The clankers turned back to us. Now it was done. We had nobody left to count on. The girls? Not likely. Other boys? I wasn’t even sure how many were left.
But there was one group I had failed to count on. The people who had stuck us here.
A bunch of white-clad soldiers with riot shields and electric weapons seemed to appear out of the very walls of the maze. They forced the clankers back, pressing them towards us. LEGO drove his men unmercifully, determined not to lose yet another army.
The clankers gave way before two, by now having lost almost half their numbers. Our group was weary, but the newcomers were fresh, and provided most of the initiative.
At some point, the clankers seemed to just realize all was lost, and turned tail. The new army took a few parting shots, before giving up the chase. The formed up into disgustingly perfect ranks, and a few were placed upon stretchers.
I dropped down from my perch, and dashed forward. These people had answers.
LEGO followed, with what little was left of our group. We ground to a halt before their leader.
“RuleJJ.” I ground out.
“Con.” He nodded.
At this point I was pretty confused. He thwarted the initial rebellion, wiped us, and shoved us out here to presumably perish.
And now he risked an army of his precious rule-abiding citizens to save our skins.
“Thank you.” I finally said, to get it out of the way and off my conscience.
“You’re welcome.” He said, the official response from the rulebook, though this one sounded a bit warmer than officially required.
We both stood there, the respective heads of our respective people. And I had no idea what I wanted to say to him. I kind of wanted to slap him, but that didn’t seem diplomatic at this point.
“Brickin what?” I finally burst out.
Yes, I'm back! And doing an excellent job, I must say.
“THAT’S IT?” Sweets burst in. “WE STAY OUT HERE AND GET CHEWED UP, SO YOU GUYS AND HAVE VILLAS AND TVS?”
“Hard times are coming upon us all.” RuleJJ said. “But rather than everything go down all at once, I’d rather make the change more gradual.”
“SO YOU’RE DOWNGRADING TO VHS TAPES OR WHAT?” Sweets said, still full-volume.
“Our specialty is not fighting, Sweetcrazy6.” RuleJJ spread his hands pacifyingly. “But we think we can make a pretty darn good support team.”
“And what if you’re lying?” Sweets challenged.
“Then I have no doubt Con will knock this whole place down to get to me.” RuleJJ said. “But if there is nothing ventured, there is nothing gained.” He held out a hand. “What say you, Con?”
“I can only speak for myself.” I said, gripping his hands. “But I will give my dying breath in battle against these creatures, to keep them from reaching your people.”
“Yo, I’m in.” LEGO spoke up.
“Many will remain unconvinced.” I said, thinking of Benboy and Boomer. “But there is hope. Get those new rebels ready ASAP.”
“I’ll speak with HermanPlatina.” RuleJJ said. “And maybe for once, we can put aside our differences and speak as allies, if not friends. DarkClaw, lead the men back.” His captain turned around and issued some orders. The men started marching back into the corridors.
RuleJJ nodded his head. “Good luck, Con.”
“Make sure and bring us tacos!” LEGO yelled at his retreating figure.
I saluted, and turned back to face what little was left of my band. “We have a new mission.”

As we were leaving the battlefield, a figure gasped out from the rubble. I knelt down next to him. “Shamrock?”
“Aye, know-rank.” He smiled at me through cracked lips. “I got har in time, didn’t I?”
“You saved our necks.” I said, my eyes moistening.
“Benboy sent us out ta getchya.” He said. “He didn’t have no rescue in mind, but avvie, I did. I always trusted ya.”
“Thank you.” I whispered.
He gasped in one final breath. “Pick up some slang, it’ll make ya less of a know-rank.” He let it back out, and never drew in another.
I closed his eyelids sorrowfully, standing up. I wiped away a tear from my grimy face, sure it left a streak. I slowly raised my sombrero up, and tipped it to my fallen comrade. I turned back to the group, who were standing there with bowed heads. “LEGO, what clearing do you advise?”
“I’ll take care of it.” He nodded, and took the lead. I took one last look around the battlefield, sorry that I could not better honor the fallen. Then I took off, running into the light of the rising sun.
It took me like a year and a half or something, but I finished the story. It is my 8th finished stories on the boards, with 16000 words. That makes it my second longest MB story, behind it's prequel.
Quite frankly, this wasn't my best writing. Ever since I came back it was a little bit of a struggle to reignite the spark I once had. A lot of the users I had written into this story have since gone inactive, or never made the transfer in the first place. In especial, Darkie, Ash and Cosmic, and also HermanPlatina, though he didn't make an appearance in this story.
But I did finish it, and that's an accomplishment. It upheld my record of never having quit a story, something I'm proud of. Quite frankly, it's ironic, because every project I start on here I finish, and every project I try not on here doesn't get an ending.
Thank you to all my readers for sticking with this story. Thanks also to my silent readers, batonmaster and IceFire. I have no real idea just how many of my stories you've read, IceFireLucky7, but it's definitely a lot.
If anybody has questions about the story, characters or anything, I'll be happy to answer.
At this point, I don't think I will be turning this into a trilogy.

OOC: Only an epilogue left.
Please be a trilogy, please be a trilogy...
Literally as I was typing that I came up with a spin-off idea. But don't get your hopes up.
*applauds* An emotional CONclusion to an a-maze-ing story. I'm glad you CONtinued and CONpleted The Runner, I really enjoyed reading it and will be looking forward to what happens next in BASICS.
