Season 3: Versus the Ascension
S3 Trivia Part 1
• “Iluminis” takes place six months after “Graduation Day.”
• The big bad of this season is Willa the Wisp, a witch who used to be a member of the Council of Mystics, but was stripped of her membership when she proposed to them her plan to burn Ashlar to the ground. She believes humanity has become over-reliant on technology, and longs for the days when magic was respected. She means to start everything over. (Though what she’d really be doing is paving the way for Master Chen’s imminent invasion. That technology is a very effective repellent against Chen’s armies, and without it, Ashlar’s goose is well and truly cooked. As powerful as Willa is, against Chen, especially Anacondrai Chen, she’d lose. Badly. But she’s not as concerned with the big picture as she should be.) Willa’s daughter, Ruby, voiced her discontentment with this plan, and Willa responded by throwing her in a cell. That’s where she meets Clay, who’s thrown into the cell next to hers, allowing the two to bond a bit before the knights make their escape in "Fool's Errand." Willa’s plans require a very powerful and very destructive spell. To perform this spell, she needs the staffs of the entire Council of Mystics, but none of them are willing to lend theirs for obvious reasons, so she sends Laq (who isn’t a servant so much as a partner) to steal them.

Season 3: Versus the Ascension
S3 Trivia Part 2
• Kilian is, as “Iluminis” describes, a very dangerous criminal. Even more dangerous now that Laq has gifted him powers. Now, these powers are different from all the magic the NEXO Knights have encountered thus far. Why? Most of that magic is drawn from the Forbidding, which is part of the Cursed Realm. Kilian’s powers are Chimaen in origin. As in, they came from Chima. Yes, that Chima. Chima’s tribes are long gone, all the animal tribes having evolved into humans. You won’t find many purebred descendants of specific Chimaen tribes anymore; they all interbred pretty much as soon as it was genetically possible. However, there are a few. And these particular three can summon powers through the Chi-infused totems they inherited. Kilian Wstyklt is descended from the Phoenix tribe, and is pyrokinetic. Markham Scorms is descended from the Scorpion tribe, and has powers similar to those of Toxikita. Nakita Harrar is descended from the Ice Bear tribe, and is cryokinetic. Because their powers are Chimaen in origin, they can burn, melt, or freeze their way through most of Merlok’s magic, including the NEXO Knights’ armor (as they learn in “The Chimaen Legacy”).

Season 3: Versus the Ascension
S3 Trivia Part 3
• There are six sovereign nations in Ashlar: Morcia, Jeaness (ZHAWN-ess), Zarracosza (ZARR-a-KOH-sa), Dulnburgh (DUEL-n-burg), Tovad (TOH-vahd), and Metalonia (meh-TAHL-ohn-ya). ◦ Morcia, as you know, is ruled by King Maximilian Halbert, whom the NEXO Knights are sworn to defend. ◦ Jeaness is ruled by King Revan Levesk, who wants the secrets of Malcolm Fox’s NEXO technology for his own knights, but is too impatient to wait for the slow wheel of foreign politics. ◦ Zarracosza is ruled by King Pizarra Falcone, whose son, Riann, has been romantically involved with Macy for almost a year. King Halbert doesn’t know. ◦ Dulnburgh is ruled by King Ezekiel Cedric II, a distant descendant of Cedric the Bull. ◦ Tovad is ruled by Queen Rhen Tarron. ◦ Metalonia is ruled by Emperor Kristof Vladek, whose chief engineer, Syodor Karloff, took a leave of absence only weeks before the first Dæmonite attack. Something about a Tournament overseas. Months later, Vladek has not yet heard back from Karloff. • Every year, Halbert, Revan, Falcone, Cedric, Tarron, and Vladek meet at the Summit Sovereign to discuss the status of their respective countries, and to discuss how to solve any problems that have arisen. They have a pact going back centuries to help each other out. Master Chen is about to come knocking (more on that later), but the combined might of their armies is enough to hold Chen back for years, more than long enough for his enemies in Ninjago to stop him.
• Castle Knighton is King and Queen Halbert’s house, the Morcian royal palace, in the capital city of Talonjay.

