Well, emotes are normally composed of keyboard characters to make faces, such as :-), but I think it can also apply to images in place of character-made faces.
Emojis are specifically made by Apple and all have a specific style. I think Emoji is more of a branded term for a specific kind of emote while "emote" is general. *-)

For example, there's a chicken emoji (🐔), but no derp emoji, because Apple didn't add the derp to their catalogue of emojis. [derp]

Also, I've done zero research into this, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
