Why are you still friends? Good, I would hate to have to visit a hospital to sign your cast anytime soon.
I honestly don't know, I end up burying my head in my hands and wishing I was somewhere else every time I'm around him. Are you saying I'd lose?
Listen to yourself, let him drift out of you life. No no, I'm sure you totally could have a chance at it. It's just that in these situations experience usually influences fate a lot of the time.
We rigged up my bedroom as best as possible, and Mateo delivered the invitation. I didn’t know at this point if I really wanted her to say yes. What was I getting myself into?
I was rescuing our friendship, that’s what. Friends. That’s all.
Somehow I didn’t even sound CONvincing to myself.
Mateo dropped in later. “She said no.”
A weight lifted off my shoulders. I could deal with some other time. I could procrastinate! It was euphoric! I felt I could fly!
“But I convinced her to come. She’s on for six.”
Panic settled back into my chest with alarming familiarity. “I can’t do this. I don’t…I don’t…what am I doing?”
See, told you I didn’t believe myself. It was only thirty seconds later and I was already second-guessing myself.
“Hey, pal, calm down.” He put a hand on my shoulder. “If you mess this up you will only be ruining your friendship with the only girl you’ve ever hit it off with, and incidentally, I might also give up on you. No pressure.”
“Hysterical.” I said, which ironically enough expressed my feelings.
“Just don’t spill the Gatorade and use your silverware.” He patted me on the shoulder. “I’m gonna go check on the food.” We had ordered Chinese. He stepped outside with his phone.
I wrung my hands, and started pacing. I don’t know how long I kept it up, but next I knew I almost ran over Celeste as she stepped in. “Hullo.” I said immediately.
“Hello.” She said, not quite icily, but still reserved. “You wanted to talk?”
“Um, yeah.” I said, not making a very great impression. “Wanna, uh, sit down?”
“I’m good here.” She said, staying by the door.
“Well, uh, I just wanted to say I’m sorry.”
“If that’s all you’ve got I’m leaving.”

“Yeah, a couple hundred or so you missed, incidentally.”
“Oh no. Oh no no no.” I repeated, rubbing my hands through my hair. “This is not at all what…no no no…not what I had in…oh, I don’t know!” I threw up my hands.
“Well, if you’re just friends, then we’re good.” He said. “Give it about four years, and then take a lot of flights.” He pulled out his gaming rig, and booted up the game.
I flipped it back off. “No.”
“No what?” He said.
“That does not work.” I said forcefully.
“Then…romantic dinner?” He asked.
I winced. “Is there no other way…?”
“Well, we could try saving her life, but that’d involve putting her in danger first.”
