I'm trying to get into pixel art, but I'm not good with shading and lighting.

Well, I think it's best to use MS paint, its nice to work with.
As for shading and so on (for an example I'll use a lego head because I'm not very good at anything else
) I suppose it's all about light to dark, shadow under eyes, mouth and so on.
Start with the lightest shade of yellow and work your way down (via customizing and adjusting the color) to the darkest, or vice versa.
That green brick on my animation doesn't look quite right.
