have been offensive in the USA though. Oh and there is that one time Mrs Weasley swears. Pretty sure most people don't like that one.
IMO: the games were better without voice talents. Especially when you consider the bore of an actor they hired for LEGO Worlds.

It's not here. At least the first word isn't. Yeah, but that's an awesome scene, though.
Yeah, the classic grunts and laughs will always hold a special place in my heart, but I like having dialogue from the movies in the games as well. In my opinion, a mix of both would be best, with no new dialogue recorded.
