(It looked like he was suffering much by the Ring's power urging him to turn to greed and hate, and when Gollum began egging him on he lost his temper and had to take it out on poor Sam. I'm not saying it was right, I'm just saying I think I understand. I have some very sweet, kind, understanding, loyal people in my life, yet I can recall more than one time I've taken out my anger on them. It may just be a flaw that makes us human -- or hobbit. )

I like Gollum -- as a villain, I mean. Also, every time I hear him say something like "We hates it!" or "my precious", I can only think of hearing my dad (and Brent Miller, but that's a different story ) imitating him hilariously, so it just makes me grin and want to laugh whenever I see him. It's just a weird quirk I share with my dad.
