“You mentioned something about this—sorcerer, mage, whatever you call him—being able to ‘see into other worlds’.” He took a breath. “I’m not from this world. Ninjago is a completely different realm from here. And right now, I just know my home’s in danger, and my friends probably have no idea what they’re dealing with—I have no idea what we’re dealing with! All I know is that I need to somehow find Skylor and get us both back to Ninjago to stop these evil giant cats. If Hälogen has a way to get me back home, I’m going to do whatever it takes to get there. I don’t care if I have to bribe him, steal from him, or destroy him. I need to get home.” A long, stunned silence followed his outburst. Kai stole a glance over his shoulder and saw his companions sharing astounded looks with one another. Jukeni looked to be incredulous, but Kaeden’s eyes were unreadable. Kai held his breath and waited—he hated waiting. “All right, then,” Kaeden finally spoke. “So you help us fight against the Pingousers in exchange for getting back to Ninjago. That sounds like a rather fair deal.” Kai relaxed with a small sigh. “Wha—? You believe him?” Jukeni shot Kai a hasty glance. “I mean— no, I don’t think you’re lying, Kai, but— wow. Another realm? Like, a whole other world? Seriously? That’s just— wow.” He sat back with a dazed look on his face. “Gimme a minute or two to process that.” “Really, is that so hard to believe,” Kaeden asked with a smile, “after what we’ve seen Kai do tonight?” He gestured around them. “Shooting fire from his hands, whipping out tiny tornadoes, beating dozens of men single-handedly, and summoning magical creatures? No one—mage or otherwise—from anywhere I’ve heard in our world has abilities like that. His talents alone are proof enough he’s from far away. In any case, I say he joins us.” “So where to now?” Now that that matter was settled, Kai was impatient to get started as soon as possible—though technically, he had little idea of what exactly they were doing. Kaeden was quiet, while Jukeni answered for the first time. “Well, if you’re joining us, we’ll have to take you to meet Tinny Bird.”
“‘Tinny Bird’?” Kai chortled. “What kind of name is that?” Jukeni huffed, “It’s not his real name. It’s like a codename for him. Hardly anybody knows what he’s really called, only the members of the rebellion he trusts the most. Bird is the leader.” “We have to head toward the base,” Kaeden said. “Jukeni and I used to stop by for the missions and meetings, but now that our cover’s been blown, I suppose it’ll be our permanent residence until further notice.” “Where’s the base?” “Just follow the river upstream. We probably won’t get there until tomorrow afternoon, but there are some caves by old fishing spots that we can hide in and sleep for the night.” “We’ll probably get there faster with Kai’s— uh, dragon,” Jukeni protested. “We’d still be flying all night, and right now what we need to do is lay low.” Kaeden retorted. “All right,” Kai shifted in his seat and tugged on the chained reins he held. “Upstream it is.” The dragon turned and glided gently toward the winding line of silver that was the river. “But— are you sure you want to do this, Kai?” Jukeni asked after a minute of silence. “If you get involved—I mean, really get involved—in the rebellion against Pingous, you’re a wanted criminal. Everyone will always be after you, and—” “Look, Jukeni,” Kai interrupted. “I appreciate the concern, but in case you haven’t already noticed, I can take care of myself. I don’t care what Pingous thinks of me or if they try to hunt me down for the rest of their lives. All I want is to get back home.” Jukeni gave him a long look before muttering, “You’re either the bravest guy I’ve ever met, or the craziest.” “Sometimes the bravest warriors have to be the craziest,” Kaeden remarked with a smile.
Kai guided the red-glimmering dragon to follow the river. The dark landscape skimmed below his vision. The silence of the night once again gently enveloped the young fugitives in its embrace, and each boy was left to his own thoughts. Occasionally Jukeni glanced back over his shoulder, as if half-hoping to see his home even from the great distance they had flown across. Kaeden gazed impassively at the clouds and stars that drifted by them. Kai kept his eyes forward, concentrating on following the river that glinted faintly in the starlight. Within himself he struggled to hide the dancing jubilation he felt. Again and again, he thought: This is my chance. Hang on, guys. Hang on, Skylor. I’m coming. Whatever it takes, I’m coming home.
