Epilogue- 2
As she stepped back, Hithrol cleared his throat. “I suppose this means it’s time to begin. Korin and Cloventail, I believe you asked to go first.”
Korin nodded. “Aye.” They stepped up to the pyre. “Ye all know we’re not much fer words. I’ve never thought of meself as some great speaker or anythin’, and Cloventail’s the same way. But we’ll try. Skrag, ye were almost like a brother to me. I wish I could’ve done more fer ye.”
Cloventail nodded with his words, adding only, “We’ll keep the forge lit for you, and for Zargan.”
Isabel stepped forward next. “You and Zargan were the spark that lit the fire. Without you, I might never have overthrown my father and saved my city. If I did, it would have taken much longer. Shadowwrath and I, and the whole city, owe so much to you. I don’t know where I’ll go next, but I swear it will honor your memory and the memories of all the other gladiators and everyone else in the City.”
“I’ll go now,” said Legolie. “I have some words of my own.” Slowly, she approached the pyre and placed a hand on it. “I can’t pretend that I knew you as well as anyone else here, but I did know you, and I’m proud to say it. I understand that you may have saved my life not long ago. Know that I will never forget that. Not ever.” When she stepped away, her eyes were wet with tears.
Hithrol felt his own eyes beginning to moisten as he stepped forward, Olifin at his side. The black dragon spoke first. “I remember how afraid I was when Morath stole Hithrol’s body. He was my oldest friend, and I didn’t know if I’d ever see him again. You saved him. I don’t know if I ever properly thanked you for that. So thank you. I think I understand a little of what you went through when Zargan was smashed. If it was anything like what I felt when I almost lost Hithrol, I would not have wished that pain upon anyone, let alone you. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you overcome it.”
“The day I met you,” began Hithrol, “Was the day that set me on the course that has led me to where I am today. I was chasing after Zargan, intent on smashing him, but you stepped in the way. You saved this dragon you had never met. I’m not sure what compelled you to do it, but I’m glad you did. If you hadn’t, I would have smashed an innocent person, someone who, under better circumstances, could have- and, fortunately for both of us, did- become a good friend. I never would have met you either, or Olifin, or any of these people who I am proud to call my friends, even my family. I never would have known my sister was alive. Like all of us here, I owe you a great debt, even if I didn’t realize it at the time.” When he stepped away, he, too, found himself unable to hold back the tears. Leaning against Olifin, he wept for his fallen friend.

Epilogue- 3
Terra motioned for Skirj to take his turn, and the goblin nodded his assent as he stepped forward. “You were as good a brother as I could have wished for, especially given the way I treated you when we were young. If I could take that back, I would, but I can’t. There’s not much to say other than what I told you that night in the desert, but know that I am sorry for everything. It means the world that you forgave me. You owed me nothing, and I owed you everything, and you treated me with compassion, as your brother. I was never able to repay you for that, and maybe that is what I regret beyond all else.” He paused, and when he started again his tone was suddenly angry. “No. There is one thing that I regret more. I regret that I couldn’t help you in those mountains, whatever happened there. I regret that I couldn’t be there to save you. I should have saved you! I should have!” Skirj fell against the pyre and wrapped his arms around Skrag’s form, almost dragging him off.
It took the combined strengths of Hithrol, Korin, and Isabel to pull him away. Wiping his own tears away, Hithrol grabbed the goblin by his shoulders and looked him in the eye. “It’s okay, Skirj. You had duties at the Towers. There was much going on there, too. We can’t change the past, only learn from it.”
Skirj only whispered, “I could have, once.” He stalked away into the trees, a faint orange glow radiating from his skin. Hithrol did not follow.
Once Skrag had been rearranged and moved back to the center of the pyre, Terra and Raini stepped forward. “You and Zargan were two of the greatest friends I ever had, here or anywhere else,” started Raini. “If Terra and I had known what was going to happen, we never would have left to find the Falkrions. Even if we couldn’t have stopped it, we could at least have been there for you, and maybe that would have made the difference.”
Raini stepped away for Terra to take her turn, but the mermian shook her head. “What I have to say, I want to say to him alone. I would appreciate it if you would all step away for a minute. You, too, Raini. It’s nothing personal, I just . . . need a little privacy.”

