I don't understand why a platypus tail is called a beaver tail and a duck bill when the the platypus is older than both species.
How about we say that the beaver has a platypus tail and that duck has a platypus bill.
What do you mean by "older than both species"? Do you mean in evolution? Because I don't believe that... but if it was true, there'd still be no way to determine the age of a species for sure. It's all guesswork.
It probably has to do with the fact that most people in the world are more familiar with ducks and beavers than with platypuses.

Monotremes are some of the oldest animals on the planet, they are also the most primitive species of animals on the planet.

Pretty much. True, it is all guesswork but Australia is assumed to be much older than any of the other continents. Does that mean you don't believe in dinosaurs? I know the Bible mentions a tall animal with a long neck and tail. I forget which book though.
I'm not an evolutionists, just what some may consider an agnostic Christian.
Technically, I'm not more familiar with the beaver. Never seen one in my life. I was probably introduced to Flap the Platypus from Blinky Bill before any duck. As for the rest of the world. I'm not sure whether a beaver or a platypus would be more familiar nowadays. A lot of people are obsessed with Australia.