Season 3: Versus the Ascension
S3 Trivia Part 4
• Oh, yeah, Willa has a pet dragon. I hope by this point I’ve established that this takes place in the same world as Ninjago, but this particular dragon is not an elemental dragon or anything like that. This is just a generic dragon, one who can travel to any realm and belongs to none of them. It’s the sort of dragon you’d imagine a knight fighting, except for one thing: it breathes green fire. Kai’s dragon, Flame, breathes regular fire, and the rest of the Elemental Dragons don’t breathe fire at all, but in general, dragon fire is green. Dragon magic is green. That’s why the Green Ninja is green. After Willa is defeated, the dragon, Onyx, sticks around Ruby. He always preferred Ruby.
• This entire season takes place within the 30-month timeskip between the Ninjago episodes “Serpent’s Head” and “Endgame.” At this point, Master Chen has taken over Ninjago, and is preparing his armies to invade the rest of the world. The ninja have escaped Chen’s Island in the Destiny’s Bounty, but have no choice but to lay low. They’re chilling in the Eastern Ocean and trying to make a plan when a Morcian warship mistakes their ship for an enemy’s and opens fire. The knights and the ninja fight for a bit, until Cole and Clay recognize each other and call a truce. The ninja decide (with a bit of prodding from Cole) to help the knights find Behemoth Island, and that’s more or less the plot of “Destiny’s Bounty.” And, since I already know I’ll be asked this, overall, the ninja win. With the seven ninja, Nya, Wu, Garmadon and Misako against the six knights, Jestro, and Ava, Team Ninja uses their superior numbers to their advantage. It’s close, though, and nobody gets hurt much before a truce is called.
• At the end of the season, Riaan assumes the throne of Zarracosza from his father, King Pizarra, who died standing up to Willa.

Season 4: Holt’s Regime
Former High General Augustus Holt has spent the two years since Willa the Wisp’s defeat building influence. Now, as winter approaches, the power-mad High Commander sets his sights on Morcia. The NEXO Knights are divided between High Commander’s vision of unity and King Halbert’s resistance, and this division could very easily be the end of them...
Part 1
I: Conquest (The NEXO Knights are divided between High Commander Augustus Holt's regime and King Halbert. Holt challenges Morcia, driving a greater wedge between Macy and Lance. Clay plots a strike against invading Holt loyalists)
II: Climbing the Ladder (Jestro must fight in an underground registration arena so he and Robin can get a shot at High General Holt. Clay and Macy look on as High Commander Holt officially declares that his regime will spread to Morcia)
III: Deep Cover, Part 1 (As Jestro rises through the ranks, Robin decides to reach out to Clay for assistance; Aaron and Lance save a Zarracoszan town from a surprise avalanche)
IV: Deep Cover, Part 2 (Jestro's surprise run-in with Jamie Holt nearly costs him his cover. General Thomas Radcliffe assumes control of Lance and Aaron's division)
V: Runaway (His cover blown, Jestro fights to escape from the combined wrath of Generals Radcliffe-Holt and Richmond. Lance and Aaron are recalled to help plug the security leak)
VI: The Good Doctor (Aaron's father, Dr. Malcolm Fox, confirms his loyalty to Holt's regime and devotes his company's resources to aiding the cause. Clay tries to get into Fox Industries to scope out what he's now up against)
VII: Kingnapping (Aaron and Lance are assigned to a group of Holt's specialists sent to either abduct or silence King Halbert. Skylor Chen and Jay Walker arrive to even the odds)

Part 2
VIII: Matchmaking (Skylor and Axl track King Halbert and his captors while Jay struggles to convince Clay to make a move on Ruby. After joining Holt's inner circle, Aaron begins to doubt Holt's motives and methods)
IX: The Raid (A plan is forged among Clay's resistance to take back Talonjay. Aaron tries to talk Lance into mutiny)
X: The Forgery (An attempt at sabotage by Lance and Aaron goes awry, and they're caught, putting Lance at odds with his father. With their plan in ruins, Clay's resistance takes refuge in Montgomery)
XI: The Hearing (General Richmond puts Lance and Aaron through conditioning. After an explosive demonstration from Dr. Fox, High Commander Holt turns his sights to Mount Cavora, a mountain on Morcia's coast)
XII: The Execution (After learning that Lance and Aaron betrayed the regime and are to be executed, Clay mounts a rescue mission. General Radcliffe and Dr. Fox begin mining Mount Cavora)
XIII: The Mines of Morcia (The miners in Mount Cavora must navigate through traps, cobwebs, mysterious animal ghosts, and an abandoned temple. In Clay’s custody, Lance and Aaron are willfully interrogated for everything they know about Holt's regime)
XIV: Unleashed (With Chi enhancing their weapons, the soldiers of Holt's regime reinforce their positions. Lance and Aaron lead a group of resistance fighters to steal and reverse-engineer the new weaponry)
XV: Insurgency (With their resistance backing them, the knights, united once more, lead a last-ditch effort against Holt's regime)
XVI: Return of the King (With King Halbert fighting with the resistance, they storm Talonjay to take back their capital)

