would you recommend that i name them using words from various languages as inspiration, or just come up with the best names i can?
Neither. Names have meaning in their own right. For instance, my username is Con, and in Celtic Con means wise, which is why I was comfortable switching from LolimonTheWise to TheGreatCon, because they carry most of the same meaning.
Con is also Irish for Hero, so yeah.
If it'd make you feel better, you could describe the character to us, and then we could suggest names or something.
right now i'm wishing i had the linguistic knowledge of tolkien
i feel like there are way too many characters to describe, especially since i haven't fully fleshed out all of them yet
any fantasy writers here? i want to start working on my own universe (i have a lot of stuff planned out), but i need advice on naming characters
List of popular baby names isn't a bad place to start, unless you're looking for more unique names. In that case, start experimenting with combining syllables.
if i wanted normal names, i wouldn't have a problem coming up with them. but this is an entire fantasy universe, sadly for me

Well, you could always teach yourself, that's what I did/ am doing.
That's not good, having too many characters means that you're running the possible risk of under-developed main characters.

So you want help with good names for your characters?
yes please. and species, and kingdoms
This all really depends on the type of fantasy you're writing. That will determine what sounds and conjugates to use for all of the above. For instance, if you were doing a scandanavian/anglo-saxon/European/afrikaan/persian/polonesian/native american fantasy, you likely wouldn't have very many characters named Li Tu'tuk or a Khanate kingdom (Though the Mongolian empire did span all the way to the russian principalities and turkey by the time of the crusades, so It's not outside of the realm of possibility.). Most likely in the persian one, but more likely in an indian/asian fantasy would that name be read with pause for thought that it's possible misplaced. This woud further determind the type of lore your world has as well as the creature's names.

Well. . . Checking out foreign languages is always good; stemming your words from something like that always adds a more exotic feel to your words. One trick I taught myself is to look at license plates on the road or in the parking lot, and see if you can make up words from the weird jumble of numbers and letters.
