Chapter 6: Jay’s Investigation
The next evening, back at Steep Wisdom, Lloyd was helping Misako move boxes from the shop to the Bounty so they could deliver the load to the Temple of Airjitsu the next day. Nya was assisting, and they were walking down the hall by the living room, each with a box in their hands. When he passed by the doorway to the living room, Lloyd paused. Jay was sitting quietly on the couch, staring at a piece of paper in his hand. This looked rather odd, so Lloyd asked. “What’cha do-in?”
“Nothing.” Not one, but three voices responded.
Lloyd jumped, then realized that Kai and Cole were also in the living room. Whilst Jay was sitting on the couch and nervously stuffing the paper into his pocket, Cole was by the door leading to the front with his sweater on, and Kai was walking past Jay with his own civilian clothes on. All three of them were staring at Lloyd with guilty expressions.
He arched an eyebrow suspiciously. “Ooooh-kay. . . I was really asking Jay, but now I’m wondering what you guys are doing, too.”
There was an awkward silence. Then Kai sighed. “I’m meeting Skylor at Mister Chen’s tonight, all right?” A hint of color rose on his cheeks, and he stuck his hands in his pockets self-consciously.
Lloyd bit back an amused grin. “OK. . . Now Cole, what are you doing?”
“Uhh. . .” Cole licked his lips. “Visiting Dad.” He looked away.
Nya turned back to see what the hold-up was, and now was watching the three boys with a suspicious gaze. Lloyd turned to his friend sitting on the sofa. “And Jay, what are you doing?”
“Umm. . .” Jay seemed to shrink under Lloyd and Nya’s inquiring stares. “Uh. . . sitting?”
Lloyd shifted the box in his arms. “OK, Kai, I don’t have a problem with you and Skylor having a date, but Cole and Jay, I’m starting to get the feeling that you’re—Cole?” He looked around the room and realized that Cole had disappeared. “Cole! Gah, darn it! This is becoming a bad habit with him!” He groaned.
Jay shot out of the couch. “You know what? I think I’ll go with him! The guy’ll probably need some company, and I haven’t seen Lou in a while! OK, bye, see ya!” With that, he raced out of the room, leaving Kai to walk away awkwardly.
Lloyd and Nya looked at each other.
“Well. . . That was odd.” Lloyd said.
“I’ll say.” Nya replied.
“Man, you’d think they had—Ah-CHIEE!” An adorable sneeze erupted from him, making him shut his eyes and scrunch up his nose, which only made it cuter.
“Whiskers!” Nya exclaimed laughingly. The skinny tabby was rubbing Lloyd’s legs and waving its tail haughtily.
“Goob geef, bhy do cats always go bor the dog beople?!” Lloyd sniffed and began trotting down the hall, trying to lose Whiskers.
Nya followed him with a laugh. “She must like you!”
“Well, I bon’t, so jusd dell her do sday away from be! Ah-CHIEE!”
Whiskers sat on her haunches and watched the two teens walk down the hall. Her whiskers
twitched in amusement.

Jay used the evening shadows to his advantage as he silently followed Cole down the hill leading away from the teashop, slipping in and out of shadows of trees and bushes. Cole wandered off the road and into a grove of trees, where clumps of lovely, colorful flowers grew. He stooped down and collected a small bouquet whilst Jay crouched down behind a bush and watched gleefully.
I knew it! Jay wanted to shout with laughter. He DOES have a date!
Jay froze when Cole turned in his direction and surveyed the area suspiciously. Jay held his breath and tried to telepathically will Cole to not find him. Nothing to see here. Nobody’s following you, you’re all alone. Don’t look at this bush, look at that cute little bird on that tree. Yup, say hi to the birdie. Hi, birdie! La la la, nothing to see here, move along. I just realized I need to use the bathroom.
Finally Cole looked satisfied that nobody was nearby, and he summoned his elemental dragon. The sudden whoosh and roar of the beast made Jay jump and snap a branch, but thankfully Cole didn’t hear. The latter climbed onto the back of the great, dirt-colored beast, and with a mighty flap of his wings, took to the night sky.
Once the dragon had disappeared into the clouds, Jay jumped from the bush and summoned his own dragon. With a snap and crack of lightning, the dragon appeared before him, and he jumped on with a “Hi-yah!” The beast whipped its tail and gracefully climbed into the sky, hot on Cole’s trail.
At first Jay was afraid that he had lost Cole, but a roar from behind a clump of fluffy clouds told him he was just up ahead, heading toward Ninjago City. He urged his dragon forward and followed his friend, trying to be as quiet as a ninja riding a magical lightning dragon could. Wary of Cole looking back and seeing him, he decided to dive into a cloud for cover. The dragon swooped into the fluffy mass, and Jay was instantly soaked in water and blinded. He sputtered indignantly and swerved away from the clouds, now drenched and shivering from the cold.
Note to self: Clouds are wet.
He followed Cole stealthily, keeping far away enough so he couldn’t hear him, but close enough Jay would know where he went. This was especially tricky, considering it was the middle of the night and partly cloudy. The two dragons, one at a time, swooped just above the towering skyscrapers on Ninjago City, their wings reflecting the light from below.
Cole flew over the city park and dove down gracefully, his dragon folding its wings against the wind. Just when it looked as if he would smash into the trees, his dragon evaporated, and Cole flew through the air and into the thick of the undergrowth, landing lightly and running.
Not a bad trick, Jay thought. He followed Cole and swooped down just above a little clearing. His dragon disappeared, and Jay stumbled to the grass. He tripped and fell, but he thought that it was still a pretty good landing.
Wiping the grass stains and dirt from his uniform, he ducked into the shadows of the trees, trying to quiet. At first he thought he had lost Cole, until he saw a dark hooded figure following the cobblestone trail winding its way through the park. Jay followed him from the shadows of the forest, inspecting his surroundings as he did so. With a smirk he thought to himself. Hmm, romantic setting, lovely flowers. . . You’re really getting into this date stuff, Romeo.