S4 Trivia Part
• “Conquest” takes place 2 years and 11 months after “Graduation Day.”
• (This is between Seasons 6 and 7 of my Ninjago rewrite.)
• About a month after the end of Season 3, Master Chen attacked Ashlar. Augustus Holt, High General at the time, led the six countries against Chen’s armies and held them back, while also keeping Chen’s focus there long enough for the ninja to take him down. This victory, which was in no small part Holt’s, emboldened him, and he sought to make his control over Ashlar more permanent. Kings Levesk and Cedric were immediately on board, and pooled their resources in Holt’s name. Queen Tarron and Emperor Vladek took some convincing, but eventually conceded. Riaan was never convinced. (Macy is largely to thank for that.) He joined solely to save face, while secretly aiding Morcia on the side. King Halbert saw right through his old military strategist’s hogwash and swore a hundred times over that he’d never give up his kingdom. Clay, Axl, Macy and Jestro joined King Halbert in resisting, while Lance and Aaron joined Holt. Robin and Ava stayed out of it for a little while; Holt had given all the NEXO Knights the option to either join him or retire, and Robin chose the latter. Jestro convinced him and Ava to rejoin the fight.
• Skylor knows King Halbert; she tried to assassinate him when he was thirteen…
• Mount Cavora fell to the ground eons ago, and it didn’t take long for the civilizations around it to forget.

Cool and interesting new parts. Glad you like them! My favorite part of this rewrite is what I've done with Jestro. His fascination with magic started out as just a small part of his characterization that I threw in there to make his transition into Monstruix's pawn more seamless, but the more I fleshed that part of him out, the more I realized I could build on it further, until he became the lovable wizard wannabe he is now.

Season 5: The Violet Mage
S5 Trivia
- “The Messenger” takes place 3 years and 2 months after “Graduation Day.”
- The Violet Mage, Carminus Dateraux, is Emilius and Delara’s older brother, and the one who came by far the closest to actually conquering the world before he was beaten.
In addition to the usual magic powers and the necromancy, Carminus can control the mind of anyone he makes direct eye contact with. The trouble is, overuse of this power weakens him and he can’t turn it off, so he has to wear sunglasses. He only takes them off when he sleeps, and when he wants to hypnotize someone.
- Carminus has been behind nearly everything the knights have faced since Monstruix. Laq was working for him the entire time.
Everyone thought that the spell Jestro used to free Monstruix accidentally released the Dæmonites and the Arbœlii. In reality, it was Carminus who lifted the barriers, taking advantage of Monstruix’s distraction. Willa was also working for Carminus; he’d promised her the tech-free world she sought, with the sole condition that he be the one to lead it. He released her from the Forbidding.
- I wanted one of the knights to die this season. When it came time to decide which one, I realized it was a no-brainer. Lance would be the one to sacrifice himself.
It’s the perfect culmination of his character arc; in “Graduation Day,” of the five NEXO Knights at the time, he’d have been the least likely to do that. Since then, he’s been put in real danger, had to claw his way out of progressively tighter spots, had to apologize for how harsh he was on Jestro, and had to self-examine while working for Holt, realizing he was in the wrong and facing his father, who always found him lazy and undignified. His arc ends in an entirely selfless act; holding Carminus back, shorting out the manual controls on his satellite, to ensure the mage lost and his friends would survive. Knowing full well that when the satellite blew up, he’d blow up with it.

I really like that you put both romance and death/loss in this. I think the lack of these things was partly why I didn't get into Nexo Knights like I could have. Also, interesting with the villain being connected to the other villains, makes everything fit together nicely.

I really like that you put both romance and death/loss in this. I think the lack of these things was partly why I didn't get into Nexo Knights like I could have. Also, interesting with the villain being connected to the other villains, makes everything fit together nicely. Thanks! As with most of my fiction, I wanted to put special emphasis on character interactions and dialogue, since that's a surprisingly common weak point among television. Ninjago actually did character interactions surprisingly well, at least in earlier seasons. And trying to write a romantic subplot well has been the ultimate test of my skill. I don't know how people do it.
As for Carminus, the connections with earlier NEXO Knights villains were somewhat new brainchildren of mine, but there's a prospect about him that's significantly older than the NEXO Knights theme itself: he's Emilius and Delara's brother. This was back when Delara was named Diana. Carminus was bald back then, and even I didn't really have an explanation why.
And yeah, with Lance's death, everything's wrapped up in a neat little bow. I had a similar effect planned for Ninjago, with Chen orchestrating a lot of what happened behind the scenes of Seasons 1, 2 and 3 (and not just by virtue of having trained Garmadon), but obviously Ninjago Edition Grande continued after Chen's first defeat. This was significantly more final, and meant to tie directly into what happened to Emilius, Carminus's brother, in Ninjago. Over on that front, I'm actually quite satisfied with the mirror world ending; it brings Lloyd full circle in how he took away OverLloyd's power: with the same weapon Skales used to take his own powers away way back in Season 2...