Epilogue- 4
Once they had all done as she said, Terra stepped up to the pyre. “I don’t know if you can hear me. From what Hithrol said about the Shadows, I’m guessing not. But if you can, please listen.” A momentary pause. “The Falkrions are doing well. They’re looking for a good place to settle right now. I’m sure they’ll find somewhere, in the mountains or the forest or something. Oh, I wish you could see them. They’re beautiful, every last one of them. I can’t describe it. I just wish I could have shown you.” She had to pause again to regain her composure. A few tears rolled down her cheeks. “Anyway, um, that’s not really what I need to tell you. I love you, Skrag. Loved you. I know you felt the same, but we never said it, so I just thought I had to. I wish I had before. And I wish- I know, another wish, but please just bear with me- that it had worked out. Before the war, we weren’t ready, and then I left, and then you left, and now this. Goodbye, Skrag. I’ll never forget you.” Her vision obscured by flowing tears, she stepped away and motioned for the others to return.
They talked for a little while, as they waited for the sun to set, about Skrag, and the future, and everything. Hithrol and Olifin, with some occasional input from Korin and Cloventail, explained their plans for the Riders. The tower would be complete soon, and when that was done they would add statues of those they had lost- Skrag and Zargan and all the others. Legolie talked about her own intentions to honor Link. That, at least, seemed to make her smile, if only a little. Terra and Raini discussed the future of the Falkrions, and where they might be able to live. Isabel didn’t have much to say, but they all gave suggestions as to what she might do and where she might go next. Just before sunset, Hithrol, from the corner of his eye, saw Skirj return, but the goblin stayed far away from the rest of them and no one seemed interested in inviting him to join the group.
At last, the time was right. Olifin and Cloventail knelt on either side of the pyre, and with thin plumes of flame, careful not to destroy it, lit the fire. It blazed red and gold, and in the center green, the mark of the Dragonsbane. The nine of them stood in silence, watching as the roaring flames devoured the remains of the half-breed, smoke pouring into the inky black sky.

An Alternate Reality (What if?)
Skrag’s father, Skar, had a good fried among the tribe, one who knew about his human wife and half-breed child. On the night Skrag’s parents were smashed she tried to warn them, but did not arrive in time. Here is what would have happened if she did.
Skrag’s parents managed to escape with their infant son, living on the road for many years, finding work where they could and barely getting by. Because Skrag was not there to save him, Zargan was smashed by Hithrol. Still hungry for revenge, Hithrol went on to find Olifin’s brood mother before Kelrin’s men, smashing her and destroying the eggs. When Jayden and Kelrin’s men arrived, there were no eggs for them to steal- except for Olifin’s. Jayden took it for himself and later went on to found the Dragon Riders. Hithrol became a Dragon-Slayer.
When Skrag was around seventeen, his family was ambushed by slavers. Skar was smashed, and Skrag and his mother, Andidrast, were captured and put in the same boat as Baj and Elisa. Skrag became close friends with the two of them in the Arena. Skrag’s mother was smashed in a fight with Zelfern, but Skrag got his revenge by smashing the half-Vampyre in a separate fight. Soon after, the half-breed found a tunnel by which he could escape the Arena. Taking Baj and Elisa with him, he tried to leave, but Garfell confronted them. He smashed Baj and Elisa before Skrag was able to smash him. Skrag then fled through his escape tunnel. Without his influence, it took many more years for Isabel to overthrow Gormund and Edmond and destroy the Arena.
Kelrin’s invasion failed quickly due to having too few dragon riders. Marrzak and Alis were smashed by Hithrol in his attempt to wipe out all dragons. Morath fled with the Crown. Irya entered the Well instead of Ethan, and kept the power, preventing the shadows from being released. With her power, she smashed Morath, destroyed the Crown, and forced Hithrol to sail away before he smashed any more innocent dragons. She then separated the powers from herself, sealing them away where they could never be accessed.
Around the same time, Skrag arrived in the City by the Sea. There he met Terra, who had parted ways with Raini and never joined the Dragon Riders. She was in hiding from the Bandits because she had deserted them. The two of them planned to get married, but Terra was betrayed by a close friend. The Bandits came to smash her, and succeeded, but a number of them were smashed in the effort and Skrag escaped. He smashed the traitor, and bought passage on a ship to get as far away as possible. Mentally and emotionally broken, he changed his name to Skar to honor the Skar of his father in his mind, the scar on his body from the fight, and the scar on his heart left by the betrayal. He adopted the following motto:
Leave your past life behind you, But don’t forget where you’re from. Be wary of others; don’t trust them, And protect those whom you call friends.
Millennia ago, the Eternal Watcher made his final recording in the Temple of the Ancients and passed on. It was the last of the Ancients, who destroyed themselves through war, besides the Keeper of Souls and the Faceless Warrior. Back in the timeframe of the story, Hithrol goes to a seedy tavern to find Skrag, who has been gone for four years, ever since Zargan was smashed. They encounter Cottor and Neren, and Hithrol finally manages to convince Skrag to return after he tells him Terra is back. The Dragon Riders are now the Riders, and they live in a compound called Paladeen. There are several new members. Skrag receives a letter from Syldar that warns him of a possible enemy that has been smashing all the gladiators of the Arena. Later, Skrag talks to one of the new Riders, the Vampyre Zariana, about Zelfern, who is of her people. Terra and Raini arrive and Skrag spends time with Terra. They discuss the past, their future, and the letter. While most of the Riders are gone, a messenger arrives from the Towers to tell Skrag that Zelfern has smashed a number of people there. Skrag enlists the help of the new Rider, Royale, and his boss, the Drake Palangein, to take him to the City on the River. He arrives too late and finds all but Shadowwrath smashed. Shadowwrath reveals that he is an Ancient called the Faceless Warrior, and sacrifices himself to revive Isabel. Go arrives, and reveals that he is a wanted criminal being pursued by Royale and Palangein. They agree to a truce, and Skrag, Go, Royale, and Palangein go to Baj and Elisa’s house, only to find them taken and a map left there for Skrag to follow. They find Zelfern’s army battling against the Elves and Iron Wolves. Skrag is injured, but Palangein takes him to confront Zelfern. Jayden Crow and Caisara watch the battle and eventually decide to help. Garfell, still alive and Zelfern’s lieutenant, smashes Baj. Elisa smashes him in retaliation, and is then smashed by Zelfern. Go, Royale, and Palangein are smashed by the wizard Orrolc, as is Link. Jayden and Caisara arrive just in time to save Legolie and smash Orrolc. Zelfern reveals that he had Zargan smashed, and Skrag comes to the conclusion that the two of them are very similar. Outraged, Zelfern tries to use his life-draining abilities against Skrag, but they fail. Skrag manages to smash him, but passes from his wound shortly after as he watches the Falkrions flying above him. Hithrol, Olifin, Terra, Raini, Korin, Cloventail, Skirj, Isabel, and Legolie attend Skrag’s funeral. Hithrol announces a statue in his and Zargan’s honor, Skirj is furious that he couldn’t save his brother, and Terra confesses that she loved him. They all watch Skrag’s funeral pyre burn as what may be the last of the Dragonsbane is destroyed, a gift from the Arachnidians.

