"I... I... I ran because...." Temptation struggles to say. He looks behind Joy and notices a crowd of people gathered to observe the wounded soldiers. "Let's go first, before any other soldiers come." He says quickly.
"Sure." Joy replies as they hurry away from the crowd.
As they leave, both of them suddenly realize that they don't have anywhere to go to talk privately. Every alleyway was packed full of people, and most public places were already packed. At this point in time, the sun was low in the sky just an hour before sunset.
Joy came up with an idea. "Let's stay at an inn for tonight. It's been a long day today, and it's too late for you to head back home at this point. You could use the rest as well." They venture around the city looking for signs of an inn. In a few minutes, they found one and entered the building, hoping they still had rooms to spare. Temptation didn't feel like talking, so Joy took care of getting a room from the innkeeper.
"You're just in time. We do have one room available with two beds and a bathroom." The innkeeper said to them. "However, with the high amount of tourists for Merryleaf's Sandwich Festival, the prices will be higher."
"That's fine. We'll take it." Joy replied. "Is there anything else we need to know?"
The innkeeper replied, "Yes. Quiet hours begin 6 hours after sunset, and no sword fighting in the inn. You will have to make sure that sword stays in its sheathe the whole time you're here."
"Understood. Thank you." Joy replied.
The innkeeper continued, "Oh, and complimentary breakfast is provided. Restaurant door opens at sunrise."
Joy and Temptation headed up the stairs to their room, where they could finally talk in private, as well as rest from their long day.
{JAMMERS! -Zach- ONLY!} OK, that makes sense -- I wanted to know in case I needed/wanted to describe a physical attribute. I like your imagination's image, so I'll take it.
The apartment Joy had rented for herself and her companion, as the innkeeper had stated, consisted of one room with a small, indoor privy acting as the second room. In the first were two simple beds sitting neatly next to each other, bed boards to the wall. The only other furniture in the otherwise bare apartment were a single bedside table that sat between the cots, a coffee table set against the opposite wall, and an old, wilted, potted plant sitting in one corner, long forgotten by its caretaker. By this time it was late afternoon, and warm shafts of fading daylight were filtering in through the single window that displayed the street of the little town. "Good thinking, getting a room before it got too dark," Temptation comments mildly as they walk in. He shuts the door behind Joy. "If you'd waited, someone else would have gotten this, and we'd probably be sleeping outside." "And you're not used to that?" She queries. "You live in the forest." "I've got a place with a roof, if that's what you mean. I don't sleep in the trees like squirrels." He responds with mild amusement, though he glances warily at the walls surrounding them. He's not used to being in such confined spaces. Joy seats herself on one of the beds and proceeds to remove her cloak. "I'd like to stay, to see what this. . . Sandwich Festival is all about. I've never heard of it before." Temptation steps up to the window, glancing out onto the street. After a moment of shared silence, he ventures. "You've come a long way, haven't you?" Joy looks up at him and arches one eyebrow. "What makes you say that?" He turns around and looks at her -- at least, she assumes he's looking at her. It was hard to tell, even in the sunlight. Not for the first time, she wishes she could see his face. "Well, for starters, you don't know about the Merryleaf Sandwich Festival, and in this region, it's pretty popular. Plus, you seem to carry a good amount of money with you; you buy good meals and just got us a nice room, even though the price was higher than usual. "Who are you, Joy?"
"I suppose I have come a long way, have I?" Joy begins as she organizes her thoughts.
"I was born into a wealthy family. My parents owned a successful family buisness with some very rich clients such as the King and Queen and the aristocrats, so in short I came from a rich family. Most rich people buy luxuries and nice things, but my family had the pleasure of giving back to philanthropy and charity. My parents named me Joy because I was their joy in life, and they believed I could share that joy with other people, and I remember seeing the joy from other people when we visited those we gave to..."
For once in Temptation's life, he put on a smile under that hood, but Joy couldn't see it. She continued her story.
"...But after I turned 18, my family was attacked by an evil organization and they kidnapped my parents... and I wasn't.... even there ....to say goodbye..." As Joy said this, tears started flowing from her eyes.
"For the next few years I was left with the servants and the maids who treated me harshly. I was forced to stay at home most of the time and learn the propriety of high society. They tried to make me some 'pretty little princess' and make me attracted to boys, but all I desired was my parents back. That's when I decided I was going to run away and go on an adventure to find them. Along the way I was reminded of the beauty of the rest of the kingdom like village festivals and busy restaurants, as well as dangers like giant-tentacle-creatures, but it finally felt like something away from what my life had become."
