He leaned back against the remains of a jeep, just twisted metal vertebrae now, and tipped his head back to take a quick drink from his dented and dusty metal canteen. He wiped his mouth with the tattered sleeve of his sweatshirt and gazed into the gritty, hazy orange and brown horizon. Distant wavery metal shapes outlined a far off town. The man ran a hand through his black hair, it was getting shaggy and hung into his face now. He stood and swung the canteen onto his back and began trekking once more, away from the town and into the vast arid plain before him as dust puffs kicked up around his feet.

Cipher peered out of the window on the top floor of his skyscraper for a moment at the fast approaching dusk then turned back to the table in the middle of the room. The crackling fire nearby lent atmosphere to the otherwise silent room. He ran a few fingers across the edge of the world map. His world. The parchment smoothed out under his fingers in a satisfying manner and he allowed a tiny cold smile. He spread both arms out, spanning the map and leaned on the table, staring thoughtfully at the pieces on the territories. After a long minute he moved a few pieces from the city areas out into much less developed areas. As he reached for another piece the door swung open disturbing the quite and a figure stepped in. It was a male wearing kevlar armor with white-blonde hair standing up in shocks and blue eyes. He touched his fist to his forehead briefly and addressed Cipher. “Have I disturbed you?” Cipher moved to the corner of his desk and leaned on it. “Just doing a little weeding general. What is it?” The newcomer rubbed his neck for a moment, “The Potentials are here. They’re waiting in the lower chambers.” Cipher nodded. “Good, I shall be down presently.” The newcomer exited and Cipher regretfully said farewell to his map, following his general out.
Elliea Tanter gave the counter another swipe with a ratty rag, sighed, and propped her head on her hand. The clock continued steadily marking time as she looked around her apartment. It was far from what she used to have but necessary to blend in with the rest of humanity. Her kind was hunted now. She realized that no matter how clean she kept it the place still looked bad. She tossed the rag into the basket nearby then froze as she heard the lock click on her front door. She couldn’t see down the hall so she slid her hand into the kitchen drawer, withdrew her gun and used the counter as a sight. A shadow loomed in the hall and she took a breath and slowly tightened her finger. A loud click echoed when she compressed the trigger fully and she instantly dropped the clip to check it. Empty. The shadow spoke in a familiar tone as it moved into the light of the bare bulb. “What, you didn’t think that after all these years I would know where you kept your gun?” Elliea dropped her useless weapon, “Damian! Drat it don’t scare me like that! You idiot I thought you were a Keeper!” She huffed as he continued to grin cockily and then grabbed him in a hug. She spoke, muffled, into his jacket. “Dummy, what if I had reloaded it.” He hugged her back then moved her to arms length. “Nah.” She shook her head, “What are you doing here? I thought we agreed to stay small, dissolve the HQs, least amount of contact.” “I got lonely.” She gave him an unimpressed look. “Okay, stuff has been cropping up that doesn’t sit right.” She frowned and lowered her voice, “So your going to disrupt the entire system and dig up a bunch of contacts over a maybe?” He sighed and glanced to the side, “Come on, don’t be like that. You know I trust my gut, it’s never failed me yet. Every time I ignored it I wish I hadn’t.” She remained silent with arms crossed but less upset. Damian smiled, “Dubai?” Elliea rolled her eyes but grinned as well. “Another one of your crazy stupid stunts. We nearly died!” “But we didn’t.” Elliea shook her head and uncrossed her arms, stepped closer and grabbed Damian’s shaggy bangs. “You need a haircut. Better sit down.”
Damian rested his chin on his arms on the small round table and watched as Elliea gathered the raven clippings up from the table and floor. “I have to go find the others. I’m gonna try to get Danny on board.” He left a silence until she turned to look at him, tilting her head. “There are a few I’m not sure will be willing.” He left a silent question hanging in the air. After a moment she nodded and sat next to him. “I can take time off on sick leave. How long?” Damian shrugged, “A week. Maybe two?” Elliea glanced at the calendar then nodded again, “I think I make that work. I’ll call in first thing.” Damian smiled, “I was hoping you’d say that. I’ll be back at 5:00 in the morning.” They hugged goodbye and Elliea went to her room. She stared broodily into the cracked mirror as she took her hair down and whispered. “You fool, what have you gotten into now….” She tilted her head appraisingly and sighed. “You’re right, you couldn’t leave it even if you had wanted to.”
The morning air was just nippy enough to make nose numb as Damian crossed his wrists over the steering wheel, waiting in the near dark. The car door opened and Elliea swung in breathlessly. She tossed her R.E.A.D.I. into the back and started twisting her hair up into a bun. Damian started the car and begun to slowly pull out. “Better leave it down till it dries. Besides it’ll make a better picture when we cross the checkpoint in fifteen minutes. The more your face is covered the better.” She let it back down, “Is that why you wore a bill cap?” He smiled and peered around a corner before turning, “Nah, I thought it accentuated my rugged good looks nicely.” Elliea snorted, “You never get enough of yourself do you.” He laughed quietly. “Better get in character.” She slid down in her seat and slumped against the car door. “Okay?” Damian pulled over, “Perfect, lemme put on the finishing touches.” He tossed a blanket on her shoulders and then moved hair to cover Elliea’s face. “Like a picture. Now don’t do anything awakish and blow your cover. We’ll be golden.” He pulled back onto the road and drove to the checkpoint ahead. Make or break time.
He coasted slowly to a stop in front of the thick steel rods that barred the way. It was a lonely outpost with a single street light making a pool of light. A fellow in a security uniform sauntered to the front door and looked inside with his flashlight through the open window. Damian kept his chin tipped so his bill cap shadowed his face. The security guard spoke in a faintly british accent, “G’day sir. Ye’ve ye papers?” Damian nodded and flipped his sun visor down and began shuffling through papers, “Uh yeah, I got them all around here somewhere…” The man leaned further and looked around the rest of the car’s dim interior. “And the lady?” Damian put on a bashful grin while handing over his papers. “We’re newlyweds.” The security man brightened up and chuckled happily, “Aw blimey!” Damian chuckled as well and ducked his head farther. “Yeah, we’re going to have our honeymoon in Entratias, that’s why we’re crossing.” The guard absently stamped papers while grinning happily, “Ah gov, that’s nice, real nice treat’en ‘er to that. I don’t get many visitors during these dawn shifts and then you lovely folks came through an' made my day.” He handed the papers back and rocked on his heels for a moment still grinning. Damian shuffled the papers away and leaned back out the window. “Thank you very much uh…” He peered at the security man’s name tag, “Robert Wilbourne. It’s been lovely.” The man nodded and the steel rods began lowering into the ground. “My pleasure, you two have a brilliant honeymoon. Best wishes.” They waved they’re goodbyes and Damian carefully drove over the receded posts and began picking up speed on the road. Elliea sat up and brushed her hair out of her face. “Phew, my heart started pounding when he asked for my papers.” Damian ran his fingers through his hair and breathed out, “Yeah me too. I was sure we’d get busted. We're through!” They both whooped as the vehicle rocketed down the highway past Entratias and towards a city called Recluse.

Mmmmm, what're they up to? And I'd like to know what the state of the world is like now. >.> Oh gosh, I'm still hurting from that ending of Book 2. . . xP