Races Revealed II
Here are the rest of the races I was keeping hidden.
Ancients- One of the oldest races in the world, the Ancients were a group of 111 immensely powerful beings created by pure, untamed magic. Each could take many forms, but most had preferred forms. Based on these forms, many of them created their own species, some of which still live today. After millennia of steadily increasing tensions, their differences came to a head in a long and terrible war which saw their once verdant home reduced to an empty desert, most of their species destroyed, and all but three smashed. Today, only two survive.
Vampyre- One of the Ancient races, the Vampyre are today largely unknown because of their secluded lifestyle and small population. The Vampyre are smaller than humans and extremely pale. They have black hair, slightly pointed ears, and red eyes. Their one notable ability is the power to transfer life force out of other living things and into themselves. However, very few of them actually use this ability because of the devastating toll it takes on the environment around them.
Falkrions- Centuries ago, the Falkrions were allies of the Mermians, but they were destroyed in a terrible war and fled to the west. They haven’t been seen in this part of the world since. Falkrions are covered in feathers in shades of brown and sometimes black or gray. They have birdlike beaks and talons and wings that allow them to fly. They are intelligent and agile but fragile and are one of the Ancient races.

So, the story is over now, if you haven't been able to tell. However, I do have an outline for a follow-up. It will be shorter than "Half-Breed" and will follow Skirj's quest to bring back Skrag; some of the adventures of Jayden, Caisara, and Isabel; and what happens to the Falkrions. If enough people are interested, I will try to write it, though I can't promise I'll be able to finish. If not, we can just let it end here.

Three years ago today, I posted the original version of this topic on the LMBs. Following a positive response to the prologue, which I had posted on the Medieval Lovers' Chatroom shortly before, I decided to try my hand at writing this story. And now, here we are, over three hundred chapters later, and it's finally over. Since I haven't gotten a response, I don't plan on continuing with "Aftershocks", but that may be for the best, given my worries about being able to finish it. It's been a long journey, and I couldn't have done it without everyone who expressed their support both here and on the LMBs. Without further ado, here you all are:
