By going through the door at the end of the hall, the remaining members of the team entered a small square room. There was a single door at the end of the room directly ahead, and it was just barely open; the red light they'd seen before came through the crack, and clearly originated from the next room. They were going to advance again, but the spy decided that this was when he'd make his move. Not so long ago, the spy had a falling out with the queen of his former tribe, which drove him to strike out on his own. However, before he could join his current faction, he was intercepted by the Brotherhood of Vultures in the Arctic Northern Region. Vamprah made a deal with him; he would feed the vultures information on the southern tribes, and in return, Vamprah would install the spy as the leader of his original tribe when the Ice Hunters eventually broke their curse and attacked the inlands and Outlands. Now, the spy was ready to make his move and begin his path to fulfilling his destiny...
Rex quickly drew his black sword...to block a scythe swipe at Dr. Benjamin from Sezrac. "Sezrac??" Asked Benjamin, taken by surprise. "What are you doing?!" "Sorry Dr, but I will do what I must to ensure that you two don't return to the south with knowledge of the vultures' existence." Sezrac pulled back and dodged a swing from Rex. "We can't have the Crawlers and inland tribes learning of their doom, can we?" "You're a spy for those birds?" Rex asked. "We made a deal I couldn't refuse." Sezrac said, shrugging. "As the Ice Hunters rule Chima, Sezrac, the new king of the Spiders, will rule the Outlands." "You can't defeat the Crawler Empire!" Benjamin snarled. "No, I cannot." Agreed Sezrac. "But the Ice Hunters can!" Sezrac shot webs from two of his back legs, pinning Benjamin and Rex against the far end of the wall, on either side of the doorway they'd entered from. Rex tried to reach his sword, which was on the floor. Sezrac clasped his hands behind his back and paced around as he talked. "Your tribes will find that the Ice Hunters can freeze almost anything in their path." Sezrac explained. "There is no hope for your tribes against the Ice Hunters, regardless of how much chi the Crawler Empire has. I made the logical choice by allying with Lord Vamprah and the Brotherhood of Vultures. In doing so, I have ensured my tribe's safety, as well as my own rise to power and absolute dominion." "It sounds to me that once this Vamprah gets what he wants, he'll crush you." Benjamin said, struggling to escape the webbing. "Perhaps." Sezrac said, shrugging. "But you two won't be around to see that happen." Rex and Benjamin could see Sezrac's evil smile as he walked toward them. "I will enjoy this meal of fresh—" Suddenly, the door to the next room burst open. The red light flooded the room, and the three of them could now see that it was coming from a golden staff with a crimson blade at its tip. It was carried by a yellow feline wearing golden armor, with a red and orange chi orb in his chest and black spots all over his fur. When the door burst open, Sezrac instinctively whipped around and shot a web at the newcomer. The yellow feline growled as the web wrapped around him. He used his staff to swiftly cut up the web, and the pieces of the web seemed to melt. "So, you are an ally with the Ice Hunters." Growled the prison warden, who must have listened to their conversation from the other room. "Er, uh, well I wouldn't say that." Sezrac stuttered. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves now—" "SILENCE!!" Roared the prison warden, tapping his staff on the ground. "It sure sounded to me like you were explaining your allegiance with the Brotherhood of Vultures." "Ah, I see how you could think that." Sezrac said, nodding and smiling. Rex was going to warn the prison warden that Sezrac was hiding his small scythe behind his back, but Benjamin, stuck to the wall next to him, quietly told him not to. "Let's see how this plays out." Benjamin whispered to Rex. "I will gladly explain." Said Sezrac as he walked toward the prison warden. "Please, do." Said the warden. "Well, you see..." Sezrac began, before revealing his scythe and lunging at the warden, "you are indeed correct about my allegiances!" At an unpredictably fast rate, the yellow feline struck Sezrac's scythe with his staff, and the former was immediately melted. Sezrac dodged another swing and stepped back, aghast. "Heh, uh...maybe we can work something out." Sezrac said as the warden pointed his fiery staff at him. "Let's make a deal—!" A bolt of red lightning lashed out of the staff's red tip and struck Sezrac's torso. Flames enveloped the spider, and in a flash of light, a pile of ash landed on the floor. All this happened in less than a second.
Dr. Benjamin, still webbed-up on the wall, looked down at the smoking pile of ash on the floor that had been Sezrac a moment before. One by one, each member of Benjamin's team had been lost; first Braxin, then Leonard, and now Sezrac. Rex was probably next, Benjamin guessed. "We weren't with him." Rex said quickly. "The two of us were just touring this place, and then this guy came into the room and webbed us to the wall—" "We might as well tell him the truth." Interrupted Benjamin. He went on to explain to the leopard prison warden that he was part of an empire in the south, and that he was leading a research team into the Arctic Northern Regions. Benjamin related the events that had led them to this point. "I see." Said the warden, using his fire staff to incinerate the spider webs pinning them to the wall. "I am Longfang of the Leopard Tribe. I am the leopard tasked to guard this prison for this month. We alternate, and a different leopard gets this job each month, you see." "But there aren't any inmates." Said Rex. "There is one." Said Longfang. "A very dangerous Sabertooth tiger, who for some reason was never frozen like the rest of his tribe. We captured him a long time ago and brought him to this prison." Suddenly, an violent earthquake rocked the old prison, causing parts of it to cave in. A piece of the ceiling came down on Longfang, knocking him unconscious beneath the rubble as his orange and red chi orb fizzled out. "This will be a good weapon to study and mass produce." Benjamin said, reaching for the fire staff. But he yelped and pulled his hand back once he touched the hot staff, still cooling off. Rex peered through the doorway, where he saw a shattered mechanism in the next room. The mechanism seemed to be intended for holding an entire body in place. A feline with 2 limbs made of ice got up off the ground, and charged for Rex. "No—" Rex started, before being frozen solid by the sabertooth's punch. "I'm finally free!" Roared Senix, as he froze the downed Longfang. Benjamin quickly flew out the hole in the partially shattered roof. So there are at least two species with these ice powers up here in the north. Thought Benjamin as he flew away from the rapidly freezing prison. They are clearly a threat to the Crawler Empire and the inland tribes...and yet everyone's fighting down south. I must get back and warn them all! The Crawler Empire and the inland tribes must team up to even hope to stand a chance against these ice monsters! Senix smashed through the prison wall and ran through the snow, carrying an icy spear he must have reclaimed from the prison. "You're not going anywhere!" Snarled Senix, throwing his spear. Before Benjamin could dodge it, the spear struck him in the chest. But instead of feeling a sharp life-ending pierce, Benjamin felt ice rapidly spread across his body, starting from the point the spear had struck. Benjamin spiraled into the snow below as the ice encased his wings. "No!" Said Benjamin. "I was so close to warning them! So cl—" The frozen Benjamin landed in the snow like a rock. Senix chuckled as he pulled his spear out of the ice, the hole where the spearhead had been quickly filling. "Time to see if I can awaken my fellow sabertooths." Senix said, trudging through the snow to the east.
