Avian closed his eyes and counted to ten (slowly). When he opened his eyes, Stok was still gone. "Gone," he said to himself. "Gone...." Why did this situation feel so familiar? The vision, he reminded himself. I saw this happen--just not as clearly as the rest.... He'd seen something else in the vision, too--something that didn't make sense, but disturbed him all the same. He flexed his fingers, nervous energy taking a golden form at the tips. "What's wrong?" asked Dark, who had been watching him carefully. Avian stared into space, searching through the scraps of vision for more answers. "You mean, other than the fact that a saber-tooth just disappeared in front of us?" "Well...yeah." "I don't know," Avian sighed. "What is it about Strainor that--well--that's so important? That made Sir Fangar take him away?" Dark shrugged. "Search me." Avian looked around at the battlefield, nodding. "We'll figure this out. But for now, here's what we're going to do: when we get back to the Lion Temple we'll put together a search party and cover every inch of Chima. Strainor has to be somewhere." Dark nodded and flew off, but Avian secretly felt that it would be a long time before he saw the saber-tooth--his friend--again. In fact, he would count himself lucky if they met again at all.
"I--don't--what?" sputtered Strainor. The other version of himself continued to smirk. "It's simple," he said. "I'm from the future. So I'm called WillBeStrainor. And you, you're just NowStrainor. And don't ask about HasBeenStrainor, we don't need to get into that." "But why are you here?" growled Strainor. WillBeStrainor's expression darkened. "I come from two futures. Don't ask about that, either--I don't know how it works myself. In one of them, the Great Illumination happens again, and we Hunters lose our ice. And in another, we destroy one of the Illumination harnesses, but doing that froze most of Chima solid, us included." As he tried to process this, Strainor asked, "And why are you telling me this?" "Because," said WillBeStrainor, "I came back to join the Hunters and fix the past, and in doing so, fix the future. And you're staying right by our side while we do it." Strainor opened his mouth to argue, but shut it quickly. If he was at WillBeStrainor's side at all times, he'd have the perfect chance to spy. He could see whether all of this was true or not. He could find out why "he" had decided to side with the Hunters again. And he could try to escape once he had all the information he needed to help Avian and Dark stop the Hunters, new advantage or not. If he turned bad in the future, he'd be in the best position to stop it from happening again. "Alright," Strainor said at last, his insides clenching. "Take me with you." WillBeStrainor nodded seriously. "I knew you'd see my way. It's your way, too, after all. Just follow along behind WillBeFangar and WillBeStok." And the four of them started off down the tunnel, vanishing into the darkness.
Epicninja1, HyperSonicOne, and Eris00 seemed to be planning a sequel to this story in jammers on the original topic. I don't know if they ever got around to it, or if so, what it was called...
