I decided to just give up, and dropped back towards my position as Mateo gave her a few quick instructions and pointed her in the right direction.
Goalie hadn’t always been my position. I used to score goals like baskets, but the war had ended that. I had switched to goalie after I missed three shots in one game. It was rough, knowing you were already past your prime physically, and you were only sixteen.
The goal posts were composed of a light pole and a concrete garden gnome. I patted the little guy on the head, and then turned back to the game.
The ball streaked across the field in calculated arcs, with players vying for control. The other team broke free, and I slid forward, coming out with the ball and slide-tackling a guy. The privileges of being goalie. The guy sustained no damage, falling with more skill than your standard ninja.
I hurled the ball back up field, and play resumed. The ball whizzed back towards me, but Mateo intercepted it with a skillful nod of his head that redirected it towards another of our players, who rainbowed it over top his defender before passing it off to a little guy who faked his guy off and slid between him and another. He shot it off towards the white tennies girl. She stutter-stepped, and prepared to lay into it.
One of the guys slid in front of her, and back out again, taking the ball with him.
WelCON to South America. You can whip our tails in any other sport, but don’t mess with us in soccer.
They game played out before my wary eyes, but my defenders kept the other team mostly away from me, except for some long shots which I managed to bring down. It was still scoreless. The time had run on long enough that the next goal would win.
The teams on the sidelines yelled insults as we tried another drive. We failed, they booed us some more, and then switched to name-calling the other team. They were fans of whoever lacked possession at the time.
They managed to evade a few players, and then did a long pass across field. Straight to the girl that our newbie was supposed to be guarding. She was on the opposite end, waiting for a cherry-pick.
That soccer lingo is a bit high for me, besides the fact I like to mess around with kicking one anyway. Great new chapters! And a cliffhanger!
I may or may not have written the first extensive description of a soccer game on an MB story. Yeah, I keep finding those in my story in CONvenient places.

The girl before me knew her stuff. She took three quick dribbles forward, drawing me out of my box as I dashed her.
She fired hard. I switched direction, and lunged backwards, towards the ball, which was arcing over my head.
Just as I was leaving the ground, though, my leg slipped. I let out a small grunt as my dive got thrown off. I plummeted backwards. The ball was gone, it was undoubtedly a goal. Now I was just trying to save myself. I twisted mid-air, and managed to get my hands underneath me. I pressed up, and barely touched the ground. I stayed there for a few seconds, before dropping all the way down, smacking the ground once, and pulling myself back up.
The other team finished some quick celebratory slaps on the backs of the girl, and then hurried over to grab the ball and help me up. Mateo loped over to me. “Nice try.”
I nodded, and headed for the sidelines. He trailed after me, the team drifting off as well. We didn’t get to stay on.

I reached the sidelines, and leaned up against the building, letting out a pent up breath.
“Your leg?” Mateo glanced at me knowingly.
“Yeah, give me a few secs.” I said, taking a deep breath.
“You had that ball, man. I saw it in your face.”
“Yeah, till I slipped.” I glanced down at my limb accusingly. “Dumb war.”
“Stupid.” He agreed.
I had to grin. This was a standard end to CONversations that involved my bum leg. “I think I’m out for today.”
“Eh, I’m ready for something else anyways.” Mateo said. “Wanna come over to my place and play some LMB?”
“LMB?” I had to ask.
“LEGO Multiplayer Battles.”
“Ah.” I said. “In that case, no question.”
“See you in a few.” He retrieved his soccer ball, which they switched out for another, equally ratty one. They hadn’t touched the girl’s ball, surprisingly. Probs afraid to ruin it. It wasn’t often we had a new ball at the games.
That reminded me. Where was she? I glanced around, just as she appeared next to me. “Good game, when’s our next?”
“Me and Mateo our done for the night.” I pointed at him. “Not sure if the rest of the group is still around.”
“Where are you two going?” “His house.”
She seemed to be waiting for something. An invite? I barely knew her. “See you around.” I turned away, and trotted down the street, ignoring the throb in my leg.
OOC: Two parts in one day, sorry. It was just barely too big for one...and I really wanted to finish up this scene.