Sword Art Online does it too. The main characters had to have medical treatment, go to a special school where they can catch up on the high school they missed, and be watched for any signs of mental problems due to being trapped there so long. As well as having to get used to living normal lives again and reconnecting with their families. Except in that case it's a video game they were trapped in, but it's still considered an isekai. ( SAO has got some sketchy stuff in it though, so if you do ever watch it there's definitely some parts you are going to want to skip... ) Also it always puts a smile on my face whenever I think about how the Chronicles of Narnia is an isekai. In fact, there was really many instances of isekai happening throughout the series. Is the only book that doesn't have it The Horse and His Boy? Ironically that one is my favorite. XD
Really! Wow, that's cool! Tsk, I'd really like to watch it, but knowing me, I'd be much better off avoiding the sketchy things. Same... xD HA, why am I not surprised? XD I think that one's my mom's favorite, too. I have good memories with those books. :3
Come to think of it, there's one books series, Beyonders, by Brandon Mull, that explores this concept a little... but honestly, not as much as I would have liked. Perhaps one day I should write myself a proper isekai story where I play with all the concepts I wanted all the anime and books to explore.
Don't worry, you're not missing much. Because it has horses in it and the general plot is the kind of story I like. XD Me too. :3
Thank you! To be honest, writing these chapters I found myself more interested by what was going on in Ninjago rather than Kai's isekai adventure, but I tried to make his parts as interesting as I could.
:c Talon...What he has to go through these past several chapters is just so unbelievably painful and cruel. Poor dude needs a break
Matilda is awesome! xD I love how even Black Blood, this almighty Moon Tribe Queen with a thirst for familial vengeance and destruction of all humanity, can get startled by something so small so easily
Me, knowing what else happens to Eagle Talon in this episode: *nervous sweating* OwO'
****** Thus he breathed a deep sigh of relief when, quickly running his fingers through the tiny tongue of fire, a piece of the heat leapt onto the back of his hand. He felt its warmth, but was not burnt—a pro to being the Elemental Master of Fire. Smiling, he rolled his hand and fingers around, making the flame run this way and that over his skin. It scurried and skipped, flickering and burning faintly, like a little animal.
“You—!” Jukeni started. Gesber was on Kai in a second. His victim had no time to react. Before he knew it, an explosion of pain numbed his jaw and sent him staggering. Through the haze Kai felt instinct take control, and he reared up with a shout. Hands from behind grabbed him again. He felt himself forced down to his knees just before another blow came. More shock. His head swam. Punch after punch came. Kai wanted to retaliate, to fight back, to hurt Gesber—his anger boiled and raged within, an untamable force—but the other soldiers held him down, forcing him to stay bent on his knees in the grass as Gesber delightedly exacted his revenge on him. “Not so tough now, are you, Spiky?” He jeered as he delivered an uppercut. “You’re brave enough with your little friends to back you up! Typical Pawrelesers!” Bam. Whack. Bam. More fists to the face. More bursts of pain. Kai opened his mouth to snap something back, but another uppercut smashed his jaws together, making him bite his tongue painfully. “Boonca-faced coward!” Gesber laughed, and other soldiers sneered with him. “And you act like such a tough guy! I’ve seen sholohs fight better than you do!” Mocking laughs and jeers in his ears began to fade in the background as the pain continued on. His nose, his ears, the sides of his head, his jawline, his collarbone, his cheekbones; all became a target for those merciless scores. At first, it hurt like crazy. Then it numbed. He became desensitized to it. He continued to feel every blow, but it all faded into a hot haze. Beyond the senses of his own pain, he could hear distant voices in the background: Nama screaming something. Beenthina was beginning to cry. Jukeni shouted continuously, and some of the soldiers cried out and barked orders, presumably when he tried to break free and stop Kai’s persecution. Gesber didn’t stop. He just hit him again and again. Kai ducked his head by a few inches in a weak attempt to escape the worst of the other man’s vengeance. Yet even through all this, Kai’s anger only grew. His heart pounded for justice. His arms ached for action. His hands flushed with fury— —and fire.
Oh boy, this is getting interesting!!!
These parts with Kai are really something so far, good job! O.O
When his anger had reached its peak, that was when Kai’s hands burst into flames. The fire lit up the night for a few yards with a roar, startling everybody. The soldiers holding him down cried out with shock and pain and staggered back. Gesber squealed something unintelligible and, suddenly unbalanced in the middle of a swinging blow, stumbled back to get away and fell sprawling on the grass. Everyone stood stock-still and gaped at the young man whose hands were suddenly blazing. Elation erased most of the physical pain he felt. Triumphantly, Kai jumped to his feet, stood in a traditional ninja fighting stance, and cast a cocky grin at his audience of Pawreles peasants and Pingous soldiers. “I don’t know how you do things here in Pawreles,” he declared. “But where I come from, villains like you are put in their place!” Everyone was staring at him like he had grown four arms. Then a voice cried, “Keep back! He must be a mage!” A mage, huh? Kai smirked. Can a mage do this? “Ninjaaaa-go!” With the signature battlecry from his home, Kai whipped around and created a Spinjitzu vortex. The bright orange light of it lit up the entire clearing in a warm glow. Startled shouts and cries echoed into the night. No one could take their eyes off of the unearthly spectacle taking place before them. First things first: Kai made a point in ramming into Gesber. From his dim line of vision outside the vortex, he could see the young private being flung up in the air and away into the trees. The girlish squeal it elicited from Gesber was more than satisfying for Kai. Then he turned on the rest of the soldiers. Like pins before a bowling ball they fell before him, as his Spinjitzu whipped one way and zipped the other across the ground. Men by the dozen were flung in and out, flailing and screaming in terror. None of them had ever heard of nor experienced Spinjitzu before, and this introduction to the art was far from a gentle one. Kai had a little too much fun flinging his enemies around like limp rag dolls.
