Somebody hated me and my guts. Somebody high up. I checked the tip color. Gold. This was from one of the original game coders! There were only four possibilities!
But then it hit me. No, they didn’t hate my guts. They just wanted to see if I had what it took. I had faced down the odds before. I had fought against special items all night. This was just another one. The most powerful, sure, but still, only a special item.
I summoned a lightsaber, which I promptly chucked at his face. He swung the hammer, and obliterated it.
Oh no.
I grabbed out my electric sword. He swung. The weapon disintegrated in my hands.
I had forgotten about this part.
I went through weapon after weapon, beating a hasty retreat, trying to come up with some sort of plan. My armory was dwindling. I had used up over thirty weapons in this match alone.
My spear split in two. I quickly summoned my next weapons. A small pile of boomerangs appeared in my hands. I tucked them under one arms, and then started chucking them. I kept summoning and throwing, summoning and throwing. He waded his way through them, smashing them one after another. His hammer swung in blinding circles, he easily blocked each and every last one.
And then suddenly he stopped. His avatar blinked. Match over. He glanced down, trying to figure out where I had got him.
There was a ninja star poking into his chest.
I grinned at him.
He gave me a black look, and disappeared.
He was gone by the time I got back into the lobby. Skul had fled as well.
The whole warehouse burst into cheers and applause.
“YOU DONE IT!” Mateo crossed the room in one fell-swoop, dumped my laptop onto the cushions and crushed me into a hug. Then he and the other guys hoisted me on their shoulders. I glanced at the TV, where my avatar just stared stupidly at all the others milling around me.
They finally put me down, and gave Celeste her chance. She crushed me into a hug as well, but I got a kiss on the cheek too. I glanced at her. She blushed, and backed off. I grinned at her.
Ever had that moment when everything in your life just seems to be perfect?
It’s pretty sweet.

He went on to have the best win-lose ratio in the game. He never changed, though. He always played for the people, and with the people.
He proposed to Celeste the next year (with Mr. Huntingway’s permission and even some tips), and they were married the following. Mateo was his best man.
Unfortunately, with his rise to power and the following revolution of chatter-combat gamers, the greats launched a protest. Out of the top 50, 37 of them cashed in all their XP and quit. The amount of money owed was humongous. They broke the game. It shut down the next month.
They had hoped it would be blamed on TheGreatCon. And in some places, maybe, people cursed his name for dragging them all down with his rise up. But most people understood who really was at fault here.
While he never fully disappeared from the limelight, following the death of the LMBs, TheGreatCon fell from the front page. People kept waiting for him to switch games, to make a name in the next big thing. He never did, though.
It was a mystery what he was doing. It was well-known that he wasn’t just grinding away at some miserable day-job though. The game creators took care of that. They scratched up the very last of the funds before they lost it all, and sent them to the one guy who actually deserved them.
What he did with them isn’t just his story, though.
The ending made me cry. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, the game was shut down! Sad ending, but it was good.
I almost thoroughly enjoyed the story. I give it a rating of about 8.9/10 (only thing I disliked was the marriage and perhaps the fact that such a great game died, apologies but it had quite a bit of an effect on the final score ).

This was an absolutely amazing story Con!! Like really, I fully enjoyed reading every part. I remember the day I decided to read this, that's all I did all day! The world set up is interesting and intriguing. And the characters are realistic and lovable. Really enjoyed it and was definitely inspired.
Can't wait for the sequel! It would be cool to have a part in the next one.

192 pages...and I enjoyed every moment of it.
This story still blows me away no matter how many times I have read and re-read it. BASICS is far more than mere words: it's an entire world of its own that, while consisted of imaginative elements and light-hearted banters, nevertheless reminds its readers of the twists and turns of life and both its bitter and warming moments that we will come to endure as we go on our own journey. All the characters have a considerable depth and personality that make them all the more...alive...and resonate strongly with people we know, or even ourselves. I can't even begin to describe just how much I truly adore the development of this story, nor can I even picture how this thrilling tale and its lively cast was conceived. The ending is beautiful...

Brick it, Con. This is awesome. I'm so happy you finished this story!! ^.^ --not because it's over, no, I mean how you finished something you set your mind to create and to present it to us. This is definitely a favorite of mine, one of the greatest stories I've read on the Eternals or the MBs, and that's saying something. Every part was so fun to read! The plot and characters were so full of wit and charm and there were plenty of awesome lines to laugh out loud at -- yet at the same time, there were those underlying themes adding depth to the story, and those less lighthearted, earnest moments that added an element of value and down-to-earth emotion to the moment. HUGE congratulations for finishing Basics (A Gamers Story)! I'm really looking forward to whatever you have in store for us next.