He let the vortex evaporate within a second and surveyed the scene. Pingous soldiers lay strewn about here and there, stunned and groaning. The few who had been far enough away from the skirmish now retreated a few steps backward, eyeing Kai warily. Meanwhile the Pawrelesers stood still and stared at him in utter and blatant astonishment. “That’s what a ninja does, Jukeni.” Kai grinned at the other boy’s slack-jawed face. General Daigsohn’s rumbling cry broke the too-short silence. “What are you standing around for, you idiots?!” The big man snarled at the soldiers cowering away from Kai. “He’s just a boy! Quit acting like sniveling little sholohs and get him!” Spurred on by their irate leader, the soldiers gripped their spears and swords, glared at their young adversary, and in a bumbling group, charged at him. Kai couldn’t have asked for anything better. He kicked the first and second men in the stomach, where their armor wasn’t as thick, and send them falling away with the breath knocked out of them. The third came at him with his spear bared and aimed at Kai’s torso. The ninja snatched the spear below the head, wrenched it out of the soldier’s grasp and used his other hand to deliver a smart uppercut, followed by another kick to the stomach. The third one joined the others on the ground. Movement caught his eye from the side, and he saw a younger man coming at him swinging a straight-bladed sword. Swiftly, Kai ducked backwards on his feet as the blade sliced just inches above his head. Within two seconds he straightened up, leaned forward, grabbed the off-balance man by the collar of his cuirass, and shoved him aside to the ground. “Holy cow,” Jukeni mumbled. Beenthina, mouth gaping open at the spectacle taking place before her, took a moment to glance up at her brother and ask, “Can you do that?” “Holy cow,” was his only response.
That's the name of the made up creatures/people you created, right?
“Wait!” Kai held up his hands to stop him. “Guys, I’ve got a better idea. Watch this.” Jukeni and Kaeden wore identical expressions of puzzlement and barely-suppressed impatience as Kai walked a few paces away from them, choosing a somewhat-wide spot that was clear of trees. There, he took a deep breath, held his hands out, and once again summoned fiery energy within him. There was a flash of blinding light. Jukeni and Kaeden stumbled back with startled shouts. Within a second the light faded to a lower red glow—and a rumbling growl shook the air. Kai couldn’t stop the grin on his face growing wider. “It may not be a phoenix, but it should get us to where we want to go.” Kai’s elemental dragon stood before him and the Pawreles youths, towering over their heads, at least twice as tall as Kaeden was. Its massive, scaly body shimmered a dark crimson color, with a few pale silver scales standing out against its snakelike neck and the two hind legs it balanced on. Smoke flew from the beast’s nostrils. Its tail twitched and lashed slowly over the grass. Kai felt a familiar thrill of excitement when the great beast opened its bright amber eyes and looked at him. It was not alive—made only by the ninja’s own energy of his power—but the illusion seemed to move and breathe like any other animal. There was a moment of stunned silence before Jukeni squealed, “Wha— what is that thing?!” “My dragon.” Kai turned to smirk at him. As if his movement prompted him, the dragon’s head twitched toward where Jukeni and Kaeden stood, and its long whiskers trembled as it sniffed the air. Jukeni stammered, never taking his eyes off the glowing animal. “A— a dragon? What’s a dragon—?” “Whatever this is, it looks like a way to get out of here,” Kaeden remarked tersely. “You can control it, Kai?” For an answer, Kai ran and took a bounding leap onto the dragon’s back. “Come on! Those eggheads will be here any second!” He settled into his familiar place atop the dragon’s neck and gripped the chains that always seemed to come out of nowhere whenever the elemental dragons were summoned.

Oh interesting. Yes! You should do that.
'K great. Me, too...! I'd love to see them make a movie out of it, but only if they were really able to capute the magic of the setting and the precious friendship between the horse and his boy.
*adds that to the long list of vague ideas of stories I ought to write*

I really want to see an Avatar-style animation of this bit.
